#2 EWU at Washington Game Thread

Tough game. I think most of us knew that we didn't match up well with this team. The loss is always so much harder when you come that close. I would venture to say that our coaching staff did brilliantly. Their offense made clutch plays purely by out "athleting" our defense. We won't face an offense like that, that's for sure. Now, I want nothing more than UW to pull off an incredible season to make us look that much better.

Offensive MVP: Vernon Adams. It's always a little cliche to give offensive MVP to the quarterback. However, he played with incredible heart and kept drives alive by sheer force of will. Even through so much cramping, he was the biggest threat in the game. Period.

Defensive MVP: Rashad Wadood. Two plays stand out: When Rashad jumped over a defender for the tackle on a bubble screen and when Rashad chased down a speedy back to prevent the touchdown. He was in the mix and flying around and I am glad we managed to grab such a player in the off season.

This.

We'll be fine in D.

Agree. The D could be better, but they will do what they need to to help us win games. They will likely not face another offense as good or deep until the playoffs, if even then. They won't hold teams to few points, most likely, but if they can get a couple of stops, or turnovers, teams won't be able to keep up with us.

I'm more concerned about ball control. EWU needs to start doing "takeaway Thursdays," not as much to teach the team to strip the ball, but to get our players not to allow the ball to be stripped. How many fumbles is it so far this season?

We won't face an offense as good? UW's offense was not good. Miles literally only threw it down field like 3 times. I get that they are bigger, faster, stronger, more scholarships, better looking and whatever other excuses there are, but or defense lost this game. You score 52 points and lose? Eastern, over the past 8 or more years, has always had a sub par defense compared to the offense. I don't expect the legion of boom out there. But come on, really?

The surprising thing about a game like this is...

Our depth. Eastern has incredible depth. It might be young in spots, but everyone came to play and should only get better with the exposure they are getting in big time games like this. We had key starter's out all over the field and still came within 7 of beating UW. Kind of gives me a warm feeling inside and should scare the crap out of the rest of the Bigsky.

We won't face a team with so much speed and depth. We won't face a team that will simply out athlete our players. We won't be outweighed over 30 pounds in every position. It simply won't happen.

I don't think any other team breaks 40 on us. Unless we play SELA in playoffs.

Christ. Just shoot me.

So, I guess the question for UW fans is this: Is UW's defense really this bad, or is EWU's offense that good? The fact that Hawaii could only score 16 on UW tells me that UW's defense is probably better than the EWU game indicates. EWU's offense is certainly light years ahead of Hawaii's.

IMHO, combination of below average defensive play with an above average offense and a great QB. Our secondary are all young guys mostly playing for the first time, so it was brutal watching them against a QB as accurate as VA was. He was very impressive, just dropping dimes that were great passes.

I agree. I think they are capable of playing a lot better than they did. Our offense would score a bunch on quite a few Pac-12 defenses, IMO.

Second question: Why are all the fans on your site such dicks.? Not even a "good game". Pretty disappointing from fans of the "flagship" University of Washington.

Because UW fans are illetists and ignorant most of the time. especially when it comes to being gratius hosts.

Good highlight from Huskie perspective. BTW, EWU is a cross state rival per the site ;-)

I think HardcoreHusky is kind of their anything-goes, fringe forum. I believe Dawgfan is the more mainstream site. It's kind of like Cougfan vs. Cougzone for WSU. The company line is what's on Cougfan, but the real insight and often opposing view is on Cougzone.

I thought the Huskies were gracious hosts yesterday. They mostly have knowledgable fans and treated us well. I liked how rather than putting Eastern Washington on their in-stadium graphics, they simply referred to us as "Eastern."

I'd hate to think what people will write when we play Oregon in Autzen next year. They are known for having the rudest, crudest, white-trash fan base of any major university.

It's just a joke, the trolling of other teams fans.

In person, the HHB's are some of the best guys to catch a game with and have a beer or seven with; really a box of wine and some cheese. It may be 'fringe' in that it really is a Wild West Saloon of a forum but it's run by Author Derek Johnson and has more connection to Udub than Dawgman and it's media whore groupies.

If you hang out on HardcoreHusky long enough you will realize the "name calling" is just humorous and the forum actually has some extremely knowledgeable football fans (for Half Brains that is).

Most FBS teams pull their starters against FCS competition early in the 2nd half, or they would score significantly more than UW did in many cases. Miles wasn't great, and wasn't as good as VA by a long shot. But their speed was on another level, and they would have run through most of the D's in the Big Sky, and FCS in general. This wasn't the Idaho Vandals. By just the sheer talent and depth differential, they are miles ahead of most FCS offenses. They may not be great compared to the entire FBS, but I was comparing them to the FCS.

And our D did not lose this game. We had two turnovers, neither of which the D had any control over. UW got points on both of those turnovers. If that doesn't happen, I think the outcome is very different.

UW just come off a 9 win season. I don't think we can really say at this point that they really "suck". It wasn't that long ago that we weren't even in the neighborhood of decent FBS teams we've played. Now we are competing. I believe we are going to be a very tough team to beat this year, even with our current D.

I know for a fact that UW returned 9 starters of defense, and were touted as having 3 first rounders on that defense. NT Shelton, LB Hill, and DB Peters. I really do believe the Eastern offense is that good. Big games like this only makes your team better, and both the offense and defense will benefit down the road from this game. GO EAGS!
