What's the plan?

I'd say back to the drawing board, but I don't know with this team.

There was a thread on Any Given Saturday that asked if your team had ever hit rock bottom. Just when I think we can't go any lower (hence, hitting rock bottom), we do fall further.

From what I told you a few weeks back, Alan, I'm sorry. We're not playing real football either.

I have a plan. Hang on for another year. Keep hope alive. Hire Mark Speckman for a 3 year deal in December and task him with creating a football culture as he closes out his career. Let him then help make the next hire.

Trying to keep positive here and that requires a longer term view...

@faithinviks I think your man was an applicant for the job when either Glanville or Burton was hired, maybe both. He should have been hired then. If he had we would be in a much, much better place than we are now. He would be a great choice if the program is continued. However, the community, the students, the alumni, the administration, and the coaches have driven the life out of a once proud program. Last week, even with the MSU fans drowning us out, we were out drawn by Humboldt State. I expect after Barnum's contract expires, the program will expire with it. The program is an embarrassment. No one cares anymore.

Alan - Despite your best efforts to troll the program, PSU football IS NOT going to "go away", if for no other reason than Title IX considerations. I strongly suggest your look into it. Football dies? Then, so does: Women's soccer, women's golf, women's volleyball, and womens' softball.

As well as conference affiliation (and possibly DI membership).

@DavidKeys, my goodness, there are many d1 and d2 universities that do not have football programs and have the women's programs you cite.

@bigskyconf, San Francisco State, Cal State LA, and Simon Fraser are d2 and still seem to be doing reasonably well. If the Sky kicked us out we would probably end up playing New Mexico State, Seattle U, and CSU Bakersfield in the WAC.

IF Barnum makes some improvement in the next few games he makes it until the end of his contract. If not, he should do the honorable thing and resign. I say this, because the university made a HUGE good faith overture when they gave him a longer contract midway through (or whenever it was) his first year when he was interim coach. He did not deliver as promised. He should forgo the rest of his contract.

There's only one Gary Andersen.

Bakersfield... about to jump to the Big West.

Missouri-Kansas City... has moved their basketball program to their 1,600-seat on-campus arena from a mid-sized municipal arena, and is not releasing their athletic feasibility study to reveal whether they should go D-2 or stick around and try to return to the Summit Conference. It seems like they're not long for the WAC, though to be fair, it's seemed like that for a couple years.

Chicago State... the school (never mind the athletic program) is under threat of closure.

Texas-Rio Grande Valley... say that five times fast. They've got a football feasibility study in progress. If that happens, maybe Southland Conference?

It's also not as if New Mexico State won't jump at their first chance, the limiting factors being that the Mountain West suddenly isn't under threat of losing a school, plus there's Conference USA and the Sun Belt suddenly talking about being more geographically responsible. Of course, talk.

That doesn't mean the WAC isn't an option. There's still Cal Baptist and Seattle and Utah Valley and that crazy wildcard Grand Canyon. If one could but persuade Western Washington, Oregon Tech, and Northwest Nazarene to go D-1 (two of those probably aren't considering), it's an interesting discussion. The WAC simply happens to be far less than stable at this time.

(None of that addresses the wildcard question "what if Alaska-Anchorage wanted to go D-1?" For that matter, how do GNAC schools afford the travel to there and Fairbanks?)

Thing is, I don't trust the Big Sky to keep Portland State on if they drop football. Of course, Portland State football just isn't viable. Let's just say that they couldn't pay me enough to make the decisions that need to be made, which is what happens when you barely have a fan base to generate money.

Football is not going away (IMO). Even PSU administration and their low sports IQ understand what a strong program COULD do for the school and community.

We can't afford and don't need big names to build this program. Find proven winners at a lower level. So my option two; if you don't like Mark Speckman. Look at Chris Casey (current George Fox football coach and brother of national champion winning baseball coach Pat Casey). Took Aloha HS from last place to first. Restarted football at George Fox. His record at Fox:

2014 1-8
2015 4-6
2016 5-4
2017 7-3

He knows how to win, knows how to build a program, has local name recognition and even national with his brother a national champ at OSU.

This is not brain surgery my friends. We hire coaches with no proven ability to win or lead or its their last stop. We need hunger, passion, and proven winning leadership. Heck hire our most famous football alum, Neil Lomax, as a consultant taxed with turning this around.

Think outside the box here. Let's save this thing...

If we are talking about a coaching change, I'll bring up a name that I mentioned before, but maybe now it is time, if we are so desperate. A PSU alum so he knows about the school and what football can do for the university. An Oregon native so he knows the state, the high schools and what kids PSU can bring in. A coach who won at Montana so he knows what it takes to win in the Big Sky and the FCS level.

If we are so desperate, it is time to turn to Robin Pflugrad.

Not saying they shouldn't, but no way will PSU hire Pflugrad.
