2014 Starting 5

Tal maybe this will make you a little happier about Hill. Today's games and the day before Hill played all 3. He looked good today from what I could tell but the good sign in all of it is that he is playing some 3 spot in their team works. If they keep doing that he will get more and more comfortable with what is the position he wants to play and what I think could be is natural spot if he keeps working hard at it. Only time and work will tell.

Instead of thinking of it as 1,2,3,4, & 5, it might be easier to think of it this way, a point, two wings, and two post players. The reason coaches break it into individual positions is to define roles in each play and rules for defending. However, as a spectator, the roles of the post players are mostly the same. The same goes for the wing players.

That is exactly how Randy sees it. 4s and 5s are used exactly the same in his sets. 2s and 3s are almost the same as well. Over the years that he has been coach, Randy has added plays to highlight the skills of the team and modified plays for individuals who have special skills. However, the basic concepts have remained the same.

If Randy makes changes, I believe they will be subtle.

Olds, Sounds like Coach Rahe sends you an update every morning on his strategy!!!! :willybs: Coach is as tight lipped as they come. Its comical for you to post on this forum that he's giving you insight into line ups and strategy and then you post it on the forum. In your last post you used his name 3 times. If your insight has so much credibility why do you have to use Coach Rahe for validation?

Your insight is actually pretty good.... loses credibility when you try to back it up with "Randy says"!

Right, the difference being defensively, so I guess all the 4-5 discussion should really be based on their defensive capabilities vs the 4's and 5's of the league.

I have taken a lot of heat for sharing insight that I may have received from those inside the program. I have tried to keep it quite general and not share the specifics. I will try to never share it in the future. Most of what I post is strictly off of observation over many years of following WSU basketball and having coached a little in youth basketball; having some players go on to play at the university level. I've been with and around the WSU program since Dick Mota's time. I've always been a student of the game. I love the game and I love WSU.

I will try hard to be less controversial in my comments. :thumb: :thumb:

Ah, olds we love ya, don't let youngguns with a whopping two posts rile you up.

Unfortunately Olds, I feel the exact same way as you. I remember coming on here and posting things that were told to me directly from the coaches and then I would take a beating for it. So i decided screw it. I will NEVER post anything on here that came from coaches, or any other staff or employee of WSU. :twocents:

I get it! everyone wants to show that they're in the know and have contacts within the staff that others might not enjoy. If one of us is posting things that we might of heard from a coach and the player or his family hasn't heard the same thing, that causes a lot of issues within the program.

Olds isn't saying that these things are being considered, he's saying this is what Coach Rahe has stated he's going to do. if you have inside information just state that this is what you think is going to happen..... don't say this is what Coach Rahe told me. I don't think that's fair to Coach Rahe, unless he told you its ok to share on the internet!!!

Olds is awesome and one of the reasons I like to follow the forum, but I think he would still be great without attributing all of his comments to Coach! His opinions should be able to stand on its own...... didn't Olds coach church league ball?

Wow!! Such anger towards Olds. Incredulous!! Frankly, unless some of you posters are family members of the players, which I wouldn't doubt (automatic bias), Olds has the closest connection to the staff and does share quite a bit of valuable information. Yes, I appreciate it, but since it is a fans forum, I take it at the face value (posts on a forum), but still like hearing it. His logic isn't misguided. A college freshman rarely is in a position to play automatically. The college game is far quicker, tougher, and better than anything our freshman have seen before. Rahe's system is not easy. His system is one of the toughest in DI basketball to learn. And, finally there is a huge difference from a fifth year senior and new freshman. Experience, size, and speed hugely affect a players ability to contribute.

Anyway, with that being said. I had the chance to watch some this week. I have changed my mind. I think our starting 5 should be:

Senglin
Golden
Hill (you are right 3Wildcats) Kyndahl has really improved his game. Exciting stuff!!
Bolomboy
Hajek

Gittens is a great 6th man. Coston isn't the best player, but is tough and strong. Rebounder!! To me Richardson is the best new freshman we have on the team. He needs to gain some serious weight, but has a great shot. Hayden Hunter is a defensive guy who has solid basketball IQ. Jefferson was a bit off, but you can see he has a lot of potential. He needs to work really hard to get some size on him. Van Pelt, you can tell, has just gotten back from a mission and Braxton is solid. But he isn't our best big right now. He has sick moves.

If Hill can play the 3 that will really open up the options for rotations/combos. This would allow Weber to go BIG or go small, much easier. Think about the dominance on the glass with Hajek, Bolomboy, and Hill on the floor at the same time. I like the idea of Gittens off the bench. In the end, it doesn't matter as much who starts, as who is on the floor at the end.

Wow Tal that is a change for you, Kyndahl must have played really well while you were in the gym watching. It would be great if he could move into that 3 spot because it would definitely open up some major options for Coach Rahe like some one else said. I think it benefits Zach more than just about anyone else if it happens.

I know that when I was in the gym this week he looked good playing the 3. We all know that is the position Hill wants to play and coaches have been working hard with him to get him there. Tal if you are feeling that way about it that could be great news for the Wildcats.

No way, Gittens is a starter! Nothing wrong with 4 guys on the floor who can shoot the ball. Braxton can work his way into playing time like Bolomboy his Freshman year. 10-12 min a game to relieve Bolomboy. Especially at the 5, he's not going to come in and demand starter minutes as a Freshman Center. IF Hill plays some 3, no problem with that either if Gittens is not on the floor.

Surprised that you don't see Gittens as a starter! He's worked on his shot and is a tremendous athlete. He might be our best pure athlete and an excellent defender! I thought he showed up in the Arizona game.

I'd play big, and switch to 100% zone D. Automatic sweet 16!

1 - Gittens
2 - Hill
3 - Bolomboy
4 - Braxton
5 - Hajek

:tothehand: You're crazy if you don't have Senglin at the 1.

Olds, just a reminder that this is a sports message board. We all hide behind monikers, no one knows who we really are, or what we actually know. Credibility is built over time and there is coming and going of new names, opinions and some just straight rumor mongering. As readers, it is up to us to sort through everything and decide who is "in the know" and who is just guessing (the guys that are straight wacky aren't as difficult to decipher). That's what makes it fun. So just a couple of comments:

#1) You have HUGE credibility on this board. You've been here a long time and we want to hear what you think and why you think it. Don't back off from that, please. If some newby, doesn't get that, if they know anything about WSU basketball, they will soon find out. You've firmly established your reputation!

#2) The more the merrier. Don't worry about somebody who attacks your position. Because of their anonymity, some posters get a kick out of seeing how others react. That can be annoying, but it also causes more discussion. I, for one, am happy to see some new names cropping up on this board and more discussion about players and coaches. It's the reason I come here occasionally. A growing board is a good board, and I'm glad to see this one growing.

Hope that helps you some. I always look forward to your posts and would hate to see you tone anything down because a couple of the newer posters don't get you yet.

My first thought was..."Uh, Crazy", but I do see the strength in this setup. I'd have Senglin at the 1, but, and playing a zone, this group would be intense. Coach, though, would never play a zone. What about Offense though?
