Just wanted to drop by and let you guys know you're getting a real good running back and solid kid in D.J. Adams. Looking forward to following him in 2012.

That's great to hear! Thanks for dropping by. Any insights why he is transferring? I hope he rips up the Big Sky.

I don't know the details, but for whatever reason, the new coach seemed to prefer a true freshman RB. Nothing against that kid, but most fans thought D.J. was the guy that should have been playing, and was productive in the few chances he did get. He's an excellent short yardage back, which is how MD used him his freshman year, but he's a capable every down back as well. And he handled the demotion this year, and the transfer very maturely. There were more than a few other players who transferred out after this season, I don't hold this against D.J. at all, really hoping he'll do well given the opportunity.

Hopefully the transition from the spread to the pistol will be easy. With Shaq and DJ probably being the first two on the depth chart, I think we'll be set in the backfield.

Ellis Henderson's decision was sort of an "oh by the way" in the Oregonian story. Apparently he was very highly recruited out of high school. He could be a great player for the Vikings.

I'm just worried about Ramirez in the pistol. He sounds like a good pocket passer, but as we saw with UCLA in the past trying to run the pistol with a pro-style QB, it didn't work out so well. Hopefully he has some good legs and can keep defenses honest on running plays.

D.J. I'm looking forward to seeing play. With him, Shaq, Steven Long and hopefully Chevy Walker at the RB, we should be loaded for years to come at that position.

Sheldon long snapper Kameron Canaday commits to Portland State football team

If the recruitment of Kameron Canaday flew a little under the radar, well, such is the life of a long snapper.

The 6-foot-4, 235-pound Canaday was a first-team all-Southwest Conference defensive lineman while helping Sheldon reach the Class 6A football championship game last month, but he made his biggest splash with colleges as the long snapper for the Irish.

He got a boost when he was ranked as the No. 5 long snapper in the nation by the Rubio Long Snapping, a camp and recruiting service for the position, and Portland State, Montana and Idaho State began contacting him.

Canaday committed to Portland State last month, joining a long list of in-state recruits for the Vikings this year. He will get on the field first as a long snapper while trying to work his way into the lineup on offense or defense.

“I will be the long snapper next year and as I get bigger, I will play either tight end or on the defensive line,” Canaday said.

Canaday has been perfecting his craft as a long snapper since long before high school.

“He’s been long snapping since he was in Pop Warner at age 10,” said his dad, Bob Canaday. “He went to a lot of camps and he has gotten good at it. He is considered one of the fastest snappers in the country and that is what catches people’s eye.

“That’s his niche, not to mention that he has the size and the frame that college coaches like.”

Canaday, who is a reserve post on Sheldon’s boys basketball team, is heading to a Rubio camp in Las Vegas this weekend.

“We work on technique,” Canaday said. “Speed and accuracy is the key and what really separated me from the rest of the guys is my size. I’ve been playing basketball, so I may be rusty, but we will see how I do.”

Canaday is one of three Irish players to get a scholarship offer from PSU and the first to commit. National signing day is Feb. 1.

Lineman Sam McCaskill, who also has an offer from Montana, is scheduled to visit Oregon State next weekend before selecting his college.

Linebacker Dawson Housley is expected to make his college choice next week.

Kyle Smith, a 6-foot-6, 280-pound lineman from Elmira, will join Canaday at Portland State. The Class 4A defensive player of the year committed to the Vikings earlier this month.

“I wanted to get into business and they had one of the best business schools around here,” Smith said. “It is local and all the coaches are really cool.”

Smith is expected to play on the offensive line for the Vikings, but they have also mentioned the possibility of playing him on defense.

“They recruited me for offense, but I have been thinking about defense too because it is more fun, more enjoyable,” he said.

Marshfield’s Dalton Milburn committed to PSU in October as an offensive lineman.

Henderson leaving Hawaii for Portland St.
Former Skyview football standout returns close to home

http://www.columbian.com/news/2012/jan/13/henderson-leaving-hawaii-for-portland-st/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Former Skyview football standout Ellis Henderson is coming home.

