2010-2011 Recruiting Thread

I know it's early, but does anyone with any insider information know how this year's recruiting class is shaping up? It'll be interesting to see how the national media attention the red turf has garnered, the win over Montana, etc. will effect recruiting this year. One has to think that another potential play-off appearance combined with the above factors will help.

A few offers have been made, but unfortunately, the bulk of the recruiting occurs in December and even January. Many many UW/WSU/OU/OSU wannabies, but only a handfull are offered. After that, many of the kids with D-1 out-of state offers will come around as they see the light and don't want to travel to far away schools to play ball. EWU is on the map, and many Washington/Oregon kids are looking our way. Nigel Burton (head Coach at PSU) will be making recruiting more challenging as he wants the I-5 Corridor, Seattle to Eugene. Montana and Montana State also in the mix as we lost recruits to them last year. Just keep winning baby, the recruits biggest aspect ! Will let you know when I hear more.

luckily I'm not too worried about Portland State stealing recruits from washington....we have a winning tradition that they do not.

I agree; we should win most head-to-head recruting matchups with Portland State. However, history tells us that they have been the one school we compete with for kids on a regular basis... largely because they have a presence in the I-5 corridor and we have a presence in Oregon.

People always talk about the kids we go head-to-head with the Montana schools on, but for every one of those there's 3 we go up against Portland State on.

As far as recruiting goes

1) Montana - It is a machine and with the deep playoff runs they make they usually get first crack at who they want especially out of state prospects.

2) PSU - Basing this on new upgrades to stadium and power of Nigel Burton who by all accounts is probably the best recruiter/personality in the Big Sky and is well known in Portland area where there is plenty of talent around. Voted top 25 people to know in Portland Area. Coach Ash mentioned him by name as someone who is very tough to recruit against.

3) Montana State - 8 years of winning record, stadium upgrades, sold out stadium, helps but have to work hard to find talent, have a good reputation for business and engineering/science majors

4) EWU - Inferno, history of making playoffs, explosive offense, lots of talent nearby.

4b) Weber - Coach Mac has a very wide net that he covers and pulls in gems every year. Don't know how he does it but he does. Specializes in nabbing big lineman on both sides of the ball.

5) Sac State/UNC/NAU - Sperbeck is probably ahead in locking down Sacromento area and keeping Cali kids local. Gives him a big advantage and it is starting to show. UNC - same thing but a year behind. NAU always does well nabbing talent.

6) Idaho State - lots of work required..MSU snagged our punter and a backup qb from them...keep em coming

Call me a homer but I always look forward to the over-achieving small town EW kids we get and develop into DI athletes. Jesse Hardt, Jacob Kragt, Ashton Gant, J.C. Sherritt and Matt Martin are good examples - and there are a ton of others.

Sorry, but no way does PSU have any recruiting advantages over Eastern - or MSU, for that matter.

Call me a homer, but I'd break it down like this:

1. Montana:

Pro's - National Championships, winning tradition, great fans, great stadium. Able to recruit the entire west coast due to the Griz name. Get many drop-down players for the same reason. Sizeable recruiting budget due to the number of out of state scholarships they have to give out to maintain their dominance in the BSC.

Cons - Not many. Montana's geographical location might make some recruits go someplace closer to home.

2. Montana State:

Pro's - Good facilities, good fans, good tradition. Good athletics budget for recruiting. Administration seems committed to athletic success. Have made some nice recruiting pipelines in some areas that BSC don't normally go - namely, Texas.

Cons - Same as Montana geographically, although amplified slightly due to Bozeman's even more remote location. Also, MSU is somewhat overshadowed in the region by UM.

3. Sacramento State:

Pro's - Geographical location means that Sac can recruit almost exclusively in the state of California. Good facilities. Located in a major media market.

Con's - Lack of winning tradition, over-shadowed by California FBS schools.

4. Eastern Washington:

Pro's - Big recruiting advantage over many BSC schools due to it's geographical location. Very good at nabbing recruits over-looked by UW and WSU. Have also done an excellent job in recruiting of skill positions in California (Meyer, Nichols, Jones). BSC version of "QB U". Winning tradition and consistent play-off participants. Inferno.

Con's - Smaller recruiting budget as compared to UM and MSU. Somewhat over-shadowed by in-state Pac-10 schools. Facilities are improving, but still not at a level that a premier Division I FCS school be at.

5. Portland State:

Pro's - Upgrades to PGE Park means PSU will play football in one of the nicer facilities in the conference. Located in major media market. Lots of nearby talent.

Con's - Have not done much winning lately. Over-shadowed by Oregon and Oregon State in the region.

6. Northern Arizona:

Pro's - Decent facilities (as far as domes go). Decent winning percentage. Flagstaff is a nice area.

