I was thinking earlier yesterday about what a realistic view of our season would be, there are teams we should beat but haven't won at their place in years, teams that have our number, and more...here's my take, I've made my homer prediction, here is my "realistic" look
Sept.1 @McNeese State
Opening day, Viking fans have been waiting for this one for awhile,
Glanville and Mouse making their debut(MD's re-debut). We have had more press then any other FCS team in the country, and now it's time to see what we can do on the field. We play McNeese State, down in extremely hot Lake Charles, Louisiana, not a good day for Jerry to wear black, oh well. This team we play is strong, even though they are coming off an embarrassing loss to Montana in the playoffs they bring alot of their playoff team back. We beat this guys back in 05' in Portland, but this game will be different, I see us having success early but being consumed by the tough climate in the 4th quarter
Portland State 24 McNeese State 27
Sept.8 vsUC Davis
Home opener! Hopefully a large attendance shows up! 10K+? After a loss to McNeese State the Viks will try to take down UC Davis, who also puts a good team on the field next year, Maybe even better then our previous opponent McNeese State, difference? This is our town, the crowd will be loud, the excitement will be felt, and the offense clicks for the first time
UC Davis 21 Portland State 41
Sept.15 vsSacramento State
Sac State....Last year we tormented their offense, but we struggled on Offense as well, this time around the game is here, Sacramento State will be breaking in a few new systems also, along with their new Head Coach. PSU will be coming off their first win and will be hoping to pick up so momentum. The Defense will come up big in this game and the Vikings will prevail
Sacramento State 14 Portland State 45
Sept.22 @San Diego State
Our 1 and only FBS team scheduled in 07' San Diego State, this team isn't like the FBS teams we played last year, California, Oregon, and New Mexico. SDSU is struggling, their fans have told us, you read it in their papers, they aren't at their peak that's for sure, in fact this team was smoked by New Mexico last year, the same UNM that we beat 17-6, but even though true, we will come in the underdog. SDSU has a few weapons at RB, that is what would beat us, SDSU has been consumed by the Run and shoot offense before, they lost to a young Hawaii team 49-38, so Glanville and Mouse, being from Hawaii's football staff, will know what these guys are like. PSU is known for upsets against FBS teams, SDSU has recently struggled with FCS teams(lost to Cal Poly in 06') So when the Viks come out pumped for the game, expect what happend in 06'
Portland State 34 San Diego State 30
Sept.29 @Eastern Washington
PSU continues their road trip, ending in Cheney, Washington, and boy have we struggled here. The last time the Vikings showed up in Cheney EWU had famed soon to be Walter Payton award winner Erik Meyer, and his team stomped on us, the Viks gave up 50+ points, this time we are a better team, EWU is a team coming off their worst season in years, but they have our number in Cheney. I see the Viks coming out flat after a great win against SDSU. EWU will prevail.....until next year.
Portland State 27 Eastern Washington 37
Oct.6 vsNorthern Arizona
After a disappointing loss to EWU the Viks return home to Portland, only to face yet another strong Big Sky team, this time it's Northern Arizona, NAU despite losing Walter Payton award runner-up Josh Murrieta will place a QB just as good, his name is Sean Norton. The former Fresno State QB transfers because of a lack of playing time as a Freshman, Norton is statistically the 25th best QB is ever come out oh High school, throwing 44 TD's his senior year along with 4,000+ passing yards, he also will air an All-BSC WR corps...Will the Viks be able to handle this? No! but our counter act, they cannot stop us either, as they proved last year in Flagstaff. This game will be one big shoot-out, from beginning to end, and the Vikings never lose a shoot out
Northern Arizona 45 Portland State 56
Oct.13 BYE
Easy Win.
Oct.20 @Idaho State
Now to Idaho. The Bengals are yet anther road trip for the Vikings. Like EWU these guys have had our number at their place, they will bring back their all star RB Josh Barnett, who racked up 179 yards of rushing against the Vikings last year. These guys will be good in the running game but struggle in the passing game, and like most teams Mouse's knowledge and the offense will get the best of them. Jerry Glanville and his boys will begin to break the barrier. The streak ends on October 20th
Portland State 49 Idaho state 27
Oct.27 vsWeber State
Well here we go, our first easy game of the year. WSU has more spots to fill then any other team in the conference, expecting success out of them next year is something I can't do, after a great win at Idaho State PSU will let the Wildcats have it, let the fire works begin!
Weber State 7 Portland State 56
Nov.3 @Montana
Now to Missoula. Arguably PSU's only rival in football is Montana. PSU lost to UM in 06' even though Brian White made an excellent debut. Head Coach Jerry Glanville was speaking of this game before he was even hired, Vikings fans have been craving for this game, wanting to end a streak that has gone on forever, wanting to end the shame we have received over the years, and for my fellow members of PSFF, wanting to see what OneBigSkyFan will say when his team falls, but one must think how do the players fell about this game? will they be nervous? ecstatic? confused? Washington Grizzly is one tough place to play. The Vikings will have already have played in front of tougher crowds, but they will be in tougher conditions, the exact opposite of what we played in at Lake Charles(McNeese). The Griz will also feature yet another FCS power football team, Lex Hillard, the star RB will return, the Viks will play through the cold the best they can, but we don't get the Griz this time.
Portland State 21 Montana 30
Nov.10 vsMontana State
After the most heart wrenching loss of 2007 the Vikings return home to a team that we have a soar spot for, Montana State. Last year we lost to MSU 0-14 in a muddy and cold game, Tim Walsh's biggest flaw was exposed again. This time we are more angry then ever, then Vikings will let the fiery come and we won't stop. the defense comes out strong and the offense continues it's awesome success. It's senior night and we play like it
Montana State 13 Portland State 41
Nov.17 @Northern Colorado
The last game of the regular season, Northern Colorado. We smashed UNC in every way possible last year. This game could be believe it or not more cold then the UM game. We will come out and do our thing, UNC will have been consumed once already by this Run and Shoot offense, and we deliver it to them a second time
Portland State 34 Northern Colorado 16
Portland State finishes 8-3 (6-2) and earns a playoff spot, I can't predict who we play cause we could be matched up with someone like...Furman....or someone like Appalachian State, so we could play someone beatable, or not. Either way I see a good first season from Jerry Glanville, Portland State Viking fans go into Basketball season happy.Last edited by on 2007-05-12, 18:52; edited 2 times in total
