Wood: We will be FBS, And We Will Be FBS Very Soon

My attitude exactly.

We've heard the same “in a few weeks” timeline (for further updates) several months ago. Then crickets.

While I’m in no way suggesting that Luke Wood is misleading or lying, it’s just frustrating for all to be strung along. And while it’s not this current administration's history, it has been the history of this University and program.

We all just want to see some action taking place, not more words that may or may not come in a few more weeks.

Rather than create a new thread, I'll just add my thoughts here about today's press conference.

Coach Marion surely does come off as an impressive guy. There wasn't much not to like about what was discussed by the coach, Wood and Orr. It's just a matter of it translating from words to reality. But I did like what I heard.

And so far, the recruiting trail has offered a glimpse as to what might still be to come.

Hard not to be captivated by Coach Marion's story. Came up through the ranks at various places all over the country and it culminated with his first HC gig here. There could be a movie about it...if only there was a Hornet football alum who made movies...

Back to the presser, very unimpressed with Orr's response to the question pertaining to the status of the stadium. At little more detail would have went a long way there.

Dr. Wood definitely does not have a poker face. He wants to say something, anything. But it is not up to him.

There is a history at Sac State, and Sacramento in general of disappointment. I don't want to personally project that on Dr. Wood or Josh Wood who have their own history of getting big things accomplished.

Dr. Wood is excitable, ambitious with a lot of personality. It may turn some people off, but there is no denying that he has the needle moving.

The name of the game for these football programs and conferences is exposure. You have to capture eyeballs. As annoying as it is sometimes, Sac State is showing that they can garner endless attention nationally. Marion being another piece of that. That brings value to a conference. I don't believe we are being strung along as much as Dr. Wood is keeping Sacramento relevant while the bureaucracy occurs behind the scenes. Refuses to let their value slip.

Blue bloods like NDSU and Montana don't have to fight for relevance.

I totally agree. He didn’t really even answer the question, just rambled about nothing.

However, seeing Wood’s response afterward makes me a bit more confident— simply due to his confidence.

He didn’t really say too much either, but at least did elaborate more about what will be going on this season and heading into the next season. Also, his insistence that they will be going FBS soon is at least something.

Sure they do. They are only relevant wrt FCS.

NDST has become a brand due to their decade plus of dominance in FCS, but even they can be easily leapfrogged by Sac State if/when the Hornets are promoted to FBS.

Those schools/programs have a history of winning at the FCS level, but the vast majority of football fans are not like us. They don’t pay attention to FCS, unless they are gamblers. Same applies to national media coverage.

Sac State and even UCD have a potential trump card those programs don’t have. A top 20 media market and the potential to be the preeminent football team in the region.

NDST and Montana represent big fish in small ponds. Luckily Sac State has the potential to become more than that, if things break the right way.

Just go independent, apply for FBS, pay the fees and be done with it. What in the world are you waiting for? Just do it.

Easy for you to ask when nothing is going on in your universe.

Last I checked none of us make decisions on behalf of the university nor will be fronting the fees to not only apply and get admitted, but to get to the position of even qualifying for FBS.

Horrible poker face on Dr. Wood...but I won't believe it until a conference officially announces our inclusion. Lots of indicators pointing in that direction, but until it actually does.....
I don’t believe any rhetoric from Sac State. 3rd party conference announces membership or backhoes and dump trucks moving dirt will be what makes me actually garner trust.

To be fair, other than the stadium news a few months ago, the university admin has not been spreading these rumors or engaging in rhetoric. They’ve only discussed the topic when directly asked, and are even playing coy about it.

Today’s comments from Luke Wood are the only time I recall something definitive being said. And more to your point, the reason they likely haven’t been saying much of anything is because the news will come from whichever conference they end up joining (if any).

I think there is an NCAA rule against it. Liberty made it work but they sued their way into FBS and had the financial backing to fight it out in court.

Hypothetically, we could do the same but good luck trying to get a competitive FBS program going with an indy schedule. I don't think such a play for FBS via the indy route would be wise.

I was hoping to hear at what design stage the stadium is at (60%, 90%, etc) or with a ballpark time frame to see the final design (summer, fall, etc). Orr said "conceptual" designs and if the stadium has actual legs and if in fact there is an aggressive schedule to getting it built, we should be well past the "conceptual" stage of the stadium design.

However, Dr. Wood also said "actual buildout of the stadium the following year" indicates that shovels for the new stadium won't hit the ground until after the '25 season which would indicate that the stadium design could still in the early phases (<30%).

A couple of things could be going on as the timeline doesn't make sense to me:
  1. They (Dr. Wood and Orr) jumped the gun really early with their timeline statements during the initial stadium presser this past fall.
  2. Orr just has no idea what he is talking about and has no idea of stadium design status.
  3. We're over analyzing Orr's non-answer as Kadeezy's March CSU BOT meeting intel indicates the stadium design likely gets rubber stamp approval this spring.
1 - Doesn't make a whole lot of sense as conceptual exhibits were made public
2 - Orr has never built a major athletics facility as an AD, so we should not be surprised he used the wrong terminology wrt the stadium design.
3 - Kadeezy's propensity to stalk Dr. Wood for intel has qualified him to run the CIA under President Mean Tweets.

If we hear nothing from Dr. Wood then the March CSU BOT meeting will tell us what we need to know.

Relevance is fought for every season…every game!!!