Con's - Over-shadowed by in-state Arizona, Arizona State. Have not appeared in the play-offs or won a BSC title in quite some time.

7. Weber State:

Pro's - Good facilities. Recent BSC Championship and play-off appearances.

Con's - Weber is a basketball school, and always will be. Massively over-shadowed by Utah, BYU, and to a lesser extent USU.

8. Northern Colorado:

Pro's - Winning tradition in Division II. Located near major media market.

Con's - That winning tradition has not carried over into FCS. The Bears have become perrenial cellar-dwellars in the BSC. Facilities are nothing to write home about.

9. Idaho State:

Pro's - New AD seems committed to improving ISU's lot in life. Are working on various facility improvements.

Con's - If they don't win another game this year, they will have a combined 3 wins over the last 3 seasons. Not many players want to go to Pocatello. Holt Arena is a dump and ISU desperately needs a new playing surface. Over-shadowed by Boise State, BYU, Utah State. No stability in the program whatsoever.

*Edit* If I had to place CP and Davis in there, they'd probably be around 3B and 3c, respectively.

I like your assment in all schools but EWU. You didn't mention they are also overshadowed in recruiting by UW, WSU, and Montana. Also, I sat with Nigel Burton for 2 days last January (2010), and he is young and very motivational toward the athletes, and he is serious, he wants the I-5 Corridor from Seattle to Salem, his words. PSU is very competitive this year and he's getting alot of D-1A athletes who weren't playing at UW/UO/OSU/Nevada, etc, the dude has some connections and his coaching staff is early 30's and relate really well to the kids. My son chose EWU over PSU/MSU and Nigel Burton promised things WILL change at PSU. Hell, they almost beat Montana today. This was the only reason I made this post, he is very convincing. Also, Ash of MSU is a nice guy (more like a CEO) but tends to scare recruits off, his staff are the ones who get them to commit. They are recruiting Dallas/Houston heavily as well as Calf. Time will tell. Washington has a massive amount of athletes that get no real looks from the PAC-10 schools as they favor calf. This has been and will always be EWU's advantage, get those overlooked athletes from WA, show them that we win, and introduce them to the coaching staff and some of the players and they are hooked. It worked for us as my son had 8 offers, 2 D-1A, and ended up here. Now at 5-2, we are jacked, with playoff implications. Lastly, Kids want to go to a school that wins, goes to the playoffs, has great facilities, great coaches and a solid team atmosphere. EWU has all, except the stadium, but the Red turf will help. Did you notice they really didn't mention academics? Academics are important to student athletes but as long as they get a degree, it doesn't really matter where it's from. Contraversial, but true. Peace.

Here is the list of current offers (according to rivals)

P Name Loc Ht Wt 40 Offers from

RB Alphonse Wade Auburn, WA 6'1" 185 4.5 (EWU, Idaho, Air Force, Army)
QB Brett Smith Salem, OR 6'2" 185 N/A (EWU, San Jose State, NMSU, Wyoming)
OL Thomas Gomez Graham,WA 6'3" 280 N/A (EWU, Nevada)
RB Cameron McKernan Kent, WA 5'11" 200 4.4 (EWU, Air Force, NMSU, Wyoming, Portland State)
RB Chandler Jenkins Issaquah, WA (EWU, Wyoming)
TE Hayden Plinke Hillsboro, OR 6'4" 224 4.5 (EWU, Air Force)

The recruiting list is pretty large, but I only included kids with offers.

Plinke would be a huge grab for EWU if we could manage to get him. He's from Hillsboro........hmm, wonder if he was at the game last night? :D

I'm not so sure Portland State has much in the way of recruiting pull... I've gone to many PSU games, and they make our games look like the Big House. Seriously, the crowd last night was 4,500 and literally half of the fans were Eastern peeps. Had they been playing Northern Arizona or Idaho State instead, it might have been 2,500 or less. Granted the rain was pouring, but there were no students to note at all. It was pretty sad, really.

I read this morning on Scout.com that David Jones, Jr. from Kent-Meridian now has an offer from EWU, making it two for him (Portland State). I've seen him play and the kid is for real. 4.4 or 4.5 speed depending on where you read it, 6-1, 195 lbs. His grades are over 3.0 and he runs hills on his own time after practices. I watched him play on Friday and he sure passes the eyeball test. Scouts on the sidelines from CWU and PSU. I didn't see any others.

He's been playing QB for the last couple of years but that's not where he'll play in college. I think his lack of offers is a result of that, coupled with playing for pretty much the historically second worst team in the SPSL (Mt. Rainier being the worst). This year, K-M is 4-5. They'd be 1-8 without Jones...

One has to imagine that with the bye week coming up, the coaches might be on the recruiting trail some. While teams that are sitting home might have an early start in this regard, a home playoff game could actually help in regards to getting the name out there. It's also an additional game to have potential recruits come to.

