"The 5-11, 255-pound Ka'ahanui will be as good as any D-tackle in the state. Portland State has already offered him a scholarship".

Jaycob Shoemaker, a senior linebacker for Casa Roble High School, has verbally committed to play for Portland State, making him the third area prospect to accept a full scholarship offer in recent weeks.

El Dorado tight end Trevor Peterson last month committed to Boise State. On Tuesday, Oak Ridge receiver Brett Thompson gave a commitment to BYU.

Shoemaker, 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, averaged 13.8 tackles last season for the Rams, who were 10-0 in the regular season.

Casa Roble linebacker commits to Portland State

Casa Roble High School linebacker Jaycob Shoemaker has given a verbal commitment to play at Portland State, Rams coach Norm Ryan announced this afternoon.

Shoemaker, 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, went on a recruiting visit to the Big Sky Conference school coached by former NFL coach Jerry Glanville last week.

Shoemaker had 138 tackles last season, averaging 13.8 a game, including a career-best 24 against Foothill. He also had three interceptions in leading a defense that helped steer the Rams to a 10-0 regular season and the Capital Athletic League championship.

Shoemaker is the third area prospect to give a verbal commitment. El Dorado tight end Trevor Peterson last month committed to Boise State. On Tuesday, Oak Ridge receiver Brett Thompson gave a commitment to BYU.

Football players can officially sign on national letter-of-intent day in February. Portland State continues to stockpile linebackers from the Sacramento region.

Last winter, Ryan Rau of Folsom and Colton Russi of Colfax signed letters of intent with the Vikings.

LB Jaycob Shoemaker (Casa Roble, Orangevale) 6-0, 215, Sr.
Was a critical part of the Rams' defense last season as they went 10-1 and won the school's first section title. He was an All-Capital Athletic League choice last season after racking up 138 tackles, three interceptions and a sack. This team captain had a great off-season that included an impressive 92.34 SPARQ Rating at the Oakland Nike Combine.

Jerry sure loves his linebackers from Northern California, here's a video on our first verbal commitment for 2009 that I know of, Jaycob Shoemaker:

PSU FOOTBALL: Coaches hit Texas, California and elsewhere, looking for players
Bye week offers Vikings chance to focus on recruiting what could be another large class

Only one school has stepped forward with an offer but it's a good one in Kaahanui's mind. "I love the Vikings," Kaahanui said. "I grew up watching them and I've been to their camp every year from second grade to eighth grade. I've seen them before Coach (Jerry) Glanville and now with Coach Glanville. He's a great guy."

While Kaahanui definitely likes Portland State and is looking to schedule his official visit to the Park Blocks soon he's keeping his ears open to the other schools who have been in contact. "Weber State has been in strong contact and so has San Diego State," Kaahanui said. "I've lived in Oregon all my life so San Diego State is something different for me and I love their coaching staff. I also like what their school has to offer. And with Weber State, I have family that lives there and a cousin that plays defensive end. I've heard it's a great school and a great place to play."

Sounds like he wants to contribute right away, so that may be an obstacle. However, the Vikings are ahead of everybody as of now.

JUCO defensive tackle Myles Wade, who originally signed with Oregon in 2007 and recommitted to the program for 2009, has dropped his pledge with the Ducks and now favors Oregon State, ESPN's Greg Biggins reports.

Several other programs such as USC, Boise State, California, UCLA, Arizona, LSU, SMU, Hawaii, Colorado, UCLA and Portland State are also showing interest in Wade.

A post on o-live said Wade was at the Montana game. If the Viks were to land him, and that's a big if now with all the high profile competition, it would be Glanville's biggest recruit ever, and possibly the biggest in PSU's history. A little day dreaming, but a defensive line with Wade and Sommer is almost too good to believe. Crossing my fingers on this one.

You beat me to it on posting this. ;-)

Not sure on the whole story, but I found this quote interesting.

"I love this game and when I finally get back on that field, and I will, it's going to be so special to me. My granny never did see me play college ball and because of my moms' illness, she may never see me play either. I have some making up to do. Wherever I am playing next year I promise you I am going to take advantage of every down."

Something tells me that Wade would really stand out at nose in the 3-4. I hope he elects to become a Viking.

Canzano interviews Portland State Head football coach Jerry Glanville, and in the interview, JG mentions PSU received two verbal commitments after the Montana game. One from California and one from Texas, he couldn't be more specific, of course. I haven't seen anything on the internet, but I'll keep searching. To listen to the interview go to this site:

According to the Portland Tribune, "One of the players PSU is recruiting heavily is Culver High star Nevin Lewis, 6-2, who led the Bulldogs to the Class 2A championship last year and has them in Saturday’s semifinals." Here's a link to a video from a Cental Oregon tv channel about Nevin Lewis:

Football Program Looks Ahead To Recruiting Season

A recruiting class primarily from Texas should bring in better athletes, but it will be interesting to see how they factor in to the starting lineups. Because a lot of the guys didn't redshirt this year, and likely most won't next year, I hope local guys don't get screwed out of opportunities.

It is Very doubtful that we will sign this player, especially considering who else has offered him scholarships, why would he turn down Boise State and a chance to play in a BCS bowl to play at PSU even if we had a remote chance of making the play-offs in the four years he would be here.

Besides, given the FACT that Jerry Glanville refuses to make home visits to recruits, which cost us several opportunities last year, and with the resignation by Mouse Davis, leaving a huge question as to where the offense will be next year, we will be lucky to sign anyone other than JC transfers.

The fact that Montana State was able to sign as a transfer Elvis Akpla, from UO, is a big statement to our program, that a local High School star (Lincoln) from a State Championship team, who steps down from a Division IA program, would rather play for a Montana school than at PSU, in front of his old home croud, friends and family. You have to wonder how hard or if even at all, Jerry went after him. I live in Montana and heard about this posibility for MSU weeks ago.

Sign of changes to the offense? PSU is recruiting dual-threat quarterbacks.
