35-49 Hornet loss. Hornets played up to the moment for much of the first half, until a muffed punt gave easy late 1st half points and all the momentum to Montana. The Griz took the opening kick down the field and essentially put the game away early in the 3rd quarter. Hornets needed to play a flawless game to have a shot and just made too many mistakes to pull off the upset.
Offensively, Cardell Williams (25/32, 332 yds, 1 TD, 1 INT, 15 car, 7 yds, 2 TD) made some good decisions through the air. It was noticeable that he took what was available on the check down routes when the routes down the field weren't open. Unfortunately the 6 sacks took a lot of momentum out of the passing game. Ernest Campbell (9 rec, 206 yds, 1 TD) had a big game as 3 others had 4 receptions. The Hornet ground game never got rolling. Credit to the Griz defense for keeping a lid on things. Rodney Hammon Jr (12 car, 54 yds, 2 TD, 4 rec, 14 yds) reached the endzone a few times but couldn't break more than a couple of chunk plays. Damian Henderson II (9 car, 50 yds, 1 rec, 4 yds) was limited as well. Lots of plays called back on penalties, but what else is new.
The Hornet defense was a mess, but that's not a performance that was out of the ordinary for this unit especially considering the playmakers they were up against. First half had critical mistakes that resulted in dumb penalties that kept some Montana drives alive that ended up in points. The Hornets just couldn't come up with enough stops in the 2nd half to keep the Hornets in the game. Anta'Veon McKenzie (7 tak, 0.5 TFL) and Alex Rocha (7 tak, 0.5 TFL) led the defense in tackles and Lamont Johnson-Burrell (3 tak, 0.5 TFL, 1 INT) had a pick late in the game.
Special teams was horrific. A house call from Hammond was called back on a questionable penalty and as mentioned the muffed punt that, IMO, was the game deciding play. The kick off coverage also gave up some big returns that gifted UM with good field position and not being ready for a fake punt marked a remarkably bad overall performance.
Lots of comments on the internets about the refs. I haven't seen any replays so I won't say much other than this has been the norm in these types of games. I'm not too surprised at the disparity in the flags that were thrown against the Hornets, especially considering that the Hornets are one of the most penalized teams in the FCS.
Hornets will need to find some answers as they hit the road for the next two games against very beatable opponents.
