What's going on at UNC?

Just saw where there is an investigation going on there and B.J. Hill was fired today.

Here is the link.

That would explain the players who were transferring out. I hope they get their ship righted soon or they could be joining SUU in the cellar.

Thanks oldrunner! I was curious if anybody knew what kind of violations they were talking about. I think you're right, this could be pretty damaging. I saw where the assistants were placed on administrative leave as well, so you can pretty much stick a fork in recruiting for the rest of the signing period.

I hope they don't raid our coaching staff. I would hate to lose any of our top assistants. They really do need to look at upgrading their whole program, including facilities. They need to spend a little money and get it done. They need to spend their money upgrading, not cheating. :wall:

I think the NCAA is attacking the wrong UNC...no matter how bad the cubbies issues are, they don't compare with a university who spent 30+ years helping athletes cheat and pass bogus classes. North Carolina is the epitome of cheating but nothing will happen to them. They won't even get probation, while Weber, who self reports 1 incident gets two years of probation and losses, what was it, 9 scholarships over 3 years? For Shame!! Fair, equal, balanced...NO WAY...not the NCAA

Okay...back to UNCO! What the hell is going on in Greeley. To cheat and still stink, that is embarrassing.

Why in the hell would ANY assistant from WSU go to UNC? Not much of a pay raise, program will be hamstrung by the NCAA for a long time, poor facilities, Its in Greely, etc. etc... Hell the only thing they have going for them is that you can take a hit off the bong legally.
Im not worried about WSU losing any coaches to the cubbies.

At least some fans will get their wish - we're bound to see a Big Sky tournament in the next year or two where not all of the teams are invited.

The Greeley paper said Hill was making $140,000. There will be coaches who want their own program, regardless of the problems it faces. Some RMAC heads will be interested, and there will be some assistants at DI schools who show interest as well.

The rumor on the UNC board is that it's a Level 1 violation, which is the most severe. For the HC to be fired, it must be pretty serious. Hill, who just signed a five year extension in June, showed up to work yesterday having no clue he'd be fired.

Level I: Severe breach of conduct

Violations that seriously undermine or threaten the integrity of the NCAA collegiate model as set forth in the Constitution and bylaws, including any violation that provides or is intended to provide a substantial or extensive recruiting, competitive or other advantage, or a substantial or extensive impermissible benefit.

Tal, just to add to this aside tirade, but I'm fairly close to what happened to University of Hawaii basketball after they self-reported. It was a crime. The NCAA only goes after the poor and helpless. They do not really police those institutions that are clearly and consistently cheating (and they suck at putting together a decent 68 team basketball tourney, witness their witless favoring of a very pedestrian PAC this year).

AMEN!! The NCAA will continue to be a paper-tiger as long as the many more mid-major and low-major schools allow 68 schools (virtual for-profit institutions) to do whatever they wish.

Thank you webergrad02 for the below definition:

But...isn't this the definition of how our friendly sister institution in Salt Lake conducts their recruiting? I swear it is almost word for word of their annual recruiting plan.

The tail is wagging the dog here. The NCAA is scared crapless that the POWER 5 will take their money and go home. I say 'Let them go' and never play them again in any sport. We would be better off without them. After we get rid of them, we should stop watching them or buying anything from one of their sponsors. If everyone acted in concert there could be a big money shift and a more level playing field.

UNC has spent millions on renovating Butler Hancock and other facilities since we've moved up. The school doesn't have a lot of $$$ so it will also take more time. Our athletic department has doubled the amount of corporate sponsorship during the past year and a half since our new a.d. took his job.

Didn't Weber get in trouble with cheating just recently?

Yes. About 13 years ago, or so, there were some players who took an on-line course that turned out to be bogus, and lack of institutional control. Since that time, fulltime staff have been hired to ride herd on compliance and I don't think there have been any majors. I'm sure there have been some minors that have been self reported and corrected. The big consideration is the self reporting, institutional control, and corrective actions taken by the institution. I think that there was something 5 or 6 years ago, in the football program, that related academics in some way. Almost all schools self report some minor infractions and take care of the situation with the NCAA compliance office. Nobody ever hears about it, as it is handled behind the scenes. Where you get into real trouble is when it is major and you try to cover it up. :twocents:

Not a current one, but UNC hired a former one. ;-)

Congrats to Jeff. Good guy and great opportunity. I hope he does well.

kinda an exaggeration by the cubbies SID on his recruitment of Damian Lillard.

Is this a good hire for UNC? Being that he spent a few years in Ogden, can you give any insight into his philosophies? Player development?
