You have got to be F#@^*# Kidding Me!

Ok that is weird. I know that the article I read in the trib said 3 years and the link is no longer active so they changed it. Thank god for that

Despite the record, Downing believes the football program has made progress, pointing to the fact that the Bears lost five games by seven points or less this season compared to only one loss by seven or less last season. In his first season, his team lost by an average of 24.5 points per game in the Bears 10 losses compared to only 12.2 per contest this season.

Downing to a Recruit: "Don't look at our wins and loses, because as you can see son, Every year I have been here, we have gotten better. By the time you are a Junior, we will only be losing by an average of 6.1 points per contest!"

I appreciate the fact that they are trying and even calling the team/AD out. Good luck.

CLASSIC!!!!!!!!

Damn I don't even know what to say. Anyone arguing Downing deserved this extension should really think about that a little more. I have seen no improvement from the staff that was fired three years ago. Isn't that the starting point to measure? Why would we measure Downing on his record of narrowing the loss gap. I really don't understand that argument at all. Aren't you the same guys that applauded Boyle for saying moral losses are for chumps?

I don't buy this recruiting thing either. It is very easy to type that he is a good recruiter, but I have seen zero tangible evidence of this. Please list the impact players he recruited in that are "better" than the ones we had before. I know some high school coaches in town and they say that UNC is the worst at recruiting in the area except maybe for lower level RMAC schools.

Police blotter I will buy that has improved.

I hope I am wrong but this feels like a really bad move by Jay.

Well it's only one year so I wouldn't call it a ringing endorsement. Unfortunatly it just puts up a year behind in moving forward with someone else if he doesn't make it happen next year.

One year deal is better than 3 that is for sure. Can someone explain why it makes sense though? I seem some pretty big problems myself.
1. Recruiting - what big time recruit who can make a difference is going to sign on? If the coach who only got a 1 year extension is pitching me a program that is 3-31 that is an almost impossible sell. Seems like the only kids who are going to sign are those that didn't get offerred anywhere else or they choose UNC over Western State's offer.
2. Next year's team - if they get off to a slow start they could cash it in because they know the coaches will be gone. Looking at the schedule I could see an 0-6 start before we get to ISU which should be a win.
3. What about Scott's contract next year - what is Jay going to do next year. How many wins is it going to take to say this is the right guy? They're not going to be in contention for a conference title so at best they get to the middle of the pack. Is 4 or 5 wins enough to extend him again? I wouldn't think to a long term contract and you can't really leave the guy hanging out there year to year for the reasons cited above.

Personally I think this was a very poor tactical move by Hinrichs. I think he may have just placed the noose around his own neck.

That may be because, other than GW, there's not a lot of local talent on the market right now.

Question: if you knew a top-notch lineman from a 5A has already committed, would that change your view?

Knowing what recruiting was in the past--look at the prospects after the season, then try to put together visits without seeing kids play--we've improved in that area.

Except for one problem: the Trib's deadline for contact from Downing for a post-season wrap story was Friday. No other requests were made through the S.I. Dept., and Downing was out of town recruiting, not contacted directly by the paper, either.

If they won 3 games next year I'd consider that a success honestly. If they won 5 I'm buying everyone on here a drink.

I would need to see a good class with the other teams considered by the signees being low level FBS schools (Wyo, CSU, KSU, Utah State, etc.) and other FCS schools (MSU, UM), etc. I want to see us beating out those types of schools not Western and Adams.

Sure, we'd all love to see us beating out CSU for recruits but it aint going to happen. The unfortunate truth is until we do better than we have we are going to have to take RMAC recruits and make them work.

Exactly! The problem is, we don't have the staff in place to do it. Downing could be the greatest recruiter in the world ( ), but he still has no clue what to do with them once he gets them here. Send his losing ass back to Sterling College, he's more suited for their level of football anyway.

Recruiting is a joke. I know a kid that was recruited heavily last year at the D2 level but decided to give UNC a chance. The coaches had talked to him for months and although he wasn't offered a scholarship was told to walk on. Local kid, many accolades, including 1st team all state awards off and def jr and sr yr. Went to tryouts. Tried out. Was told they weren't looking for anyone at his positions, try again in the spring. Tryout consisted of a few drills and the 40. No pads!! and lasted 1 day. What a joke. Seems like maybe they should be reevaluating how this is run.

We've got RMAC recruits and they don't work. If the recruiting is really improved we should be able to get the kid that CSU didn't offer at the last minute or the kid that is b/w UNC and Montana State. My point being the recruiting has not improved and the coaching has certainly regressed. Pretty bad combo right there.

Troy was just stating the facts (which sometimes get left out of articles). I do wonder why there is not other official word from UNC though (or a follow-up from the Tribune).

Someone has to be. Sure beats other outlets making claims about phone calls being ignored when they didn't make such calls.

Yeah, I'm defending the SID here because I know the full story. Tough.

If you'd like claim that my info is B.S., then I'd invite you to contact the SID's office and discuss it with them. The B.S. was in the claims made in the Trib making the Athletic Department out to be one not returning phone calls.

Especially given that Heather's cell phone number is listed on every release she produces.
