2009 Recruiting Thread

Sign of changes to the offense? PSU is recruiting dual-threat quarterbacks.

Any way you could post the content of that? I don't have a membership. :-(

I don't want them to think I'm giving out their pay-content so...

Here's a synopsis of why I posted it and think it's relevant. It's a story about Jordan Poyer from Astoria. PSU offered him to play QB. He's obviously got skills-- rushed for 212 yards, five touchdowns, threw for another 345 yards and two touchdowns in his team's semifinal victory. However, he's listed at 6 feet, and only being recruited to play quarterback by PSU and Idaho, while the others would likely play him at corner. If PSU has shifted its emphasis on QB recruits from pocket passers like Lomax and Hagan to dual threats like Poyer, it may be a sign that PSU is looking at the QB option spread.

Yes, please post content! I think we need to go to a spread option. Start with Connor Kavanaugh.

So, who are guys PSU appears to have a shot at (with offers)?

Quarterback:
Jordan Poyer - Astoria (OR)

Wide Receiver:
Spencer Hagan - Sacramento (CA)
Steve Hagy - Westlake Village (CA)
Adam Watson - Spring (TX)

O-Line:
Mitch Gaulke - West Linn (OR)

D-Line
Colton Paulhus - Granite Bay (CA)

Linebacker:
George Bamfo - Rockwall (TX)

Defensive Back:
Xavier Ramos - Ventura (CA)

Athlete:
Mike Hicks - China Spring (TX)
Tym Pearson - Springfield (OR)

Man, If we were to somehow able to pick up Hagan. It was really lame not being able to have a fade pass be any sort of an option in our goal line offense this season.

I hope Jerry has coaches scouting the playoffs here in Texas. Our local highschool, Kerrville-Tivy has won our Regional 4-A quarterfinals. With any luck they have two games left, the semis and the 4-A State Championship. With so many great kids playing football here in Texas many get overlooked by Texas colleges and never get recruited. Hopfully some will end up at PSU.

Awesome. It'll be interesting to see how many Texan kids Jerry can snag. He has the connections having been the Oilers' head coach.

MSU must have really scared Jerry last year when we landed 8 texas recruits. I know he made a point of it in the previous offseason.

PSU should make a lot of noise next year in conference play

I hope so, but even if PSU improves, so many other Big Sky teams will be better as well.

Looks like PSU received a couple more verbal commitments today:

Donte Almond DB 6-2 205 - 5.6 Los Altos, CA
Michael Almond DB 6-2 195 4.45 - Los Altos, CA

Both are JC transfers from Foothill College, I'll try to get more info on them.

#2 Michael Almond and #4 Donte Almond

Not the highest quality video I've ever seen. Both Almond's look like "hard hitters."

Wow. A three star recruit. Not that I put a lot of faith on the star rating, but this is the first three star guy I can recall us picking up.

Brothers?

3 stars could be now, or their rating out of high school. Either way, the rating is encouraging, especially with a Houston offer. Looks like Michael used to play at Eastern Michigan.

They also got a verbal commitment from Nevin Lewis of Culver Oregon for WR (6-1, 195, 4.5-40). Said he would rather be a WR at PSU than DB at WSU.

WSU as Weber State University or as Washington State University?

Defensive Player of the Year: Jaycob Shoemaker, Casa Roble

http://www.sacbee.com/sports/story/1498198.html

No one set the foundation for Casa Roble High School's historic football season better than linebacker Jaycob Shoemaker.

As the team's intense captain, the 6-foot, 220-pound senior was front and center in leading the Rams through a summer of team camps, passing leagues and gut-wrenching morning workouts with conditioning coach Billy White.

"I know at first the guys dreaded the workouts," Shoemaker said last August. "They were tough. But we know it will make us stronger physically and mentally, especially in the fourth quarter. It's what you have to do to be a section champion."

The comments by The Bee's Defensive Player of the Year proved prophetic. He and his teammates' batteries never ran down in winning the school's first section football championship and finishing 13-0.

It was only appropriate Shoemaker capped the Rams' remarkable season with his goal-line, overtime interception to preserve the Rams' 27-21 win over Inderkum in the Division III final.

Shoemaker's remarkable fall included 169 tackles, eight fumble recoveries, three sacks and two interceptions. He also scored three touchdowns as a short-yardage runner.

"The thing about Shoemaker is he can do so many things," said Jim Dimino, the former coach and current high school football television analyst. "He's not just a tough inside linebacker. He's a big-time playmaker. His motor runs all the time."

Shoemaker considers it a privilege to be able to play football.

"I just try to use my God-given talent," said Shoemaker, who also was the Capital Athletic League's Defensive Player of the Year. "I see a lot of players with talent who just throw it away because they aren't willing to work hard."
