Week 2: Hornets at Cal

I fully expected the Bears to blowout the Hornets, as they are doing and then some right now. But what's the deal with the CB's? Do they have one that can perform the most fundamental of plays, which is to locate and play the ball?

The Hornets defense has actually done a decent job against the run and isn't getting overpowered by Cal's o-line to the degree you might expect. The problem has been the inability to locate the jump ball. All the Bears have done thus far is lob the ball up to their WR's and the Hornets CB's don't have a clue. They don't look back for the ball, and instead just stare at the WR and hope to swipe the ball as it comes down.

Absolute joke.

Having watched the game, and now looking at what our conference opponents have done today, I am guessing that the coaches/media polls were pretty accurate for where we will finish this season. Weber played #1 NDSU very tough, so I think ending up in top 1/3rd of conference is going to be very difficult!

I don't know what's gonna happen this year, but I honestly don't think anyone can make a definite statement of how the Hornets will do this year based on this game. I honestly take nothing from this, either positive or negative. It is what it is. A body bag game for cash against a very superior opponent.

great to get the first and second touchdown over Cal in Sac State history. And almost 3rd TD until the interception. Cal looks like they might be back as a Pac 12 football school to be taken seriously.

On now to the rest of our season with six home games and only 4 away games left.

Lots to learn from and gain from to today's bus ride to Berkeley.

Look forward to the first home game and taking on Weber State. Hope the students and community come out and support the 2014 Hornets!!!

So much to look forward to.

The bus trip was awesome and well worth it for those who attended. Dropped off right at the stadium via a police escort. Plenty of drinks and snacks to get everyone “in gear” for the game. I had a great time on the bus and am grateful that the department organized the buses. A huge thanks goes out to all those who made this possible.

The game could have gone better but no one should be surprised by the result. We got a pay check and I don’t recall any serious injuries. Even with the lopsided score the offense did show signs of life. Everybody just needs to relax as this was by far the toughest opponent on the schedule. More to come in a bit.

On the radio they were eluding to a Safron injury. Looked like his shoulder was braced and he wasn't at his best passing. Anyone else notice?

Totally agree the booster bus is always a lot of fun! Cheryl Boyes does a incredible job organizing and hosting these trips! Too bad there isn't more, how about have one to the Causeway? Maybe have a organized tailgate at the Alumni Center then roll over to the dung pile all fueled up!
The biggest factor in the game that I noticed was the difference in speed. Cal was just a step faster, especially on defense. The Hornets won't see anything like that in the Big Sky. Cal looks greatly improved, I would be surprised if they don't end up in the top half of the Pac12. Hard to know where the Hornets stand after IW and Cal. Things will start to clear up starting Saturday vs Weber. Weber looks improved also after hanging tough with North Dakota State yesterday, that could be a real test.

He did come out for a series in the 1st half, but came back in and did ok. His under thrown INT in the red zone looked like an awkward jump pass where he just didn't get his feet set. He had some inaccurate throws but hard to tell if anything was wrong from my seats.

Rough game, hats of to Cal as they look much improved from a year ago. That early sack fumble that set up Cal’s 2nd TD really set the tone early and the Hornets never recovered. Credit to the Hornets for battling hard, they got on the board at the end of the 1st half and dominated the 3rd quarter to the point where Cal brought back in their starting QB following Safron’s red zone INT. Not many positives on the defensive side of the ball.

My thoughts by position:
Offensive Coaching: (C-) The offense had success with some of the short quick passes and were able to get on the scoreboard. I would have liked to have seen more shots taken down the field. The Hornets were just over matched in every area of this game.

Quarterback: (C) Safron (15/33, 149 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT) came out slinging and an early sack fumble seemed to knock him out of his game. Not a very crisp game as quite a few of the quick short passes was not on their mark. Safron was able to move the ball a little bit and had that monster run. Safron’s only INT was on an underthrown ball that would have been another Broadnax TD mid way through the 3rd quarter. Kniffin (5/8, 35 yds) got some more time and looked capable as he led the way on a decent drive in garbage time.

