2015 Recruiting - 18 Verbals - Updated 2/3

QB Kavika Johnson** 6' 200 Las Cruces, NM (UNM, NMSU, UTEP, Army)

This is the next big thing at QB I've been told. He did cancel a trip or two after attending the EWU official last weekend. VA, Coach Hill, and Coach Baldwin spent alot of time with him. He has 9 offers I've been told. One of his cancelled trips was Wyoming.

I'd say he fits our scheme well in terms of his eyes are always upfield, he has superior movement, and is elusive under pressure. Best of all though he has a ROCKET ARM!

HUDL doesn't give all the data to make qualitative decisions on athletes in all aspects. Superior athlete in New Mexico. Always good to see how QB's react to negative plays, general leadership, how they make their teammates better, etc. Based on what is available, my stack rank has him #2. Will save the Kalm-esque diatribe, ya'll are welcome to stack 'em up anyway you like.

Found this on UTEP recruiting. Cole Ford and Kavika on it.

Another note, is Simba Webster going to be on the team this year? Believe he was slated for D, but he was a very talented signal caller in HS.

50 secs in. braylin scott catch... he visited last weekend. no commit to date.

Good looking athlete, think I would rather see Nolan Henry sign after watching HUDL's. Further along as a QB IMO.

Henry is an interesting prospect, although I'm not sure he still has an EWU offer. Not sure where he will end up.

Also not sure I agree with you on Kavika Johnson. He looks like a slightly taller version of VA to me. Not saying he will be, but he looks like a very dynamic QB who could thrive under Baldwin and Hill.

Yes, both Webster brothers are at EWU. I don't see Simba Webster playing QB. He's even smaller than VA.

Link? His twitter page still has a picture of him on the Inferno. Not saying that means anything, but...

Henry looks like the kind who again ends up at an academy or ivy league. Doesn't hurt he was the HS Heisman winner this past season, looks good in the pocket, throws the ball accurately and on time, good mechanics and arm and mobile; just looks more complete/mature to me. Opinion based on limited HUDL video.

Agreed. I will be interested in seeing where he ends up.

I hope the news on Kavika Johnson isn't true. He's undoubtedly our #1 QB target in this class. I'm not even sure who else we're recruiting at that position.

You can scratch Nathan Jacobson off of the verbal list. He's flipped to UNLV. Looks like Tristen Taylor also may flip to UNLV. That's two Offensive Linemen in the same weekend.

Good luck to him. Too bad, but if it was between a partial at Eastern and a full scholarship at UNLV can't say I blame him. Hopefully Taylor doesn't flip as well. Per his twitter he's visiting UNLV this weekend.

I could be wrong, but was left with the impression that it was Eastern or Uconn. Dad is a college coach, and was suggesting Eastern was the best fit and encouraged him to look hard at EWU. He had a great time on his trip and was all smiles. The right people were around him and if he chooses to go elsewhere it's not because we didn't offer him a great trip or situation. It was obvious to everyone that both QB Johnson and WR B. Scott were high priorities for the staff.

this seems like a low number of verbals for this time of the year but maybe we don't have a lot of schollies to give out this year. Of the 20 or so Seniors from 2014 Im not sure how many were scholarship plays and how many were walkons. did a quick twitter search on some of the players on the list and it looked to me like the WR Jayson Williams kid is headed to Missoula.

My guess is we don't have a ton of scholarships this year, and of course, this list is just a guesstimation and nothing official. There will be other verbals that we don't know about yet (hopefully Kavika Johnson and Braylin Scott). :D

Also, remember that we signed 26 players last NLI day, and 3 of those players greyshirted this year (Bekkering, Sarte, and Webster). That's three scholarships that won't be used this recruiting class, so to make things simple you could just think of it as having 17 in this recruiting class so far.

Wow that is too bad. El Paso/Cuidad Juarez Mexico is the drug smuggling and murder capital of North America. Bad environment!
