2014 Recruits

I know its the way the recruiting game has come to be played, but isn't it a bit ridiculous for college coaches to be offering scholarships to kids whose junior year season in high school hasn't even started yet? I guess this isn't even that early nowadays, as some kids are being offered scholies after their freshman year.

Pretty sure the latest Haws bro was still drinking milk from a bottle and in a diaper when BYu offered him, GaGa was a yes, I think

After our recent commitments, our need to recruit more guards has diminished tremendously. We now have two spots open on our team for next year. What are our best options? Do we go after two more this fall or just one?

I am thinking that there may be an advantage to leaving one spot open until spring or summer. One or more of the current walk on players could actually make the team, some high level recruit could still be floating around, or a D1 transfer could surface. The problem with filling everything up this fall is that we limit our options. I think that you only sign two if they are at the level of Jeremiah and Omar, or better, at their positions. :coffee:

If two are out there to get this fall then get them. We need a real strong class to come in next year. We are going to be real young the next two years. Hajek and Williams will be our only seniors and neither is likely to start. Bolomboy will be the only Junior.

we already have a strong recruiting class, no matter what happens from this point on to spring. I wouldn't just sign two because we have two spots to fill. I feel that at least one of our walk on players will earn a scholarship. To not have one available for that purpose could be the wrong message to send. If you fill that last slot with a 4 or 5 star guy, then that might be OK. At that point you are, basically, shutting the door on everyone else. I can think of several outstanding players in the past who we would not have signed if we didn't have a scholarship available. :coffee:

Right now, the 2014 Class consists of:

Braxton
Richardson
Van Pelt
Jefferson

and we have two spots left. What to do?!? Well, if it was up to me, and thankfully, it isn't. I would hope to sign Omar Sherman and if another talent became available take him. If not, wait till next spring and see what happens. Scotty B, Gill, The Show, etc etc etc were all spring signees. And who knows about the availability of a transfer. Some of our absolute best players have been spring transfers. Look at Davion Berry. I don't think it is a dumb thing to keep a scholarship open in case of someone transferring. But, we definitely need to be using all of our aloted scholarships in the future. Our depth is thin now because of the transfer of two and Hajek being out.

By the way Oldrunner, you mentioned Zaid in another post. Just curious, why was he here? Also, very cool that you got to see Supaman!! I wished he would have been able to make the 50 greatest event.

Have to be careful...... Everyone needs to get academic approval by the NCAA's and actually sign their LOI. The staff is fully aware of their situation and will protect their interest against verbals that might be a little soft. I think the signing day is in November. We also don't know if there is a roster player considering leaving the team.

Early verbals are awesome, but cross your fingers against losing one or two in the next couple of months.

You definitely bring up a great point. Gotta make sure each of these kids stay on track and actually sign their LOI's. There are a number of programs, LK's down at the U of U, that like to try to poach talent after a kid has verballed. Most programs actually respect a kids verbal as a commitment, but there are those few who don't. Gotta stay vigilant.

PURP;

Yes. Zaid was there to say hello to all of his friends on our team and the coaches. What a great kid. He is as big a fan as we are. Superman was there last Friday. He looks the same as always. He is one of my all time favorites. At 6'1'' he was our best post player, our best wing, and our best point guard. He was fun to watch in games, but in practice he would do some truly amazing things that he wouldn't try in a game. Bruce Collins was like that, as well. :notworthy:

Oldrunner, I meant if there are two out there of a high level, then get them. I agree with you, we already have a strong class that has verbalized. No reason to get two more verbals just 'cause. But again, if the talent is there this fall take it. No reason to wait till Spring.

2015 G Darrian Traylor is taking unofficial visits to Weber State (9/28) and San Francisco (10/5).

I understand that he has some family connections to Weber State. That might help with this one. :thumb:
Looks like a big time recruit. Just look at the list of schools that have already offered or are showing interest.

Yeah, he has quite the list already assembled. I like how he is visiting as many of the schools possible to get a better feel for the recruiting process, and to find the school that best fits him. Could this be an early commit? If he is really good that would be pretty cool.

I know of a Traylor who played football a while ago. Maybe that is his connection?

BYU just offered and got a commitment from HS Soph (2016) Frank Jackson from Lone Peak HS. Assuming he goes on a mission, he won't even play for the Cougars until the 2018-19 season (2019-20 season if he red shirts).

The Lone Peak pipeline... Well, I guess it is a good thing, if you are LDS, you aren't having tithing donations wasted on Rose flying all over the country looking for recruits. He has a stockpile in his backyard.

A sophomore?? Jackson just finished his Sophomore year right? Or is he about to start his Sophomore year? Seems like a bit early to pull the trigger if you ask me. I guess a university can always drop the recruit if they aren't living up to the image the university wants them to maintain. It does make life really easy for Rose. I'm really curious to see how this latest group of Lone Peaker's workout for Rose. Haws and Emery are automatic mission guys. Emery is already gone from what I've heard (I heard he and Cannon played some ball against each other at the MTC. Never found out who got the better of whom, Ha!) but Mika is playing this year and will be used by the Cougars. Will be interesting to see how things go for him against the Cats and our veteran Tresnak in the middle. I'm really hoping Tres, does what Davies did to us last year and uses the Freshman like catcat uses Charman after a baker!!

He'll be a sophomore this year. He still has three years of high school :yikes:. He played his freshman season at Lehi, where he scored 30 points on Nick Emery and Lone Peak. But, of course, he jumped on the bandwagon, moved uptown to Alpine, and transferred to Lone Peak. Damn, I'm glad I don't live in that Happy Valley bubble. What a strange, strange place.
