2010-2011 Recruiting Thread

Just saw on scout.com.....

Alec Martin, TE/DE Wenatchee HS, has an offer from EWU.

Also has offers from Air Force and Montana State.

As far as recruiting goes

1) Montana - It is a machine and with the deep playoff runs they make they usually get first crack at who they want especially out of state prospects.

2) PSU - Basing this on new upgrades to stadium and power of Nigel Burton who by all accounts is probably the best recruiter/personality in the Big Sky and is well known in Portland area where there is plenty of talent around. Voted top 25 people to know in Portland Area. Coach Ash mentioned him by name as someone who is very tough to recruit against.

3) Montana State - 8 years of winning record, stadium upgrades, sold out stadium, helps but have to work hard to find talent, have a good reputation for business and engineering/science majors

4) EWU - Inferno, history of making playoffs, explosive offense, lots of talent nearby.

4b) Weber - Coach Mac has a very wide net that he covers and pulls in gems every year. Don't know how he does it but he does. Specializes in nabbing big lineman on both sides of the ball.

5) Sac State/UNC/NAU - Sperbeck is probably ahead in locking down Sacromento area and keeping Cali kids local. Gives him a big advantage and it is starting to show. UNC - same thing but a year behind. NAU always does well nabbing talent.

6) Idaho State - lots of work required..MSU snagged our punter and a backup qb from them...keep em coming
Bearing mind the game is a means to the end, an education. Eastern has one of the highest GPA and grad rate of any Big Sky school. Where Mom wants her son to get an education is VERY important. I would expect Beau assuring Mom her son will graduate carries a lot of weight.
Go Eags

You make a great point regarding the off field excellence EWU football demonstrates daily. Would be great to see another Panther from WHS star for the Eagles. Chris Scott from Wenatchee High School was just a beast on our d-line in 1997, the last time we made it this far in the playoffs after we win tomorrow. Chris was on the "100 for 100" team and he was named the top d-linemen in school history. Great to see local kids get a chance at EWU, many of our star players played high school ball in eastern Washington.

Time to revisit. With three weeks off before the National Championship, you have to think that the coaches are going to be hitting the recruiting trail somewhat to make up for some lost time during this playoff stretch.

For the former players out there - what kind of an effect do you think playing in a National Championship will have in recruiting? What about having a game like that televised to a National audience on ESPN2?

I know that we'll almost always lose the recruiting battles to the UW's and WSU's of the world, but one has to think that for some kids that are kind of on the fence, all of this might help.

Update on the recruit mentioned above from Wenatchee, he committed to Air Force. Also talked to a former player who tells me the national JC player of the year is interested in EWU. Said the publicity about the Red got his attention but that playing on turf was just as important as the color. With the title run we are currently experiencing, I'm sure we will hear more about recruits who may come our way. We don't have many seniors so not a lot of holes. Article in today's Spokesman quotes Coach Baldwin about the benefits of all these extra practices, mentioning that it is like getting spring practice twice.

Bought a copy of Sports Illustrated yesterday, what an awesome photo. ESPN2 again on January 7 and a visit to UW next Labor Day weekend to kick off the 2011 season. Folks in our own backyard are learning how good this program is. I suggest you buy your 2011 season tickets as soon as you can.

Join us when the EAA gets together after signing day when Coach Baldwin goes over the new recruits. Always a great event, I remember when Coach Wulff talked about the Johnson twins and about Taiwan, among others. Great to see Paul's hard work pay off, hats off to Beau and our staff for completing the work of Zornes, Kramer and Wulff and getting Eastern back to the title game for the first time since 1967.

Is it this guy?

http://www.lasvegassun.com/news/2010/dec/20/ex-las-vegas-high-star-reggie-bullock-named-juco-f/

Looks like since he won't complete his AA until January, he hasn't gotten a lot of FBS offers since he won't be able to participate in spring ball.

Wow, this dude would be a big grab. We seem sort of stacked at the RB position, but if we ended up grabbing him we could always RS him or someone else, or have him play another position. Our coaches seem to be really good at shuffling our talent around the best effect.

