Week 5: Sac State at Idaho State

There is no way we will ever go back to D2, NAIA football etc. I believe that only Humboldt State and maybe Azusa Pacific (?) are the only D2 football schools left in California.
The NCAA will not allow a school to play at a lower level in football and still maintain D1 in other sports, that would kill many of our other solid D1 programs, not happening.. A more realistic ( but certainly not desirable) scenario would be for the new President to pull the plug on the football program, cut the number of sports and focus on the programs that we have traditionally done well in. Be careful what you wish for!
No, not this time. Unlike in past years, there is no time to wait it out until the season is over. With what returned on the roster and the weak schedule this was the epitome of “now or never”. A loss against MSU means the Hornets will at best have an outside shot at a playoff berth if and only if they run the table; and we all know that ain’t happening. Macriss will need to make moves (i.e. begin a coaching search) prior to the end of the season if he wants anyone to take him seriously as a permanent AD candidate.

And going D2 isn’t happening; the program will just fold instead. It would take a number of 1-2 win seasons in a row for it to get to that point…or a very poor HC hire.

As I said at the start of the season, with the talent and schedule I expect this team to win 7-8 games. If it does it would justify retaining Sears as head coach., if not let the search begin. I have not stepped back from that, Sears has six games to win four if I’m AD! We lost a game in which we were favored to win by 4 points. We turned over the ball 4 times, had the, best tackler in the BSC, #2 in the nation ejected early in the 1st quarter. We played a inconsistent sloppy game while ISU played well. I think Idaho State is lot better this year than they were expected to be, you will see that as the season plays out. Our offense produced but their efforts were negated by the turnovers. It’s hard for me to believe HH’s post that the defensive problems were due to the DL being too small, fat or slow since they were leading the BSC in rush defense coming into the game. Our defensive problems are the same as they have been for the past several years, the DB’s, they are the ones that got burned Saturday. I don’t know if it’s inexperience or poor coaching or a combination of both but it needs to improve. I thought the DB’s were improving since the Cal game but they seem to have regressed.

One concern, that I have is how will Macriss’ interim status or Gonzalez’s lame duck status affect any change? Might they be a little slow on the trigger? Any AD worth their salt should know who might be available, a good fit, etc. regardless of the interim coach’s record, that’s part of their job.

Go Hornets

Meh, have you seen all 5 games? I have. Don't let the "lead the nation" statistics deceive you. Those stats were primarily against inferior opponents. I have watched more than my fair share of RB's get to 2nd level. I am amazed no one asks the question, why is Sankey the leading tackler? Because the D line is not getting off their blocks. No one wonders why DB's get burned? Against Weber, little pash rush. Against ISU, non existent. We cannot give 6 seconds to any QB and not expect them to find an open man.

I agree with SDH, with the easy schedule, we should not be getting pounded like we did, and we definitely need to start putting feelers out. Everyone on the list of top 5 coaches I would like to hire should get a call.

HH,

Yes as a matter of fact I have seen all 5 games, 3 in person 2 online. I have also watched all of the expected BSC contenders on BSTV. I understand and have said many times that we haven’t played a strong schedule . ISU has a good RB Xaiver Finney and a good QB Justin Arias both are currently ranked 2nd in the BSC at their positions. Arias was named BSC offensive player of the week for his efforts Saturday and by the way ISU HAS played a tough schedule coming into Saturday’s game. Looking at the numbers;

Xavier Finney RB
134 yds vs. Utah
93 yds vs. Utah State
158 yds vs. Chadron
138 yds vs. Sac To me that indicates that we did a decent job vs. a quality back, even without Sankey. and a true freshman playing in his place.

Justin Arias QB
158 yds vs. Utah
307 yds vs. Utah State
318 yds. vs. Chadron State
413 yds vs. Sac State To me that indicates that we have a problem with coverage.

I understand that the early soft schedule may have affected the stats a bit but in the Incarnate Word and Menlo games the starters were taken out in the third quarter so that affected stats the other way.

I will be there Saturday night to see if your previous prediction comes true:

“Sorry GL but the MSU game is not even going to be close. Our DLine is too slow, and either too fat or too small to get any kind of pressure. We had no pressure on an average at best ISU team and they put up 44 on us. We will be lucky if we can keep MSU under 63 pts. Offensively we made limited plays, and did little in the 2nd half to give us Hornet fans any hope. They are already playing like they did against Cal Poly last year. This will be a long season.”

I really don’t think that Montana State can score 63 points on our defense but we shall see what kind of prognosticator you are!

And the average OL you said that we couldn’t get any pressure on? Was called by ISU Coach Mike Kramer the best he has ever had, including on his Montana State teams that won 3 BSC Championships. Coach Sears also said before the game they were the best OL we would face. I guess their opinions mean nothing?

Go Hornets!

Hey hornet hope, you do realize it is most common that a linebacker is the teams leading tackler? That was a pretty dumb comment.

This. A lot of what D-Linemen do serves to enable LBers to make the tackle.

I'd be MUCH more concerned if a member of the ATC was the leading tackler. Yes, one member of the secondary is generally assigned to force the run back inside, but a major indicator that the front seven isn't doing their job is a safety listed as the leading tackler. Unless the line is getting a zillion sacks and TFLs, the average leading tackler is often going to be an LBer.

That said, I'm not so sure that HH's comment was "dumb," per se. He's thinking along the lines I just outlined re the problems a defense would have if the secondary is having to take its focus off covering receivers to clamp down on the run. He just didn't realize that the LB position is essentially a "hybrid" of the responsibilities of the line and the secondary. The LB corps HAS to be able to do both, looking for the run first, so they're naturally going to be there to clean up what the DL leaves. Besides, the LBers are assigned their own holes, so they're part and parcel of the run coverage.

44-24 Loss. The more things change, the more they stay the same. Embarrassing loss that ends any ideas about this being anything other than a at best middle of the road season. Games like these are why this program is at where it is and why no one really cares about Hornet football.

This will get interesting on the administrative side of things now. Assuming the season plays out as we expect (maybe 6 wins tops) then Macriss will have to make some moves on the HC position. If the wheels fall of then he shouldn’t wait until the end of the season to start putting out some feelers for candidates. If for some reason he resigns Sears then I don’t think there is any hope for the future of this program.

Funny, I was thinking Saturday night that if I am Macriss, Monday morning I should be on the phone putting out feelers for a new head coach. This was on Sears, they were not ready, not even close.

Pat Hill and Chris Tormey are available.

It would be good to open up both the AD and Head Football positions ASAP to a national search.
This is a great opportunity for the University to see who might be out there, or if we currently have the best fits in place. No contracts to worry about, no long term commitments this is like a free play! Both Macriss and Sears could apply for their positions. Hopefully the AD position could be filled first and have a impact on the football position.
Maybe we do have the best fit in these positions, maybe there is somebody better out there that could help us.
If this was done now we could probably have a AD by the end of November and a football coach by the end of the year. I have nothing against Macriss or Sears, I just think we should take a look at who else is available and what they may bring to the table. I don't like the concept of a person leaving and the keys being thrown to the next guy without allowing competition for the job. Competition makes everything better!

Pat Hill would be amaze-balls, but he's out of our league.

I dunno. After hearing him the call the SDSU-FS game Friday night on CBS Sports, you can tell he wants to be a HC again. I'm not sure that FBS programs like SMU will look at him. I think he's in Sac St's league. He can bounce back from Sac St. Two-to-three seasons with him as hornet headman can get the motor of this team going.
