Yahoo: Dr. Hill 4 team tourney at ESA??

"The notion of a four-team event comes at a time when conference realignment has put several of the state of Utah's most historic rivalries in jeopardy. Pac-12-bound Utah has renewed its rivalry with BYU, but it will not play Utah State next winter for the first time since the 1944-45 season and its series with Weber State ends with a matchup in Ogden next December.

Utah backing out of those series represents a shift in scheduling philosophy now that the Utes are part of a power six conference for the first time. They're wary of playing too many home-and-home series against teams from smaller conferences, especially against quality opponents like Utah State and Weber State who represent an RPI hit yet are very capable of defeating the Utes."

"The source suggested Hill may have floated the idea to deflect backlash from canceling long-running series with Utah State and Weber State."

This is what I think of Doc Hill's "shift in scheduling philosophy". :finger:

this isn't going to happen. what would the incentive be for weber and usu and byu? i dont think losing 1 or 2 home in-state games in the same season woudl be worth it? if weber/usu/byu continue to play home and homes are we really gonna stop that for a yr to go do the utes a favor at the delta center? that makes no sense.

we are playing utah every yr in salt lake soon. why would we give up playing usu and byu at home to go play in salt lake which we will do regardless.

if we go back to the home and home in the same season with all the instate then ESA tourney is actaully a great idea! i wouldnt mind playing in this tourney instead of at byu and usu while still playing them both at home.

I would be in favor of this sort of get together if the site was rotated between the four schools and not always played at the fallout shelter. Another consideration is the other 4 year schools in the state. They might be at lower levels, but maybe a 6 team round robin makes more sence. You could play 3 positioning games and then have the top two play for 1 & 2, the next two play for 3 & 4, and the last two play for 5 & 6. All teams would get 4 games. It would be fun.

There is your counter proposal, Dr Hill.

If Hill want to deflect backlash for ending rivalry series with Weber and those cows, then he should just continue the series with both teams, but we all know it will never happen

If Utah doesnt want to come to the Dee, Weber should stop playing the Utes PERIOD

I wouldn't go so far as to say, don't play them. I would say that if they want to play the big time game then pay the big time money. I think they should open their wallet and pay us what Cal is paying us to not have to contract a return game. Someday the NCAA will legislate an end to these teams buying a 20 win season or at least discount home games for thr RPI ratings. :twocents:

Dr. Hill's proposal has no chance. BYU and USU wont go for it. Stew wants USU to be seen as an equal to BYU and Utah; however, Utah doesn't see themselves as being equal to anyone anymore. I'm sure they will continue to play at the Y every other year, but as for the other schools, not going to happen.

Weber will continue to play Utah at the Huntsman Center, but, and I hope this is happening, at a high price. Weber best be getting a lot of $$$ for continuing the series with Utah.

In my opinion, the best thing that could happen, would be if all the other instate schools told the Utes to kiss off until they started playing home and homes again.

As much as it hurts to say it, I'm not at all surprised that Utah won't agree to play in Logan or Ogden every other year. I know the PAC12 hasn't been the best basketball conference as of late, but it's still the PAC12. Let's face it, the WAC and Sky aren't in the same league as the PAC12 in virtually every aspect. But I would still like to see Weber play at Utah every year. It's close and gives the Cats a great chance to beat a PAC12 team on the road. And such wins would really help Weber's rep. Maybe Weber could work a 3 or 4 for 1 series. But I agree, a four team tourney is a bad idea and ain't going to happen. :twocents:

Utah not wanting to come to the Dee for fear of losing to a smaller school, makes the decision to end the rivalry in reality COWARDICE.

If Utah is so much bigger and better, now that they are in a bigger, better conference, then they should not have to worry about playing at a smaller school's home.

I dont want Weber playing Utah anymore unless they come back to the Dee every other year.

reasons to continue playing the mUTEaneers:

-money game
-closest road game we could play, short bus ride
-play pac 12 team

i can live with this but i almost wonder if i would rather not play them anymore...and if it is going to be a money game it should be a real money game, no in-state discount.

although it would be nice if they would return to ogden.

why utah can come to ogden even though they are now too good for us, usu and byu:

-usc will play in logan i have heard soon (not sure if that is true)
-oregon state played in missoula last december and had a nice 71-66 loss
-washington state played in pocatello while being 10th ranked in Dec of 2007
-we have played each other in home and homes every yr since 1973 minus 1993

are there any other schools that have moved up to a "bcs" conference and then stopped traveling to its in-state schools? I dont know if ariz and asu were ever going to flagstaff before joining the pac.

As for Arizona, they have not played NAU at Flagstaff since 1990 and have played 8 times since, all games in Tucson

Most schools from the, so called, power conferences play very few non league road games. It is much easier to have a 20 win season when you have 20 home games. Their league games are quite challenging and they know that they are going to loose some road games there. The pressure is so great to have a 20 win season, they usually schedule a number of sure wins, and pay big $ for it. At that level, coaches who do not, regularly, produce that level of winning, get fired. If Crisco has less than 20 wins his first season, there are a number of Crimson Club members who will be calling for his head. I have already heard grumblings and he hasn’t had a game yet. If, after two years, he still hasn’t produced a 20 win season, the calls for his head will become more forceful and threatening. By the third year Mr. Hill will not be able to justify keeping him around. :twocents:

I wonder if the state legislature can do something about this? Its really anti competitive for them not to play any state schools on the road. They should be required to play in everyone's building at least once every 4 years.

You are spot on Oldrunner!! :thumb:

My only dilemma to continuing to play the mUtes is that when Weber, USU, SUU, or UVU play at the Huntsman Center will the game be officiated fairly? If seems that the Refs who officiate the money games have to make it as hard as possible for the road team to succeed. I really wish the NCAA would take over officiating. It really is becoming a joke. I think Weber got homored a bit at USU last year (Eric Curry was reffing, that was to be expected. Also USU had a senior savy team), but it was nothing like the Utah, Tulsa, or Oregon games. The mUte game was by far the worst officiated game I have ever seen, and Hell we are members of the Big Sky (probably a great reason why the game was so poorly officiated was because Manual Casas was on the floor; that guy...is the unadulterated example of a DUMBA$$). Really, the best thing that could happen for DI basketball is if the NCAA mandated a certain amount of home games for the season.

I was at the Ute game last year, and saw Casas come over and tell Coach Rahe to stop complaining about the lack of calls ( wasn't this the game where the Cats were 36 of 40 from the charity stripe, while the Utes shot 40 of 45?) Threatened to T him up.

Same as at Oregon, I think the refs get stars in their eyes being in a non-Sky game and it changes their view.
