After a pair of tussles with the Southeastern Conference, the Big Sky Conference is going to look downright inviting to the Toledo Rockets of the Mid-American Conference.
Toledo is 0-2 after suffering a 24-6 loss to Florida to open the season and then falling 38-23 to Missouri on Sept. 7. A year ago, UT advanced to its third-straight bowl game, falling to Utah State 41-15 in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho. The Rockets finished 9-4 overall and 6-2 in the Western Division of the MAC.
“It’s a test – it’s a true test,” said Eastern head coach Beau Baldwin. “They are a very quality opponent, and a team that wins eight or nine games every year at the FBS level. When you watch video of them, they can play with any team in the country and they showed that in the first two weeks against Florida and Missouri.
“We are going to have to really be on point on both sides of the ball,” he continued. “Our margin for error is going to be razor thin – especially on the road. There are certain things we did last week that we won’t get away with against Toledo. We know that, and we have to attack it all week in practice.”
Eastern enters 2-0, having upset 25th-ranked Oregon State from the Pac-12 Conference 49-46 on Aug. 31 and then scoring 29 first-quarter points in a 43-14 romp over NCAA Division II Western Oregon on Sept. 7.
Eastern is 2-0 for only the second time since 2001, and the first in Beau Baldwin’s 10 seasons as an Eastern head coach or assistant coach. In fact, the last time EWU was 3-0 came in 2007 when Baldwin was head coach at Central Washington.
“It has been awhile since we have been 2-0 because we always have had such a tough nonconference schedule to start the season,” he said. “The neat thing about the Western Oregon game is that there are a lot of things that we can coach and clean up. At the end of the day, I love finding stuff to clean up especially when the guys find a way to win, and win fairly convincingly. It feels pretty good to be 2-0.”
