Recap/Thoughts
The Hornets traveled to Cedar City and finally win a game in Utah with a 27-22 victory over the Southern Utah Thunderbirds. The Hornets improved to 4-2 (2-1 BSC) on the season and eliminated SUU from playoff contention as they fell to 2-4 (1-2 BSC). The game was close for the entire way and it took a monumental defensive effort in the final minutes of the game to seal this win.
Offense
Statistically the offense didn’t put up a lot of yards and struggled for much of the game. During the first half the running game never got going and Safron was terrible. Safron missed a lot of open receivers with bad throws and he had 2 INT’s (one due to a poor read as he threw into double coverage, the other due to an overthrow on a wide open receiver on a hook route).
The second half was significantly better. Safron took better care of the ball and he made some plays with his feet which resulted in 2 TD’s. Aside from the TD runs by Safron, the running game never really got going. Safron did get it together and put together an impressive drive early in the 4th quarter which ultimately resulted in the game winning TD. In that drive, Safron’s play resembled that of weeks 1 and 2 in which he went a perfect 6 for 6 on passing attempts that were all well thrown balls as well as the right read to the open receiver.
Game Stats:
- • Passing: 192 yds (9.1 ypc), 1 TD
• Rushing: 158 yds (4.2 ypr), 3 TD’s
• Total Offense: 350 yds, 4 TD’s, 0 FG’s
• Time of Possession: 30:10
• Turnovers: 2 (2 INT’s, 0 Fum)
• Penalties: 7 for 35 yds
• (#12) Safron: 21 of 29 for 192 yds, 1 TD, 2 INT’s, 12 carries for 91 yds, 2 TD’s
• (#8) Graham: 15 carries for 48 yds, 3 recs for 27 yds
• (#21) Ellis: 5 carries for 8 yds, 1 TD, 1 rec for 6 yds
• (#13) Norrise: 3 recs for 59 yds, 1 TD
• (#9) De’jon Coleman: 3 carries for 14 yds, 2 recs for 27 yds
• (#17) Knowles: 4 rec for 29 yds
• (#81) Robertson: 4 recs for 23 yds
• (#10) Dotson: 2 recs for 10 yds
• (#15) Harrison: 2 rec for 9 yds

At the end of the day the Hornets got the win and that is all that matters. Safron still needs to show some consistency in the passing game to enable this offense to operate at its highest potential. The good news is we saw a glimmer of his week 1 and 2 type of and his running plays reminded everyone of the dynamic versatility he brings to the offense.
The bad news is there is some suspect play calling from time to time. The draw play on 3rd and 2 late in the game was absolutely horrific and the double TE set got absolutely nothing all game long. The Hornets have maybe one blocking TE in (#47) Maciel and lining Knowles up in a 3 point stance next to an offensive tackle completely eliminates his effectiveness on offense. Knowles is best used when lined up in the slot where his 6’-7” frame can be used to spread out the defense and generate a mismatch in the defensive secondary. The Hornets had too many wasted plays by trying to pound the ball from the double TE set. So far this season the Hornets have been most effective running the ball when the defense is spread out with 3+ WR’s and the defense cannot stack the box with 7+ defenders.
Defense
The defense had its struggles but buckled down when they really needed to. The Hornets had a key stop on the goal line early in the first half that turned out to be the difference in this one. SUU’s Sorensen was able to move the ball but the biggest issue the Hornets had was poor tackling by the secondary that allowed some marginal plays to be turned into big gains. (#3) Washington had a horrendous day trying to tackle anyone and there were a few others as well.
The Hornet defense had a tremendous second half. The Hornets forced multiple 3 and outs and only gave up 6 second half points. The Hornets also had better success getting pressure on Sorensen and kept him flustered throughout the half. Ultimately this defense was relied upon to seal the victory and they came through in a major way. Sorensen had a little over 2 minutes to drive for a game winning TD but the Hornet defense stepped up and forced a turnover to guarantee a Hornet victory.
Game Stats:
- • Passing Allowed: 327 yds (16.4 ypc), 1 TD
• Rushing Allowed: 61 yds (2.0 ypr), 1 TD
• Total Offense Allowed: 388 yds, 2 TD’s, 3 FG
• Opponent Tim of Possession: 29:50
• Turnovers Forced: 1 (1 INT, 0 Fum)
• Opponents Penalties: 4 for 35 yds
• (#11) Badger: 12 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 sack, 1 INT
• (#6) McMahon: 8 tackles
• (#3) Washington: 7 tackles
• (#91) Davis: 6 tackles, 2 TFL
• (#31) Williams: 5 tackles
• (#90) Cowger: 4 tackles, 1 TFL
• (#1) Odiase: 4 tackles, 2 BU’s
• (#62) Lawrence: 3 tackles, 1 TFL, 1 sack
• (#7/#14) Armstrong/ (#94) Eskew/ (#48) Fernandez: 2 tackles
• Everyone else: 1 tackle
The Hornet defense continues to impress but there are still areas for improvement. The tackling of the secondary has been suspect for quite a while now and this unit is really missing (#29) Beale at the FS spot. The Hornets cannot allow small gains to turn into large ones due to poor tackling. The other issue is on the play calling side. A conservative 3 man rush isn’t going to get it done against any of the prolific passing attacks in the BSC. The Hornets have been getting great pressure on the blitz and the coaches need to keep the aggressive play calling up as this defense plays its best when in that aggressive style.
Special Teams
It was a mixed bag for the special teams. The kickoff coverage had a great day, but most of those great plays were negated due to off-sides calls. The punt coverage had a few mishaps that gave up some field position. Also the kicking on the kickoffs was spotty. There were quite a few very short kickoffs that allowed SUU to capitalize on.
Game Stats:
- • (#58) Castaneda: 0/0 FG’s, 3/3 PAT’s, 5 kickoffs for 62.8 ypk avg. 1 TB
• (#45) Weldon: 4 punts for a 48.8 ypp avg., 3 I-20
• (#2) Carter: DNP
• (#24) McCowan: none
• (#9) Coleman: 2 kr’s for 57 yds (28.5 ypr)
• (#13) Norrise: 2 pr’s for 14 yds (7.0 ypr)
• Kick Coverage: Allowed 87 yds on 4 returns (21.8 ypr)
• Punt Coverage: Allowed 42 yds on 4 returns (10.5 ypr)
The special teams has wavered between great and so-so games for a few weeks now. It’s up to the coaching staff to make sure the special teams has a solid performance week in and week out.
Injuries
(#65) Vince Weaver, (#2) DeAndre Carter, and (#29) Robert Beale didn’t play. (#76) Lars Hanson did a solid job of filling in for Weaver. Carter’s absence is being felt but Beale’s absence is probably the most significant loss thus far. I don’t think the Hornets lost anyone at SUU but I am sure a lot of players are starting to feel the wear and tear of the season as they head into week 7.
The Hornets head into Homecoming to face a completely desperate and winless Weber State squad. The Hornets need to continue to build off of their success as the season progresses. As of now, this Hornet program is on the cusp of finally propelling itself to the next level. It is imperative that these coaches keep this team focused and doesn’t let the players get ahead of themselves.
Go Hornets!
