2012 Recruiting Thread

Looks like this should be updated throughout the day for signings:

Hopefully it's just an oversight, but Tyrone Holmes isn't on that list. Anyone hear anything about his status? I know some recruiting sites have him as the top rated recruit in this class.

Losing Holmes would be a killer for us. We really needed his size and speed.

Up-to-Date Signings are here: http://goviks.com/sports/2012/1/31/FB_0131121902.aspx?id=190

So is this a list of guys that have signed LOI's? If so it looks like we got everybody that verbally committed except for Holmes and Olive and added a couple of others.

Don't know anything about Zack Ka'ahanui, but I assume he'll have to sit out a year if he's transferring from NAU

It sucks that the two players we lost were probably going to do good things on the D-Line. Not taking anything from Nall and our other prospects there, but those two were projected to be good ones, and we really needed some more bulk and speed up front. :|

And he doesn't need to sit out. That rule only applies to FBS schools. That's why DJ Adams can play right away.

You got it right, here's the official signing list from goviks.com:

Vikings Act Locally On Signing Day, Getting 23 New Student-Athletes

Ka'ahanui, I think, is eligible to play right away. He played in 09, redshirted in 10 and did not play in 11.

I would expect Coach Burton to sign at least 2-3 more players before spring practice. All in all a great recruiting class! Go Viks!! :thumb:

Hopefully we'll be able to find a few more good players by Spring, because it seems like there was an estimate that we had 25-26 scholarships to use.

National signing day: Portland State lands one of best classes in FCS :D :thumb:

PSU loads up in areas of need

http://www.portlandtribune.com/sports/story.php?story_id=132813714109138200" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Portland State signed three quarterbacks and two running backs in a 23-player letter-of-intent day.

Coach Nigel Burton said the Vikings needed QBs and safeties, primarily, and he made 5-11, 205-pound David Edgerson, a safety from Slidell, La., one of five junior-college signees.

Also coming to PSU from the JC ranks is quarterback Collin Ramirez, a 6-2, 195-pound junior-to-be from Butte College and Red Bluff, Calif.

Ramirez, who joined the Viks during the December early signing period, will have competition at QB from two other new Viks – Paris Penn from Grant High and Keiran McDonagh out of Skyview High in Vancouver, Wash. Penn is 6-0, 205, and McDonaugh is 6-2, 230.

The running back crop consists of 5-7, 175 Steven Long, who led Lake Oswego to the Class 6A title last season, and 5-10, 220 DJ Adams, a junior transfer from Maryland.

Adding to the options at safety, the Vikings inked Jesuit High's Nicholas Rothstein, 5-11, 205.

Cornerback Dennis Fite, 6-3, 190, from San Jacinto College and Citrus Hills, Calif., also could see immediate playing time in the defensive backfield.

The local flavor of the Viking recruiting class includes two other players from Grant – 6-1, 230 linebacker Daniel Halverson and 6-3, 190 receiver Jamarr Graves.

From Central Catholic High, PSU gets defensive end Jacob Nall (6-4, 230) and defensive tackle Zack Ka'ahanui (6-1, 265), a transfer from Northern Arizona.

Defensive line also was another important area for the Viking recruiters, and the LOI day netted incoming freshman Cam Sommer (6-4, 220) from Gladstone High and Tamasi Molesi (6-1, 280), a junior transfer out of Arizona Western via Oceanside, Calif.

Linebacker was more of a need for the future, with two other Portland-area preps joining the squad – Zach Walen (6-3, 200) of Lake Oswego and Brandon Brody-Heim (5-11, 220) from Union High in Vancouver.

Fun Signing Party. Well done by the Athletic Department.

Great to hear Burton on The Fan on the way home. Also great to hear about our recruiting class was great from the broadcast on the Blazer game when I got home. Very good things are happening.

Man, our three O lineman recruits have some height. 6'5, 6'6, and 6'7. I know there is always that mindset that you need quickness, but there's something to be said about having some big hogs up front that can move the line when you need a yard or two...

Now when does spring ball start? ;-)

The rule is that transferring players that are moving down one or more levels of competition to do not have to sit out (for instance Adams going from 1-A Maryland to 1-AA Portland State), but players moving laterally or up one or more levels of competition must sit out one year (for example Benjarvus Green-Ellis, now of the Pats, transferred from Indiana to Ole Miss and sat out a year in between) regardless of the division of competition of their initial school, although there is an exception for players that have completed their undergraduate degree and still have one year of eligibility remaining (Masoli, Russell Wilson and Katz have taken advantage of this).

However as forestgreen notes it looks like Ka'ahanui sat out last year so he should be good to go in 2012.

Overall this class is amazing, far better than what I would have expected 6 months ago and although it sucks to lose those two impact DT's don't forget that Molesi was rated higher than either of them coming out of high school (4 stars).

With respect to the remaining scholarships, I know Burton adopted the strategy of from his days at Oregon State to keep a few open after signing day because a number high caliber players don't sign right away for a variety of reasons, so hopefully we can scoop up a couple more elite recruits (that's how we got Julius Moore).

This is a great class for PSU. Love the potential for everyone of these guys. There are some real exciting prospects that I am very eager to see play. There are always going to be some disappointing misses. I could name disappointments for each PAC 12 and Big Sky school. That's part of the game. The real measure is how many of our guys are still here 3-5 years from now. And we need to keep the recruiting going year after year.

All in all a great job for this class.

I had to agree with Canzano though, Coach Burton, despite saying otherwise, sounded tired on the radio yesterday. I bet those coaches are going to be hard to get a hold of for a couple of days.

"OP: Darnell Adams of Newberg is going to forego a Full ride to WOU and Walk on at PSU!! That is probably a good decision in his case as he really looks the part to make it. There is one guy who is going to go for it! "

Great point.

However, I think that recruiting local kids can help reduce attrition of players. In both basketball and football we seem to pick up some local kids that initially go elsewhere, that transfer back home for one reason or another. You can't get homesick when you stay at home in the first place. :-)

I hope everything works out with Bowden. Duyndam will be a senior and if Bowden is as good as advertised, we should be set for a while.
