2018 Offers & Commitments

Like every other Wildcat fan, I'm sure hopeful of another historic season and believe Hill has quickly built a very good program with depth and all. However, it's rare to replace a QB that meant as much to his team's success and not miss a beat. Cantwell wasn't a lot of things but he was an exceptional decision maker, with enough skill in other aspects to guide that team to the success they had. Knowing the defense is more questionable is problematic since the strength of the D provided an opportunity in most games. I'll be pleasantly shocked if Weber duplicates last year's success.

This. Cantwell made very few mistakes. And he fought for every inch.

I agree. Without Cantwell playing last season Weber would have been a .500 team at best. We all saw what happened when he went out. His age, maturity, and experience made him unbelievably stable and an excellent decision maker. If there is a concern with the QBs it's that some of them will be young and inexperienced, something Cantwell definitely wasn't. It will help that we should have a solid running game. But don't forget, we were all concerned about the QB going into last season. Things will work out just fine, I believe. That's what usually happens when you have good coaches. And I'm starting to sound like the ever optimistic oldrunner.

What should really worry you is that you are starting to sound like me a bit.

I'm pretty confident in the talent that will be competing for the starting gig. I thoroughly feel that the Cats have improved their situation at this position. Cantwell is a hard act to follow, but we do have a new OC and, with that, possibly a new system. Cantwell was perfect for what Fesi had, but who knows about this year.

I loved what Cantwell did for us last year and I agree that his competitiveness and leadership are the intangibles that are hard to replace. I just feel that there are more talented guys coming up and I certainly hope that one of them has those intangible things as well. You hope that leadership comes from your quarterback, but it can come from other positions as well. RBs are often the heart and soul of a football team and we have a stable of good ones. Coaches are huge in that whole leadership thing. Not just being in charge, but empowering the leadership in their players. None of us really know our new OC. However, from his resume, I assume he has the qualities to be a success. We already know what Hill brings to the table and the kind of people he hires as assistants. Whoever wins the QB position, they will deserve it and I have full confidence that they will be successful. :coffee:

Cooley ranked top Big Sky recruit

Good find. This the little write up they had on him being #2 nationally.

"
NO. 2 - DEVON COOLEY, WR, WEBER STATE
HGT/WGT: 6-1/165
HOMETOWN: Bellflower, Calif.
THE SKINNY: Cooley was a 4-star receiver heading to UCLA last fall, but he and the Bruins parted ways and he also was dropped to a 3-star prospect. The Wildcats are the beneficiary.
COOLEY TOLD HERO SPORTS: "I just want to make a name for myself, I’ll continue to work hard, grind, until my name is written in stone," Cooley told HERO Sports this week. "I’m grateful to be going to Weber St. University. The whole coaching staff is great. The players they’re producing are grinders and I cannot wait to contribute to some great years. It’ll be something to remember. Weber is the best and we’ll be proving my opinion correct over the years. "

One very important characteristic about leadership is ones ability to make those around themselves perform at a higher level as well.
From Coach Hill down to the last bench warmer, I believe that the Weber State Football Program has elevated its game immensely. And the Great Great Great news is...it's getting better each year. I've been attending football games for 54 yrs and I have never been more excited.
Ain't it a great time to be a Wildcat?

I noticed the MSU had a nice recruiting class, as did EWU, and to a lesser extent Davis and Sac.

I wouldn't trade our recruiting class for anybody else's, that's for sure. I think that everyone of our guys has a real chance to do some special things for our program. :thumb: :thumb:
