Week 3 - South Dakota

Time for a home game. Weber comes into the week ranked 11th and 13th vs a South Dakota team ranked 22nd and 24th. Both teams dropped their first game and won the second.

Hopefully we sort out a few more things on offense and fix a few coverage problems on defense.

I hope that our guys don't come home and relax. They have a lot of improving to do on both sides of the ball. The O cleaned up a little bit last week, but is still not where they need to be. The D needs to figure out how to stop big pass plays and didn't seem to improve much from game 1 to game 2.

I'm hoping that the playbook gets opened all the way for this game. I don't think we passed on first down more than once or twice. I don't remember any trickeration. :coffee:

I hate picking against my Cats, I really do. But I do not have a good feeling about this game. South Dakota seems much farther along already this year than we do on both sides of the ball. I think our defense is fine, but they need help from the offense. The offense doesn't necessarily need to score touchdowns on every drive but they need to start sustaining drives. Weber was 3-11 on third down. That is not good at all. Our defense was on the field all day long.

I have a feeling South Dakota is going to come into the game blitz happy and come after our young QB's who both seemed to panic when under pressured. The plus side though, neither QB has thrown a pick this season.

Whether Weber wins or not is going to come down to our offense. Move the ball, sustain drives and get point on the board early and often. This is a tough game this weekend. And at least right now (as much as it pains me to say it) I'm just not sure Weber has the horses to keep up with the Yotes.

Good morning Cat fans. Coyote fan here to check in before what now looms as a big game for both teams.

To start, I am a huge fan of your head coach. Seems like a great guy, and your AD is top drawer in my book. I got to meet them both 2 years ago when we had the fund raiser for Sarah Hill, and they just came across as awesome people.

Now to the game. I have said since the finish of last season to circle this date on the calendar as it is a matchup of two pretty good teams. I think this game will give both fan bases a pretty good idea where their respective teams are heading for the rest of the year. If USD comes out and is fortunate enough to get a W, then I think we have a great chance to finish fairly high in the Missouri Valley, and have a shot at the playoffs. If we come out and lay an egg, then that will present some big questions on our ability to compete within our league. Whoever wins, in my opinion, is going to win it in a game that goes the full 60 minutes. I understand you’ve been struggling somewhat offensively but it won’t remain that way the whole year. Our secondary coverage along with our special teams play is in question right now as well.

A little bit about what to expect. Our QB replaces a young man that finished 2nd last year in the FCS player of the year battle. His name is Austin Simmons, and I do believe he came of age last week in a game against Northern Colorado in which we won 43-28, but the game was in doubt till about the last 3 minutes. Could’ve gone either way. Simmons has an aresenal of receivers to throw to. We literally have 6-7 guys that are big play threats. Our running game is once again a little bit of an Achilles heal. If our line can start to gel, and open up some holes, we have a couple of running backs that are decent but not great. They can provide maybe enough of a punch to then open up the air attack. Our O line up to this point has given Simmons time to throw, and when the pocket collapsed the few times it did, he showed the ability to scramble and gain positive yards.

Our defense is a work in process. Our front 4 are pretty good. Our linebackers are improving, and our secondary is suspect. We lost 3 players in the secondary last year due to disciplinary action and they were not allowed back on the team, so experience and depth are a question. All that being said, it looks like to me if you exploit our D, you have a great shot at winning the game. If our D has a much improved game against you, then we have a great shot at winning.

In closing, the one thing that always bothers me about our team is playing outside. We play in a Dome, and we aren’t used to all the challenges playing outside presents. If there’s wind, that’s an issue we don’t deal woth a lot. If it’s a nice day, and wind is at a minimum, then I throw those concerns out the window. I’m hoping it doesn’t come down to special teams, I don’t like our odds in that situation.

Two last things ( sorry for the long post ). First, how is Sarah Hill doing? I know she was fighting a big battle but we haven’t heard much in a long time. The people of SD had her in our prayers for 2 years now. Secondly, it’s a 6 pm game, and I’m coming out for the game along with my wife. What would you recommend we do on Saturday that’s fun and gives us a glimpse at life in Ogden? Any recommendations on a place to eat with about 20 boosters on Friday night? And lastly, is there an active tailgate scenario at WSU that we could participate in and get to know some fans.

I love college football and meeting the fans of other schools. It’s gonna be a great game. I’ll check in periodically for answers to my questions and see if anyone has questions about the Coyotes. Thx

Last things first, Friday night you want to either eat early or eat after 7 pm. Ogden has a few good options for food.

Last I heard Sara Hill was in remission and doing well.

Thanks for the post.

Forecast is for a beautiful evening in Ogden on Saturday. Should be in the 80's and 70's for most of the game with no precip, little wind, and some clouds. Will get a little cool by the end of the game. Hoping for that normal beautiful sunset we usually get to view from the stadium. Best views in all of college football is what I always say.

If it comes down to special teams I like Weber's chances. We are very solid there.

Now the football stuff. Weather for the game should be nice. I don't expect wind or rain

This will be a tough game. Weber lost a few very good players on offense and defense and changed our offensive scheme. We have struggled on offense thus far. If Weber can run the ball like last week and find some more success in the passing game, I like our chances. If the defense is on the field too much of the game, we are probably going to lose.

On defense, we are pretty stout up front and have a very good LB crew. Pass coverage has been a problem. We need to pressure the QB to help the secondary. If South Dakota cannot run the ball and we can put pressure on the QB, we have a good chance of winning. I suspect the team that wins the turnover battle wins the game.

