2013 Recruiting Thread

Anyone know how many scholarships the Viks have to offer this year? If my count is correct, and no one backs out before Wednesday, they have 19 commits.

Big, Big News!:

Mater Dei All-County linebacker J.C. Genova and Tesoro All-County running back Nate Tago have committed to Portland State, the seniors said in a text messages Tuesday night.
That’s two great gets for the FCS school. Both those are excellent players.
The players didn’t work on tandem on their commitments but Tago called Genova’s commitment a “bonus!”
Look for Genova to perhaps move to safety. :)

Letters of Intent as of Feb 6, 2013:

Kahlil Dawson (WA) DB/SB
Bryon Bodon (OR) OL/DL
Austin Powell (OR) OL/DL
Austin Baird (OR) WR
Alex Sirois (OR) OL
Justin Outslay (OR) DE
Chad Bach (OR) OL
John Norcross (WA) LB/RB
Tyson Heller (CA - JC) TE
Jake Woolley (CA - JC) LB
Desmond Thompson (WA) DL
Jeremy Lutali (CA - JC) LB
Josh Kraght (WA) QB/ATH22
Davond Dade (CA) DE
Daniel Fusi (CA - JC) DL
Ryan Brown (OR) OL
Xavier Coleman (OR) ATH
Nate Tago (CA) RB
J.C. Genova (CA) LB
Hayden Plinke (OR/Boise St.) TE
Marcus Kinsella (AUS) P/K

The only player the Viks had a commitment from that apparently backed out was Bruce Jones (Sunset H.S.) RB/DB. Any news as to whether he has committed somewhere else? Also, Nate Tago could be something special, as well as Plinke!

Looks like Australia has become PSU's go to place for punters and kickers. Marcus Kinsella comes from the same club as Thomas Duyndam.

With this much talent, the coaches have no excuse not to produce a winning team for the next few years. The coaches showed us they definitely can recruit, now they need to show us they can coach.

Youth and high spirits? Being away from home? Boise culture?

Would like to know what precipitated this action. Assuming that Burton feels comfortable with history - weird because Hayden was Student Body President at Glencoe.

As a Boise State fan (lifelong) I can tell you that Plinke and Hightower both were kicked out of Boise State University (not the football team) for actions which violated the student conduct code. And one has to do something pretty seriously wrong in order for that to occur, i.e., rape, assault, grand theft, etc. I don't pretend to know the specifics - but it was NOT a case of youthful hijinks or youthful indiscretion.

The only other time I can recall a football player at Boise State being kicked out of school there was about eight or nine years ago when a certain J.C. transfer was caught (and admitted to) stealing computers (plural) from the school. That individual was charged with grand theft and prosecuted and jailed. Obviously that is not what Plinke (and Hightower) did as they too would now both be facing prosecution if that were the case.

Whatever it was that Plinke did he did it WITH his now former teammate Lee Hightower and possibly with a third football player named Eric Agbaroji - and now all three of them are gone from Boise State.

P.S. I forgot to mention that there was another football player (a place kicker) who also was removed from the football team because he did not REPORT what he knew about this incident to the coaching staff. He was Plinke's roommate at Boise State I believe - and the fact that he did not report what he knew of their actions cost him his scholarship at Boise State. But he was already in the "dog house" at Boise State for some actions of his own.

Thanks for the info, Bronco. As Scooter points out, he was class president, for crying out loud! Inflated ego I can do no wrong syndrome? Did Hightower talk him into it? We don't know, but you can be sure Burton does, and he's willing to give the guy a chance. We can do the same.

Guess we'll rehab him here. What could have happened to this past class president of a top-notch high school in Hillsboro? We welcome the prodigal back home and, hopefully, he's got the squandering wildness processed out of him and he's ready to settle down and play some serious football.

I sure like Brad Davis.

I would hope that since he is from Hillsboro and he is essentially coming home, his parents and other adult figures in his life will take an active role in keeping him on the straight and narrow and prove he deserves this second chance and that second chances only come once.

My GUESS would be that they simply did something VERY stupid. Who talked who into what.....doesn't matter. They both did whatever it was that resulted in both of them getting kicked out of school.

I'm sure he is now MUCH wiser as a result of all this and Portland State now has an excellent tight end as a result.

Last spring and last fall Plinke was THE talk of both camps (as a GS FR). The coaches (and fans) at BSU were very excited to see him in action last fall as he was THAT good (better than the other, more senior, TE's on the team). Great size and speed and good hands too. He's an excellent player - no question about that at all. Good luck to him there at PSU.

In some ways the kid should just come clean, just to stop all the speculation. If there was some sort of major criminal offense, I can only conclude that charges would be pending and that it would be well known what happened. So, based on that assumption, I would not want anyone to judge me too harshly on something I may have done as an 18-19 year old.

It's obvious that Coach Burton knows what happened, most likely there is some sort of double secret probation between Plinke, his parents and Burton. I'm sure he is on a very short leash. Once a school gets a reputation of letting bad people in to it's football program, it can be a tough one to off load. Burton has maintained all along that they are running a program built with good kids, and until I see differently, I will trust his judgement on this signee and assume that the kid was away from home, got involved with something that spiraled out of control and made some really bad decisions. Given that there are very few facts other than the expulsion to go on, I have to wonder if Burton was able to or did talk to the Boise coaching staff. I just don't know if that is even allowed. No doubt he talked to previous HS coaches and people that knew this kid. I just hope whatever happened is a blip on the timeline of this kids life, and that he learned a valuable lesson about consequences of your actions.
