I'm thinking if Downing gets two wins this season he probably gets a new contract but I think we're safe

Honestly that's what I'm kinda afraid of, if we get a couple of more wins, they might keep his ass. We do have some very winnable games coming up to, I think we could beat PSU, if the O plays like they did yesterday and the D brings back their A+ game.

I can't believe some of you are actually rooting against the Bears. Just so someone gets fired. Way to be good fans.

Don't get it twisted. I wasn't rooting against the bears, and I don't think any of us are, we just don't trust the AD.

For all those out there who favor keeping the present staff, what grounds do you have to justify your decision? At what point would you change your mind? What do Downing & Co. have to do this season in your minds to justify their continued employment?

Sure I would like to see Downing turn around the program but, I just don't think its gonna happen, at some point you just have to say 'this isn't the guy' and move on, if for no other reason that to show you are trying to move the program forward. Downing has been stagnant in the only area that matters for going on four years now, he has had his chance and it is time to give it to someone else. The only way to convince me otherwise is for a dramatic turn-around in the 2nd half. If Downing were to say win 4 of the last 6 I would say let him stay another year.

Must win against PSU and ISU.

At least win one between Sac State and South Dakota.

Have a good showing against Weber and Montana.

I think if he does this there might be a slight chance he stays.

Man how low can our standards fall? We are actually talking that maybe Downing should stay if he wins 4 or 5 games. Give me a break. 4 wins seasons cost coaches their jobs at every real football school in the country. Eking out 4 or 5 wins after 4 years in the program will in no way save Downing's job - nor should it. I cannot invision any realistic scenario that Hinrichs can justify keeping Downing at this point. Remember he fired the last coach who won 4 games here (Dalton).

Come on - lets have some pride. Don't try to create incredibly low hurdles where maybe you can justify in your mind that it would be ok to keep the losingest coach in school history around.

It really does seem like the entire situation is a mess. Almost like UNC needs a Spring cleaning from top to bottom.

Look at it this way, Downing has only won 1 game the past three years, and was given a 1 year extension. That's why it makes you wonder all the what ifs, so if he were to win a few more games this seaon who knows what the AD might do.

I agree though there needs to be some spring cleaning, it actually should've happened last year.

If the dean of the science department had results that were similar to Downings, ie: There were really good kids comming through the department but only 10% of them graduated each year, I wonder how long he/she would last?

Good point. Sad, but accurate.

I am kind of torn on the AD bit.

Without Jay, do we have Tad Boyle?
Tad is not here because of Hinrichs, he is here in spite of him. Firing Downing and keeping Hinrichs is a mistake. Both gotta go as a package

Boyle didn't come here in spite of the AD, Jay had to scrape (and is still scraping) to meet Tad's demands (worth it in my opinion). All of the coaching upgrades that have happened have been for the better - except football probably - although you have to take into account the time it takes to change over a roster from DII to DIAA talent.

I don't really think that Downing will be retained unless the team goes on a sizable winning streak, but i do believe that the next coach will benefit greatly from the recruiting that Scott has done.

I like most of what Hinrichs has done. I don't think he's A+ but maybe a B or C. He hasn't emphasized marketing and community-building like I would have seen. But he's brought in some nice coaches and the facilities have improved big time.
