Week 8: Sac State vs Cal Poly

The triple option is coming to town and CP has ripped off 3 of the last 4 and seemingly are on track to make a push for a playoff berth. Should be a tough one, but would be a huge win if the Hornets can pull this out. Hornets no-showed in SLO last year.

The scary thing here is that CP will control the clock and run the ball at will which will keep Safron on the sidelines. I have a hard time seeing a win given the terrible performances by the Hornet defense this season.

What else is new SD? :coffee:

Cal Poly is not dominating opponents - they are just doing good enough to win. I haven't decided on the Big Sky Challenge this week, but I might pick Sac State just because of your offense.

I agree, I watched them vs NAU and and a little bit vs Weber and they struggled with Weber and lost to NAU. They look solid but unspectacular. NAU beat them late with passes, it looked like they were getting good pressure on Weber's QB. I think we will slow, stop their running game. Brown threw some nice passes when he had to but I don't think he could do it on a consistent basis if he was forced to. If it gets to be a shootout I don't see how they can hang with us.

We are talking about the Hornet football team here. Anything can happen anytime by an opponent against this program. Havent seen a Hail Mary in a few years, so that is due. Or a double reverse flea flicker.

We know one thing for sure our defense cannot stop anything...So it comes down to one simple thing we need to score at least 40 pts to have a shot of winning this game or any game.

Both their NAU game and WSU game was on the road at elevation. We barely hung on to beat Weber at home. CP's offense is built to control the ball and run clock which they shouldn't have a problem doing against our defense.

I would like to see a trick play for a 1st down from the punts or place kick. We burned NAU with a fake punt a few years ago that went for 17 yards and a 1st down. Changed the momentum and we won.

I can't find a straight-up example, but I think a resurrection of the Volek Swinging Gate would be nice.

Everything on Youtube I can find CLAIMING to be the Swinging Gate isn't. They're all an off-shoot of it I picked up at UOP called the Duck, where a TE snaps to a quarterback with a couple of backs near him. The "normal" Swinging Gate, as Volek ran it, featured the QB on the ball, snapping across the field to the FB behind a screen.

There was a bogus Duck fail by the Redskins, where the punter threw deep into triple coverage; the CORRECT throw would have been to the kicker in motion behind the screen.

"At elevation" is their excuse for lackluster performances, are you serious? I don't recall you considering elevation in evaluating our performances at Idaho State and Northern Colorado. By the way Poly also barely beat a not very good Southern Utah team in SLO, at sea level. Two other things I noticed is that their tackling appeared sloppy and that they don't appear to have the speed to get to the edge they have always had.
I expect a hard fought, close and entertaining game Saturday, certainly not the blow out that you seem to imply. Of course you predicted we would be blown out by MSU too, didn't you?

Well the elevation excuse is something we have used for years so I figured it could be applied to CP’s road games. I did think we would get blown out by MSU, I over estimated their defense. I never said we would get blown out by CP this weekend…but we were blown out last year in SLO so another blowout loss this year wouldn’t be surprising. I have no confidence in this defense to stop anyone, let alone for the HC/DC to call a good game on top of having this defense prepped for a triple option attack in less than a week.

Our defense is the focus of my concern also however I have more confidence in Sankey and crew to deal with the run than I do the DBs to stop the pass. In the last 10 years we've had 3-4 different DCs and it never seems to change. I don't know what the problem is, they had and currently have some excellent athletes on the defensive side who have done a great job individually but as a unit the package never seems to come together.

I agree with GL on this one. We have done a decent job stopping the run and I do not see Poly abandoning the run for a spread offense just to toast us. They will put points up, but I think we have the offensive fire power to pull out a win.

Big game for the Hornets on Sat. for Homecoming. May we score our average of 41 points and then some. And get some turnovers, and play good on special teams, avoid penalties and successfully make all the field goals and extra point kicks.

DEFENSE.

Go Sac State !!

Looking forward to this game someday being a rivalry game like it is between Cal poly and Davis. Would be great to have a game other then the Causeway Classic that has a trophy and big time fan interest. Hope Cal Poly and Sac State get it together and make this a rivalry game. In the long time past it was the Green /Gold game. Be nice to bring that back. Be nice to create Big Sky rivalries among the top notch CA schools in the BSC. We have Div I schools all around us unlike the Montana schools but no reasons why this can't be a challenge to figure out.

A win here would be huge as the Hornets have a bye next week. The Hornet DL got Castro back last week and he brings another big body to rotate in on the interior. Hornet discipline on defense will be the difference maker in this game as they will need to find a way to stop CP’s triple option. Offensively the Hornets need to just keep on keepin’ on. Hopefully special teams gets it together as well, those units have given up some big plays the last few weeks.

If we win this game, then we can go back and discuss playoffs. MSU is a better team than Cal Poly. With a better kicking game tonight, then we can beat Cal Poly on our home turf.