There is some tailgating in the north parking lot. It is pretty low key and not many tailgate. We are breaking ground on a new stadium project that day and they are hoping to break a record for most people to participate in a groundbreaking ceremony. I doubt that will bring out the fans any more than usual.

Not sure what to expect for attendance. We had great crowds towards the end of last year, but we are competing with several other sporting events that night. Utah is hosting Washington, BYU is on the road against Wisconsin, Utah State also has a home game that day. RSL soccer is also playing against MUFC.

See you at the game.

Definitely try to head up to Snowbasin on Saturday before the game and take the gondola up to the top of the mountain. The Hill Aerospace Museum is another popular activity in the area and admission is free. For dinner and drinks, Historic 25th St is popular for local cuisine. There is some tailgating in the parking lot north of the stadium and Weber has a fanfest starting at 4 in the same lot.

yoteforever, welcome to our board!! It is always fun chatting football with fans from opposing schools. Like other posters on here have said, Sarah Hill is doing well and her cancer is in remission. Huge blessing for her and the Hill family. I'm sure Coach appreciates all of your prayers and concerns, as a member of the Wildcat Community, I sure do.

Where to eat and what to do? There has already been some great advice given by other posters. I love Roosters on Historic 25th St., I'm a huge fan of the Oaks up Ogden Canyon (nice place to catch breakfast Saturday morning, they do stop breakfast at 11 though. So get there early.). Did you say you needed a place for 20+ boosters? Other breakfast places; Jeremiah's and Rosa's for breakfast are both delicious. As for other restaurants, Prairie Schooner or Timbermine are fun with their unique ambiance (you eat in covered wagon or mine shaft), Maddox (about 25 mins North) has some of the best rolls and steak in Utah, the Union Grill on 24th has good food as well. To be honest, there are a lot of really great restaurants on 25th it is hard to pick just one. :) In Ogden Valley, the Huntsville Marathon will be going on. So, you might want to avoid that area Saturday morning. If you like to hike there are hundreds of miles of trails, Antelope Island is a neat chance for someone from out of state to see the Great Salt Lake up close (warning: it is stinky). You could go do some social axe throwing too if you wanted to. Lastly, I love the Union Station, sweet old museum.

As for the game, my issue with the Wildcats is offensive consistency. The QB play has been a huge ? so far this season. The OL has the potential to be scary good. I think a radical change in offensive philosophy's has caused some issues for them. Yet, last week we had almost 200 yards rushing on 39 attempts. A solid 4.9 average. The throw game is the biggest issue to me.

Defensively I think they are solid; especially up front. Yes, the secondary has been somewhat inconsistent but they have the talent and experience to be really good. Against Utah they were on the field waaaaay too much. Other than some missed assignments against TE's, Weber did a decent job against Utah. And Cal Poly's triple option offense has the tendency to throw off a secondary, which happened a bit on Saturday.

Been looking at highlights of the South Dakota v. Northern Colorado game.

Some observations.

Coyotes passing attack uses the bubble screen. Many of these broke for long gains. We need to make good tackles in the open field. They did have a few nice long passes as well. They don't seem to have a consistent run game.

Their run defense looks very suspect between the tackles. Something Weber could exploit. Also their secondary looked lost at times and allowed receivers behind them.

Jenks and Constantine listed as OR on the depth chart

Where are the weekly 2-deep lineups available to view?

https://weberstatesports.com/documents/2018/9/11//Game_3_South_Dakota.pdf

QB position is listed as an OR
Josh Davis still listed as RB1 so presumably Treshawn Garrett is still out.
Devon Cooley is now starting at the WR(z) position ahead of Isiah Jackson
Junior Latu is now the starter at TE
DT went from 2 positions with an OR to one with Sitake starting at the other one.

Does anyone have any insight to why Denby is not playing?

Why did Kris Jackson not get carries last game but Moss did? Is he really number 2 on the depth chart?

What is the return timeline for Kevin Smith? Is he done for the season?

Also, I believe that we need to roll with Constantine. It seemed that the offense was more comfortable with him in there. Jenks has potential, but it seems the game is going 1000 mph for him. Will we at least try a deep ball this game past 25 yards?

Like you I'm interested in why Denby isn't playing. He is a three year starter with experience against DI opponents. Maybe after his injury plagued 2017 he's lost some of his mojo, or he hasn't fully recovered from his injuries? He's another speed guy with deep threat ability. He's had some amazing plays in his career and it just seems really weird why he isn't playing.

Since Coach Hill has come to Weber, I've decided that the depth chart isn't ever accurate. Nothing against that, it is his prerogative after all. Keeps teams guessing or shocked when he changes his system a bit one week to the next. Like last week, Conner Mortensen started at FS and virtually played the entire game against the Stangs. He's a LB with great speed. Someone who can blow up the triple option, but did we see him on the depth chart? Maybe it is Hill's way of limiting the opposition. So, with that being said, maybe Jackson is also injured or Moss, right now, is just a better back.

I'm under the impression that Smithis out for the season. During spring ball he was on crutches and was walking extremely tenuously on his healing leg all August. If he isn't 100%, why play him and waste eligibility? But, I have no idea if he is out all season. I'm assuming yes.

Agreed about Constantine. I think Jenks will be a good QB for the Cats in the future. Just he doesn't seem ready. Nevertheless, like Smith, Constantine had a major surgery after last Fall, and isn't quite 100%. If he gets hit wrong or hard, he could be done. If Ricedorff isn't ready or Jenks is playing better, and you don't want Constantine to get hurt, then ready or not, Jenks is the guy.