Speaking of JC kids, whatever happened to that three start QB Eastern signed back in 2008? Darius Banks? I noticed he ended up at a JC in Cali. Academic non-qualifier?

Any on more rumors current recruiting? The recruits that are NOT on all of the lists are maybe more important than the recruits everyone is aware of.

According to Rivals, this is the list of guys claiming EWU "interest." There is also a much smaller list of definitive offers... but there is no list of commits. Remember, EWU can't report commits, it must be reported by the recruit. Without Eagsports following up on this stuff, getting information is sketchy... andf you know the Spokesman sure as hell isn't going to do it.

Anyone have any idea what our biggest needs are this year? Defensive lineman stick out, as Jolley is graduating and besides Williams our defensive tackles don't seem real big. DE I think we are fine at. We lose both starting corners. Also need to pick up a couple offensive lineman. Skill positions we seem to be fine.

You can always use quality DL. I'd say that is the singlem ost important position to recruit for on the field, because if they don't work out you can always bulk them into OL or slim them into LBs. But getting that quality big kid that can move his feet into the program always pays dividends.

Aside from that, I'd say CB is the most important position on the field for us to recruit for this year... or just the athlete-type kid that gives you some options of where to play him.

Last year at this time Eastern had only 1 verbal commit, Ryan Seto. You need to wait until they bring in the recruits for their official visits in January, that's what sold last years 14 written commits. Once they see the program, coaches, and hang out with the National Championship players, they start commiting. I know this this because we did!!

I know most kids we get won't commit until either Jan or even signing day in Feb, but it does seem really odd that UM and MSU already have all kinds of commits (albeit mostly from Montana kids), while we are about to play for a National Championship and don't have even one verbal. Usually we have at least a couple at this point. It'd be highly ironic if this deep playoff run actually set us back somehow in recruiting for this year. Hopefully it doesn't.

This is a pretty educated crowd, so I might be preaching to the choir here, but I don't think this is much to get worried about at the moment.

Two things:

1. There probably are some commits... it's just that our local press is terrible about pursuing these things and without a dedicated recruiting site like Eagsports, no one is out there to report it. Remember, our staff can't come out and say "So-and-so committed last night" until after the LOI date. Until that time, unless the kid goes to the press or has someone not involved with the school ask and report it, it goes unnoticed. Scout will sometimes make ote of it, but since we don't have a Scout site, they don't have a lot of motivation to follow up on it.

2. Soft verbals to FCS schools are far softer than verbals to FBS schools. Look at our prize OL recruit Stefo from last year... he basically committed until an FBS school offered a full ride and left at the zero hour. Those things happen with these FBS-quality kids all the time. We usually have to wait to make sure a kid doesn't get BCS-level offers before the commitment solidifies. Even Montana struggles to keep kids that get better offers to bigger schools. That's just how it works.

Just to clarify about Stefo from last years class, he committed to Eastern knowing he had an official to Colorado State the following week. Can't remember if he had an offer in hand from them or not, but he is from Colorado. As far as Easterns prized recruit, I'm not really sure of that, but he would have been a great addition to the OL ranked at #158 OT by scout.com. We did land Jase Butorac of Skyline ranked #81 OG. I think EWUs needs this year are at OL and DBs, they seen fairly deep at DT/DE. I'm saying OL because in 2 years Eastern will start losing alot of OL and as far as DB's, you can never have enough speed. Just my opinion. GO EAGS!!

I'm pretty sure we're going to see Andru Pulu at DT for the Eagles next year. He may be enrolled right now. That's gonna be a big pickup for us. Made a dumb mistake at UW but should have learned from it. I've heard he's in...

This is good news indeed. DT, or DE? He seems like more of a speed-type DE, or even LB.

Yeah, sounds like he got in a little trouble, but like you've said, hopefully he's learned from it.

Sounds like he may have 3 years of eligibility left, too.
