2012 Quarterback search

We still have Josh MIlhollin, who I think redshirted this year. Also, we apparently have Paris Penn and Reece Hack coming in next year as freshmen (I think Nick Rothstein will play safety).

From what we have, I'd be willing to bet that Milhollin will be probably the number one. His spring game throwing was, uh, well, interesting, but he had quite a few reps.

Carter showed a couple of moves in fall camp, so it'll be interesting to see if he's in the running in the spring. He's vertically challenged as they say, but hey, but you can't tell me that CK is actually 6'.

The good part is that these guys have a year in the system.

Other than that, we'd just have an incoming true freshman, or a drop down. Not sure how many options of transfers from a program that runs the pistol are out there. Hey, there's UCLA. That program is pretty much a smoking dumpster fire that should be minus a coach in about a month.

Oregon State football: Quarterback Ryan Katz leaving to "write the next chapter in his story''

Could he be going to Portland State?

For those asking, Portland State coaching source told me staff has not heard anything about Ryan Katz possibly transferring there.

Unless I don't understand the rules correctly, as a transfer, Katz would not be able to play Division 1A next year, but he could play 1AA. I don't believe the coaches could actually be talking to Katz until after he leaves the OSU program, but I could be wrong about the rules.

*Edit* I did a little research, and it looks like he can play anywhere but pac-12.

As I understand it, he would need to find a university that offers a masters program that OSU does not. Same as Masoli from the UO a couple years back.

There's a reason why UCLA is a smoking dumpster. They don't have QBs to run the pistol! Not sure if we'd want any of them!

Good point. I think that we could have at least put a score or two on the board against usc.

As said before, Katz doesn't fit our system. We need a mobile quarterback who isn't afraid to tuck the ball and run when the pocket breaks down. And I thought he was a junior this year, which means that he would still have at least one year of eligibility left (while Masoli I think was a fifth-year senior at Ole Miss).

If anyone from UCLA who isn't a QB wants to come, let them; they have to be good to get on a Pac-12 team. Anyone who did that could play right away.

Plus we should tweak our offense to fit the talent.

I've seen Paris Penn play on several occasions this past year, and he is a SPECIMAN. Don't be surprised if he comes in and earns that starting spot. The offense Grant runs is very similar to the Viks and this kid is strong, fast, and has a very good arm. Can't wait to see!

Thanks for all the great imput on my question. Looking forward to next season knowing we have some great potential in the ranks.

If some of our offers turn into written commitments, we'll have one or two QBs more than Penn. When is National Letter Day?

Apparently Katz was on campus last week checking things out. I still think regardless of his perceived lack of mobility, with the current group of receivers we have, It would be nice to allow some of these younger guys to mature a little before they are thrown into the fire. I would hate to see PSU take even a minor step back next season. There is so much buzz starting around town that it's important for the program to keep moving forward.

Katz is the way to go, I just hope he is interested; glad to hear he was at least on campus checking things out. You don't need a CK to run the Pistol; I think he ran too much anyway. A more balanced pass/run would open both up more. And, to make the Pistol work, the QB just has to get a first down, not run all over the field. From what I remember of Katz in the few games I watched last year, he can run enough. If you look back on all of the deeper open receivers that CK missed, did not see, or just couldn’t get the ball to them, a QB with a good arm would be an improvement. Katz is clearly the way to go; he has a cannon for an arm! I will keep my fingers crossed. One more thing, if he is on campus, then NB thinks he can run the Pistol also.

Any quarterback good enough to start for an FBS team would be a definate asset both on and off the field even if it is for one seaeon.

If Katz was good enough to start every game in 2010 for OSU and would have been the started in 2011 if not for a wrist injury and missing spring football (which may have been a factor in losing out to Manion) has the both the leadership skills to take charge on the field, but also to teach and work with the younger QB's skills for the future. He could also be the leader in the locker room that is so important especially when we have a large number of seniors leaving.