Well, close to home anyway.

Henderson, who was a grayshirt athlete in football this season and a part-time student at the University of Hawaii, is in the process of changing schools and said he intends to sign with Portland State University.

He visited with the Vikings over the winter break.

“It was interesting. I (know) Portland, but I had never actually been on campus,” Henderson said. “It’s really nice campus, a really nice school. I was weary of taking the trip. In the end, I was really happy I did.”

Things did not go as planned at Hawaii.

“It’s not just one thing. There were a lot of factors,” Henderson said of his decision.

Henderson, who graduated from Skyview in 2011, signed with Hawaii last February. As a grayshirt athlete, he was told he could come to Hawaii as a part-time student and work out with the team and learn the playbook, in preparation of becoming a full-time student and then playing for the Warriors beginning in the fall of 2012.

“I was promised a lot of stuff and told a lot of things that didn’t really come true,” Henderson said. “The biggest thing for me coming out here was being part of a family. It was totally the opposite. I had to do things on my own. I wasn’t prepared for that. I had an idea of what it was going to be like, and that did not manifest. That’s the bottom line.”

Hawaii also just went through a coaching change, and Henderson said he missed his family.

“I definitely would have liked to watch my brother play and Skyview play because they were awesome this year,” Henderson said.

Reiley Henderson, a junior at Skyview, was an All-Region wide receiver for Skyview, which made it to the Class 4A state championship game.

Ellis Henderson started looking for other options in early December.

Henderson sent his high school highlight videos to college coaches and made contact with a number of programs that had offered him last year.

“Portland State was the first one to jump, and they asked me to visit,” Henderson said.

Henderson said he was told he will have the chance to play cornerback as well as some wide receiver packages. He also expects to be in the return game.

“The opportunity to do all those things right away is pretty nice,” he said.

Henderson said he can enroll at PSU in April, work with the team in the spring, and he will be eligible to play in the fall. He also said he will be eligible to play four seasons in five years.

Henderson spoke to The Columbian via phone from Hawaii, where he is packing for the move. He said he expects to be in Vancouver by Monday.

Collin Ramirez Commits to Portland State

Butte Quarterback Collin Ramirez has committed to play football at Portland State next year. Ramirez, who played his high school football for Red Bluff, threw for 30 touchdowns this past season setting a Butte record. (with a short video).

Looks like it down to Montana, Montana St and Portland State. Would be a great replacement for Zach Brown after next year. Go Viks!

Lake Oswego Kicker Hearing From Lots Of Schools

"Portland State would be closing out their amazing recruiting class in a big way if they could pull the Laker and we may see him at Jeld Wen Field after all."

If we could get him, that would be a big steal. That would make losing Brown after next season a little more palatable.

Love Coach Burton's confidence. From his Twitter page:

Bowden to PSU

Marist senior Colton Bowden has accepted an offer to walk on to the Portland State football team as a punter.

Bowden was a first-team all-state selection in Class 5A after averaging 38.9 yards on 28 punts this year for the Spartans.

Nearly one-third of his punts landed inside the 20-yard line, and he had a long of 60.

The 6-foot, 190-pound Bowden, who was honorable-mention all-Midwestern League at linebacker for the Spartans, began punting when he started high school and is ranked as the No. 45 punter in the nation by Chris Sailer Kicking, a camp and recruiting service for kickers.

He is the top-ranked punter in Oregon.

Thomas Duyndam is the lone punter on PSU’s roster, and he will be a senior next season, so Bowden is hoping to replace him in 2013.

Elmira update

A story that ran in this paper Tuesday said that when Elmira senior Kyle Smith signs a letter of intent to play football at Portland State next month, he is believed to be the first boy in school history to earn a full athletic scholarship to college, but Robert Kornmann called to dispute that claim. Kornmann said he was on a full ride when he signed to play football at Oregon State in 1980. Kornmann played center for the Beavers from 1981-83.
