WEEK 9 NORTH DAKOTA

The Wildcats have gone 5-0 against 5 teams with losing records. The whole season comes down to one game. If the Wildcats beat 5-0 North Dakota (conference record) then they will be in a tie for first place in the Big Sky Conference and have a great chance of getting an invite to the playoffs for the first time in forever. If the Wildcats lose, they will have absolutely no consideration for the playoffs because they will have not beaten a winning team in the conference this season. So the whole season comes down to how will WSU play against a winning team? How will WSU play with all of the marbles on the table? Next two weeks WSU plays 2 real teams with winning records not doormats with losing records. We get to see how much progress the players and coaches have really made this season. See you at the Dome in Dakota!!!!! :notworthy:

The Battle of the Unbeatens (BSC)! Should be a dandy in Grand Forks. No doubt North Dakota after a touchdown win over ISU in Pokey, and Weber State with a wild 5 game winning streak, should be UP for this Saturday afternoon battle.

Wildcats will need to play as turnover free football as possible this time and likely can't stumble their way to a win on the road. It stays tough arguably from here on out (yes, 'ncaafootball', I know that Idaho State is at the end...with NAU's solid win over Montana, next Wildcat home game looks tough).

Want to see a Wildcat victory, but feeling is this one will go to the favored team, UND 34 - WSU 24.

Agree with the prediction! I haven't seen to many winning teams like WSU that are 5-2 but have been outscored for the combined season in points by 212-203.

Well when you lose 45-6 to one team that'll do it. Against FCS teams we have been out scored by 3

197 -167 Against FCS Schools.

Okay, well, UND. If I was Jay, I would put 8 in the box and make them beat us through the air. Yet, we do have a secondary that is definitely improving. Last weekend ISU put a scare into UND and really made them work for their W. If you take away the running game, UND struggles a bit more to move the ball. They aren't quite two-dimensional. I will say that UND's defense is still just as good as it was last year, but has improved at limiting the pass. Weber will need to pass a lot to stay in this game, which has suddenly become an offensive threat. I'm sure UND will prepare quite a bit for the screen play this week. However, with Moimoi we have pass threat out of the back field that is helping to open up our WRs. Garrett and Pooler should both be that much more healthy this week making us a two headed monster. Teams can't cheat against Weber and pack the box. We can burn them with our pass game. If there is an issue that UND struggles with, it is the passing game. No matter, I think this is going to be an old-fashioned smash-mouth football game. I hope our defense comes out for this one and really makes UND earn every yard. GO CATS!!

If we play like we did in the first half of the MSU game, we win. We have shown glimpses of being a very good team. We haven't played our best game yet this season and yet we are at the top of the league, with a very young team. I like our chances.

Looking forward to the game this weekend! UND has been playing well of late, just as it appears that WSU has. It is no secret what the F'n Hawks are going to try to do this week end. Run. Run. Run. And then run.

We do have two very special RBs in the backfield, but it all starts up front, and quite honestly our offensive line got pushed around mightily last weekend in Pocatello. UND needs to correct that to have success against a solid team like Weber.

Our passing game is efficient, not so much flashy. We don't have any wide receivers that are burners or speed guys, more tall possession type receivers. Our QB won't lead us to the promised land with his arm necessarily, but he is smart and doesn't make many mistakes, and he is good on his feet when he decides to tuck and run.

Our D is pretty solid again, very aggressive and likes to get after the quarterback. We are much improved in the secondary this year compared to the previous two seasons, but that area still is where our defense is most vulnerable. They are causing turnovers this season though, which is a welcome change.

Haven't done much research, what is Weber's scheme like this year? Strengths and weaknesses?

Weber has really been hard on us the last two seasons. Came from 15 down in Ogden last year to spoil our playoff hopes. In 2014 the Wildcats embarrassed us in our stadium.

Should be a fun game. Feel free to stop by SiouxSports.comif you want to talk some football.

13# Wilkes RB was dressed at the SUU game for the first time in five games and has been working out in practice. He has now missed 6 games so I am surprised he would be willing to give up a medical shirt year and come back to play this season.

