2014 Starting 5

I'm going to put it out there now, I think the 2014 depth chart right now looks like this:

PG--- Senglin, Hunter
SG--- Gittens, Golden, Jefferson, Richardson, Kennedy
SF--- Coston, Hill,
PF--- Bolomboy, Hill
C---- Braxton, Hajek, Van Pelt

Joel, will play 4 and 5 :twocents:

Jeremy
Chris or Jermiah
Richaud
Kyndahl
Joel

My reasons are if you listen to the coaches and watch what's been going on. They will start the season with Joel at the 5 to cause matchup nightmares he causes and with Joel's improving post game. They are not ready yet to have Richaud at the 2 simple because they want more ball handling and shooting on the floor but they like him attaching from the 3 spot. Kyndahl is going to be a big help on the boards especially on the offensive end and the coaches have been really excited about his improved shooting and ball handling but the word is his leadership so far this year has been huge. I leaning towards Chris because of experience because shooting is even.

You are right on 3Wild. It is real close between Golden and Jefferson. In the spring and the beginning of fall semester, Golden was clearly in the lead. However, Jefferson has made the race much closer lately. It's going to be a tight competition. Right now, James is the first big off the bench and Johnson-Coston is right there as well. Who the fifth guard will be, I haven't a clue. Much may hinge on Golden's relative ability to play both at the point and on the wing. I would put Jefferson into that mix if he were not a freshman. Generally speaking, they don't burden a freshman with learning two positions as different as the point and wing, or a power forward and wing.

Also, as much as we would like to see it happen, Hill and Johnson-Coston will not be playing much on the wing this year unless they decide to red shirt two of the freshmen guards. I don't see that happening, but it is a remote possibility. :coffee:

I'm looking forward to seeing what Rahe comes up with this season. I look back at last years predictions and we were close, but Coach surprised us by starting Senglin. I think the rotations will be decided late October. The only guarantees are Bolomboy, Senglin and maybe Gittens.

It's going to be very competitive for the 2-3 remaining spots.

Mine...

Senglin - Golden - Hunter
Golden - Jefferson - Gittens
Gittens - Jefferson - Richardson - Kennedy
Hill - Bolomboy - J-Coston
Bolomboy - Hajek - Braxton - Van Pelt

I am going to agree with olds on just about all of his list especially Chris over Jermiah for right now. That choice is all about experience for me, I think they are both talented players and you couldn't go wrong with either one. Plus oldrunner was the one that had a feeling about last years line up with a freshmen in it and we ended up with Jeremy. I do have one question about your depth chart though. Who is Williams at the 3 spot

My mistake. There is no Williams. I was thinking Ryan Richardson and my brain made me type Williams. It's not easy getting OLD.   LOL

Senglin
Golden
Gittens
Hill
Bolomboy

First off bench Coston

This is Hills 3rd year with the program and has made some nice improvements over the offseason. If Coston ends up starting, it's because he's just that good.

You guys all need to go take in a pick up game or two. You will be pleasantly surprised by how well Hayek is playing. My opinion is that he is pushing for starters minutes. J-Coston is playing well but not anywhere near as well as Hill, Bolomboy, and Hayek. So far, Hayek is strong and injury free. If that continues, he is going to get a lot of minutes. J-Coston's minutes are going to fluctuate on foul trouble amongst those first three. Also, injuries can play a role at any time. If Braxton is going to get minutes, he is going to have to beat out one of those top three or it won't be worth burning a year of eligibility for the few minutes he would get. :coffee:

I don't think there's even a remote chance Rahe is going to redshirt the kid in hopes of saving eligibility for future years. He's to good a player to accept that role.

I'm not sure what they added to your medication Oldrunner but I just done see it happening! You have a better chance of Williams coming off the bench!

We have had some players rated better than three star in the past who couldn't even win any playing time at a JC.

Man, I usually refrain from responding to your more outlandish comments, but that is just too absurd of a statement to ignore. We have never had a 4 star player, much less a 4 star player that couldn't win any playing time at a JC.