Running Backs: (C-) Safron’s (9 carries, 60 yds, 1 TD) run inflates the stats here. Robinson (10 carries for 47 yds) did alright as he almost averaged 5 yards a carry even though a lot of the touches came later in the game. Cal’s blitzes seemed to hit home, blocking the blitz needs to improve. The Hornets need to see another running back besides Robinson step up and provide an impact.

Wide Receivers/Tight Ends: (C+) Carter ( 7 recs for 72 yds) led the receivers and Broadnax (2 recs, 18 yds, 1 TD) would have ad 2 TDs if not for an underthrown ball. The receivers had a respectable showing; however there were a few dropped passes. Regardless of an inaccurate pass, if it hits both hands it needs to be caught. The Hornets are still looking for that 3rd receiver to step up.

Offensive Line: (C-) The offensive line wasn’t completely pushed around but as with everyone else they couldn’t get much going. The Hornets didn’t run the ball much but this unit seemed to hold their own. Biggest knock has to be letting Safron take some hits and allow 3 sacks, at least 2 of which resulted in fumbles, 1 of those set up and early Cal TD.

Defensive Coaching: (F) The Hornet defense was completely outmatched against the Cal offense and there didn’t appear to be a game plan to try and compensate for the talent discrepancy. The Hornets couldn’t stop anything. Awful game all around for this defense.

Defensive Line: (F) The defensive line was pushed around and was otherwise ineffective. The Hornets missed on a couple of sack opportunities and the consecutive game sack streak ends at 31.

Linebackers: (D) Sankey (15 tak, 1 TFL, 2 FF) showed to be the only player on the entire defense to play up to Cal’s level. Still waiting on another Hornet linebacker to make plays.

Secondary: (F) Just as we all feared, the Hornet secondary looked absolutely clueless as they were repeatedly shredded by the Bears passing attack. The CBs just aren’t playing the ball and look to do nothing more than chase the receivers. Couple the poor coverage with poor tackling and this could be a long season if things don’t improve. Kendall had 11 tackles and there were a few missed chances at garbage time INTs.

Special Teams: (C) Punt coverage gave up 10 yards a return. Cal’s lone kick return went for almost 30 yards. Bright spots were a recovered punt inside the red zone, a near onside kick recovery (negated by penalty, but otherwise executed flawlessly) and 33% of the punts being downed inside the 20.

Overall: (D+) The Hornets were overmatched in all facets of the game. The offense did move the ball at times so that is encouraging. Special teams held their own.

Game Ball
Offense: None…Safron would have got it if he doesn’t under throw that TD pass.
Defense: None
Special Teams: Heath

Go Hornets!!!

I don't think they took him out after he was blindsided and fumbled in the first quarter. Kniffin played a series about mid 3rd quarter. Sarfon was on the sideline stretching by himself without the trainers, didn't appear to be any thing serious. He came back in the next series and looked OK until Kniffin came in late in fourth to finish up. By the way I thought Kniffin looked good and composed especially for a freshman. He made good decisions and threw some nice passes, he might develop into a very good QB!

I heard from a pretty good source (you all know Mr. Anonymous) that as of Thursday they were going to hold him out. I don't know what happened to change that but that is what I was referring to on Friday evening when I said he was out for Cal. It must not have been as serious as they initially thought.

There is a clear right arm (hand? Shoulder?) injury for Safron. He's gutsy, but I hope he heals ASAP!

After watching the game I thought there were some good things but the offense to me seem like they were in there heels all day. Safron looked like he was throwing off balance all day but really for no reason. A lot of bad screen throws that if were on time and good would have been more yards. I think he needs to clean up his mechanics. I thought our run game would be a lot better. Having an ex NFL coach and all.

Defense struggled all day. Corners were not able to cover the fade ball fr the bigger WR. Going to need to work on that.

Not sure how you make Heath the ST MVP. Bad hang time all day. Last couple were good. Had some 35 yard line drives. Not going to be good for any coverage team.

A third of his punts were downed inside the 20 and no shanks. That was good enough for me.

You can see the shoulder brace that Safron wore yesterday... Not a good sign two games in...
Agreed. Given the outcome doesn't seem like playing him was worthwhile. Of course if the trainers think it's not a serious concern maybe the brace was more precautionary. Given what is on the line (especially for Sears) I would like to think the coaches would be smart about these kinds of decisions.