Please don't let the facts ruin a hot take  :-D

Wow!! Really looking forward to this weeks games! Undefeated Weber is headed back to Dakota to take on undefeated UND. Hoping for a complete game from the Cats. We really struggle to play 4 quarters. Imagine if the Cats could ever put together a full game?

As for Wilkes, players do dress when they are taking a red shirt. Happens all the time. I'm sure there are a handful of guys who are dressing and traveling who are actually red shirting. I do agree with NCAA though, at this point, it would be dumb to play Wilkes. Especially if Garrett and Pooler are ready to go and MoiMoi keeps playing the way he does. Besides, we still have Smith and Thompson available to take snaps. I say save Wilkes eligibility.

The other argument, for Wilkes to play, is that you never know what next year might bring. If he is able and ready to help us over the next four games, why not? Seldom does a running back make it a whole season without some sort of injury. If he can help us win now, play him now. If he is not 100%, then sit him out. :coffee:

So, many may not give the Wildcats much of a chance this weekend (including me, depending on the time of day). However, after looking over all the stats, results, and strengths of each teams, I'm starting to see a silver-lining; the passing game. Weber beat UND last year because they finally decided after almost three quarters, to finally take advantage of UND's biggest weakness, pass defense. Also, they forced UND to beat us by passing. Yes, they have forced a lot of TOs through the air, but lets look at three games where UND struggled.

First: a 17-15 win over MSU in Bozeman. Tyler Bruggman, who is no longer starting for the Bobs, had 3 INTs in that game. Just one less and the Bobs probably pull out the W. How did MSU keep it close? They forced UND to pass. They took away the run.

Second: In a 31-24 win over Cal Poly in Dakota the Sioux forced Dano Graves into passing, something he isn't terrible at and is someone we will also have to face, but it isn't his forte. Multiple times Graves made passes that triple-option offenses don't routine make. Gotta give credit where credit is due. UND did a great job of limiting Cal Poly and forcing them to do something that they don't like to do, pass the ball. However, Cal Poly also recognized that by forcing UND into passing situations it takes them out of their comfort zone and causes hiccups in their offense.

Third: In a 28-21 win over ISU the Bengals packed the box and dared UND to pass the ball. UND still ended up with 206 yards of rushing offense. ISU is not good. The Bengals are inept, but still limited UND's ability to move the ball. whats more, the Bengals were able to put a lot of pressure Studsrud. ISU kept it close by throwing the ball and forcing the Sioux to throw also.

We have four common opponents: USD, MSU, SAC, and SUU. Against USD, the Sioux needed OT to win. MSU should have beaten the Sioux, while MSU didn't have a chance against Weber. Sac...well, neither team really had much of an issue dispatching the lowly Hornets, except the Sioux actually scored points and we didn't. I will say the Sac game came at the perfect time for Weber. After the USD debacle the Cats were trying to find some confidence. Thankfully, we got Sac. No matter, that game wasn't even close. Sac got across the 50 once on offense sans the TO. SUU well, we beat them in Cedar and they beat the T-birds in Dakota. Different monster SUU on the road and at home. Whereas, Weber is a decent road team.

What does this all mean...well, not much, I still feel the Cats have an up-hill battle starring them in the face on Saturday. Beating the Sioux in Dakota is going to take a Herculaneum effort. It can be done, but Weber can't piss down their legs for three quarters and then suddenly decide they want to play for 8 mins. Weber has to play a four quarter game. No dumb mistakes and take care of business in the trenches. This is going to be an old-fashioned football game.

Isn't UND the Fighting Hawks now? Not the Fighting Sioux?

Technically yes, though its still a very divided issue. The name seems to have been adopted will in Football and Basketball, not perfect. Though in Hockey, it'll be a long time before people fully accept the new name.

I personally still call them Sioux since it is what I am familiar with and that is what it was when I went to school their. The Sioux logo was also pretty darn awesome, so its tough to let that one go. I will admit the Hawks logo looks better on the FB helmets than I expected, though I was always partial to the interlocking ND (which we actually had BEFORE Notre Dame). I guess in one sport we can just go with Sioux Hawkey.

It is worth noting that in the past 2 weeks Studsrud has passed for 6 TDs and run for 1. So our passing game has actually really improved since the beginning of the season. Studs will never throw for 400 yards in a game, but he has become the highly efficient QB that UND expected after last season.

