UGH. Poor play call on 1st and goal from the 5 on the opening possession results in a turnover.

They’re running it down CP’s throat and instead opt to throw a dangerous slant pattern in short space. Very Pete Carroll-ish.

There’s just no need to outsmart yourself there. Keep doing what’s working and safer.

I didn't see it as I don't have Internet access at home, but I DEFINITELY agree that the Rice slant is a VERY bad call on the goalline. Earlier this season, an NFL QB threw a pick into triple coverage on a goalline Rice slant.

I'm either calling I Right 10 Wedge (or Q Dial/Dirt in Volek terms) or I Right 18 G (option right). About the only pass that makes sense to me inside the 5 is a rollout flat pass with a backside corner route tacked on for good measure. There's not enough space to run any other routes. Actually, that rollout is a good call because the LBer is caught in no-man's land: if he stays on the receiver, the QB waltzes right in, but if he attacks the QB, he just dinks it into the receiver's greedy hands....

Spider 2 Y Banana. A Gruden favorite.

I’m still running it 3x in a 1st and goal situation from the 5, especially with the way the Hornets were running it at that point.

But if I’m facing a defense more adept at stopping the run, then I’m going with something to the flat or at least outside the hash marks. A quick hitter over the middle is the furthest thing from my mind.

That what makes Spider 2 Y Banana a great option.

Good win at SLO.

The Good:
- OL continues to impress. Total domination in all phases. Thomson had all day to throw, and running lanes were huge. And they never hold!! (or at least get called for it ;) ).
- DL is solid. Lots of rotations just wore down SLO. We are deep here.
- Run game - glad we got back to it and showed that if you play pass first, you are going to pay.
- Injuries. Looks like we got out of there without any. And Gable is back.

The Bad:
- Passing game. Combination of bad throws, reads, and dropped balls. Need to clean that up for next week.
- And yes, we should have rammed it down their throat on our first drive when it was first and goal.
- Inconsistent kicking. Why do I think this is gonna cost us a game somewhere down the line...

The Ugly:
- The SLO offense. WTF?
- The SLO effort. That looked like a beaten-down team. That can't be fun to be a part of, or to watch.

In terms of predicting attendance for next weekend’s game, would you take take the over or under set at 15,140?

Hate to say it, but I say under. I'm thinking Weber doesn't travel as well as Montana (did you see the visitors side during the Davis game yesterday?), and I think a lot of Hornet alumni only show up once a year (HC). Hope I'm wrong - this team definitely deserve our support.

BHF: Just looked that up. I love the concept. A two-level read to the strongside with a replacement crossing route over the Y line, with a backside fade to boot. I'd like that a bit more with a strongside roll, but perhaps Gruden doesn't think there'd be enough time for that inside the five....

IDK if this is the video you saw or not, but here Gruden explains it to Marcus Mariota during one of his QB camps:

I’m in no way a Raider fan, but I do like the play especially with the spider 2 slide protection.

But in the situation the Hornets were in yesterday, I would have preferred 3 consecutive runs — if they needed that many.

I’m just glad that drive didn’t at all come back to haunt them.

Excellent recap Vintage. And welcome to the board! :thumb:

I agree we got a bump in attendance from homecoming and a montucky fan base that travels well. I'd be surprised if we see 15k again this week, but I'm hoping we can crack 12k.

BHF: I didn't see a video. I found a play diagram.

Well, then I'm glad I posted the video above. I posted a couple more in the game thread re: the spread offense. I can nerd out on this stuff all day long. I'm a former youth and HS coach. But been nerding out since the 70's when I was a little kid watching the NFL and college on TV.;)

BHF: Given the failures of modern offenses at the goal line, I've been considering resurrecting the Notre Dame Box inside the five. The extra blocking power would more than make up for the lack of room for receivers to run routes the closer one gets to the goal line....