At least I am making a, somewhat, educated guess after seeing these guys play about five times and listening to what the coaches have to say about how they are playing. I put a little more stock in what the coaches are telling me than what I am seeing. They see them every day. :wall:

Olds, with all due respect please stop the " I have seen these guys play 5 times so I know better than you" condescending posts. If I had a buck for every time you were wrong on these boards, I would be rich. Some of it just doesn't need to be said. We all know that you think Braxton is going to redshirt. I have promised to buy you a first class steak dinner if he does. Can we just leave it for a little while.

The problem is that people are reading your posts and thinking that we as fans are down on him and are not happy that he is here. This is just your opinion. Did you ever think that his family and friends could be reading this stuff?

Tell me the last 4 star guy we got, let alone one that couldn't stick at the JC level. Please just stop before you dig a bigger hole.

You're right Olds, I don't talk to the coaches, but I do sit in on practices. If the coaches are talking about Redshirting the kid then that's going to be a major surprise to a lot of people. In fact, my guess is he would be gone. The practices that I've attended he looked very good. I know you're high on Hajek, but I've not seen him be able to handle Braxton in any of the practices.

I do disagree with your synopsis of the ratings. It's not correct, in fact it's not even close.

Personally, I don't think Olds is trashing on Braxton in the slightest. He is merely stating his opinion on what he feels might be the best option for Zach. We ALL know that Braxton was a major get and are extremely happy that he is here in Ogden. But, the fact of the matter is that there are other players who have spent time in the program and understand what needs to be done to play at this level. I watched 1 rat ball game in June and I was fairly impressed with Zach. He has great moves. Yes, he was a bit out of shape, but he didn't know what was fully expected of him till he got here. He found out in a hurry and has come back in far better shape and is ready to compete. That is a trait that really impresses me. He was asked to do something and he did it.

I haven't watched a lot of practices since school has started, but the ones I have seen, I was really impressed with Hajek. He knows this is it and he wants to go out on top. He was moving great and was a beast. I also was highly impressed with Coston. He doesn't know the system and was moving with great confidence. Granted, I only saw a few mins of practice, but it was fun to watch the guys.

Its ok to state your opinion and it also makes for great conversation, but its another to use a coach as your source. We all like to believe we have an "in" with the coaches, but I'm confident that not one of our coaches will provide inside information on a player.

Longevity is huge in a program, but talent will win out over time. I'm confident that Coach Rahe and his staff will do what it takes to win. Braxton might end up getting redshirted, but that will be a conversation with Coach Rahe, the player, and the players family. Coach Rahe would never publicly discuss redshirting a player without first talking to the player and all involved. I'm also confident that he wouldn't do that before practice even started.

Its going to be a great season.

Braxton is going to be a great player for us in the long run. It may take him a little while to get ready for that. It often does with big men. Tres struggled mightily his freshman year and could have really used a red shirt year. At the time, we just didn't have anyone else.

Years ago we got a kid out of Detroit named Gilson. He was a four star guy who was supposed to come in and revolutionize the BSC. He couldn't even carry water for our guys. What a waist of a grant. Before that we had a 6'9'' kid out of Colorado who was the top player in the state at that time. He was highly rated and supposed to be an instant success. I don't think they had star ratings at that time. However, he was highly recruited and thought to be a sure starter. He sat the bench for four years. He just couldn't figure things out.

Braxton is way better than either of those two and at this point in his career he is better than Tres was. Honestly, I hope he can win one of those top three spots. However, if he does not, then I don't see what good could come of waisting a full year of eligibility for a limited role. That is all I am saying. :twocents:

:thefan: BS ALERT!!!!!!!!

Oldrunner
You are wrong on so many levels. Russell Gilson was from Fremont High School in LA. Even though recruiting has changed drastically since 1985, I highly doubt Gilson was even close to a 4 star guy. Larry Farmer recruited the LA area hard. Gilson was the third player he signed from LA during that signing period. (Jason Trask & John Waikle) were the others. Some articles show him as 6-7 others have him at 6-5. As a junior he averaged 12 points 9 rebounds. As a senior he made second team all region for 4-A. Not state or city but region. His team was picked to finish 9th out of 10 teams in his region. Your right in the fact that he never played a minute at Weber and I can't even find him on the roster.

Braxton was a much more highly regarded player in High School than Gilson. Google can really helpful in the finding and calling out your BS.

Here is all the information you could want to know about Russ Gilson the famed 4 star recruit from Fremont High School.