Has anyone heard anything about how recruiting is going? I know there are a few offers out there, but I am wondering if he have any verbals yet.

yet.
I'm pretty sure they said yesterday at the pass gate that they can't give away tickets to the playoff games, which is too bad when you ask recruits to come a long way already...

Updated recruiting list (offers only). Various sources, take it for what it's worth:

RB Jordan Talley Portland, OR 5'10" 180 4.5

ATH Quincy Forte Vacaville, CA 5'11" 180

OL Thomas Gomez Graham, WA 6'3" 280
"Gomez has been offered by both Nevada and Eastern Washington. This past weekend he took an unofficial visit to Eastern. Gomez offered up his thoughts on the trip, as well as the new red field turf.
The visit went really well, they beat a good Montana team, said Gomez. “I thought that the new red field was awesome. Eastern Washington is the early favorite for Gomez. However, it’s not all bad news for the Grizzlies, who also found their way onto Gomez’s wish list. I have been talking to some other schools that I think might offer, said Gomez. I hope to get an offer from Montana, Montana State, and Portland State.”

QB David Jones Jr. Kent, WA 6'0" 200 4'5

"With his 6'1", 190-pound frame and 4.5 speed, Jones has become an intriguing prospect among four-year coaches and even has offers from two FCS programs. Eastern Washington and Portland State have both offered me," Jones said. "Washington, Washington State, Idaho and Oregon are all recruiting me and seem to like me, but none of them have offered right now. UNLV and Nevada are both looking at me too and I might be setting up a visit to Nevada down the road, but right now that isn't set up."

TE Hayden Plinke Hillsboro, OR 6'4" 221 4.5

RB Alphonse Wade Auburn, WA 6'1" 185 4.5

“I have been hearing from a few schools so far, said Wade. San Diego, Army, Air Force, Eastern Washington and Idaho mostly, they have all offered.”

QB Brett Smith Salem, OR 6'2" 185

"As of about a month ago, Salem (Ore.) West Salem quarterback Brett Smith was committed to play at San Jose State. But, conference shuffling and other factors have led to Smith opening the process back up. I don’t really want to say which schools until things get more concrete, said Smith. “But I have been talking to some schools, as well as the schools that were already recruiting me. Smith has already been offered by San Jose State, Wyoming, Eastern Washington and New Mexico State. Other schools are getting in the mix and want to see some of his senior tape."

RB Cameron McKernan Kent, WA 5'11" 200 4.4

"Kent (Wash.) Kentridge running back Cameron McKernan just received some good news from one of his favorite programs. Idaho offered me this week. McKernan already held offers from Air Force, Eastern Washington, Portland State, Wyoming and New Mexico State. Even with the late offer, Idaho is a team that McKernan is very familiar with. They have been recruiting me for a while,” said McKernan. “I took an unofficial visit there in the spring.”

RB Chandler Jenkins Issaquah, WA

I know I'm beating a a dead horse here, but has anyone heard anything more on how recruiting has been going?

I'm actually wondering if deep playoff runs could actually have an adverse effect on recruiting, since we'll be getting such a late start.

I guess traditionally, a lot of kids don't sign until Feb anyway, so maybe I am overplaying this a bit.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports that Kyle Warner, (db 6-3 185) who is on the TNT all area team, is 'considering playing at Eastern Washington'. Warner, from Tumwater (home of EW's Johnson twins) helped his team win the 2A state championship yesterday (34-14 over Archbishop Murphy). He was Evergreen Conference MVP, totaling 25 touchdowns (by runs, catches and returns) and setting a school record with three kickoff returns for tds. Recruit him hard EWU, being from a smaller 2A school he may get overlooked.

The eagsports.com site, generally the best source for all things recruitin g, is pretty much offline at the present. What totally sucks is that the rvials network still billed me my annual fee of $100 despite the fact there is no content on that site.

Nothing on Warner on rivals or scout.com, but here's a couple of snippets I found:

http://www.theolympian.com/2010/12/04/1462354/ask-and-he-shall-receive.html

At 6-foot-3 and 180 pounds, Warner has proven he can be solid at any position. He has seen time at wide receiver, running back, and free safety this season, and opposing teams have learned not to let No. 13 near the ball on kickoffs. He has 410 yards on kickoff returns alone.

He has amassed 1,654 all-purpose yards and scored a team-high 29 touchdowns. He has scored at least one touchdown in each of the team’s 12 games, including four in each of the past two playoff games – a 49-8 quarterfinal win over Burlington-Edison, and Monday’s 63-27 semifinal victory against Spokane East Valley.

The Tumwater team recently had two special guests visit and speak about the playoffs – Zach and Matt Johnson, former players at Tumwater who graduated in 2007 and are now playing football at Eastern Washington. One of the messages they reinforced was making it a business trip to the Tacoma Dome.