For whatever reason UND started the season awful. The loss to SBU (blocked punt for a TD) doesn't look quite as bad with how SBU is playing, but UND's offense looked like they forgot to get on the plane to the game. The loss to FBS Bowling Green doesn't look as good with how bad BGSU has been this year; though I give the coach credit for going for the 2pt conversion and that win at the end of the game rather than XP and tie to go to OT.

Its been all uphill since then. After a terrible first half performance against USD, UND found its stride with a tremendous comeback. Even against MT St, our offense still wasn't clicking. Thank goodness for that D.

Ever since Cal Poly, UND has really started to look back to what was expected from them.

UND will need to limit the big plays this weekend, and I think they will scheme accordingly. Our pass defense is not amazing, but it is better than last season.

Here is my post from Siouxsports and prediction:

So pumped for Saturday! Big time game, and time for UND to take care of business. These are the kinds of situations this program has been waiting to be in. A lot of the stat categories are pretty comparable between these teams. I think UND needs to focus on three things:

1. Establishing the run - Weber St. does not have a great run D, but Idaho St wasn't supposed to either, and they did a pretty nice job, especially in the first half. I have to imagine last weekend, woke up the offensive line a bit. Hopefully Stockwell is feeling better, as it was really nice camera work to get him puking on the field.??? Also, need to be getting all of these RBs plenty of carries. Gordon has, more than, earned his time on the field.

2. Time of Possession - This goes hand in hand with running the ball. The key being we need to sustain drives. I believe it was the first of second drive of the 2nd half against Idaho St, when the (somewhat obnoxious) announcers, made a pretty big deal about UND having a roughly 8 minute drive. That kind of time will be crucial in giving our D a rest. Especially against another passing team, who "could" sustain some drives themselves.

3. Turnover Battle - Pretty clean game last weekend, I don't think either of Keaton's INT's this year have been poor throws, but have been deflected by the receivers. Not worried about him, also the RBs have done a better job of holding onto the ball. I was really surprised we didn't get any takeaways against Idaho St. given their turnover issues, but credit to them, they played a pretty clean game. I expect Weber's passing game and the addition a Reyes back into the lineup to create a few more turnovers this weekend. Would really like to hear Deion Harris's name called after such a hot start early in the season. If Weber is going to mimic Idaho St's 3 step drops and quick passes, I'd like to see our corners jump a few routes .... especially with Reyes back in to cover on the back end.

38 -24 UND!!!

This is a big game. However, it is not a make or break game for either team. A loss for either one of us does not take us out of the playoff picture. A win is good for either of us, but it is also not the end all.

In our case, we need to win at least two and preferably three of our remaining four games. UND will need to win at least one and preferably two of their remaining games. Neither team is in need of running the table. Although, both teams would love to do just that.

I think this will be a close game. Hopefully, UND can get a sellout. Whoever wins or loses, let's both plan on being in the playoffs. :thumb: :thumb:

I would disagree, especially after seeing what happened last year with UND getting snubbed and a 6-5 W. Illinois get in the playoffs. The committee is way to unpredictable. For UND specifically, we need to win this game at home. Then it is on the road to N.Colorado, who is playing well. Then back home, but against a N. Arizona team that had heated up.

The unwritten rule always seemed to be, get to 7 wins. After last year, I want 8 or 9. If we drop this one, then the pressure is on to win the next two.

That being said, I would love to see Weber sneak into the playoff picture as well. Would be fun to see more Sky teams than MVFC for a change. MVFC has some terrific football, but they could use a slice of humble pie.

For playoff consideration, Weber needs to win some games against "good" competition. Getting a win against UND this weekend would really help the Cat's presumed playoff resume. Out of the entire schedule this is the biggest game of the season for the Cats, well, until next week. :) However, even with a loss this week, the road to the playoffs looks possible for the Cats, especially with how our schedule ends up. Two games at home, in November, against a team that plays in a dome and one from Central California and to finish the season on the road against a struggling ISU team. I never overlook ISU. They always want to beat the Cats and would love nothing more to play spoiler to end the season.

On a side note, hope that in future schedules Weber's game against ISU is earlier in the season and that we get to finish the season against SUU. :thumb:
