If you go to the search function on Rivals.com you can type any of our current players or prospects and you can see if they are "star" rated. Star rating can be tricky though. It's very dependent on which camps and show cases they attend and also how much hype surrounds the player. There's quite a few actual 4 star players that don't even show up on Rivals. Mainly because of school location or access to camps, 7v7, Under Armour or Nike showcases, ect.
I only take star ratings with a grain of salt and there's been high rated HS players that have turned out to be flops once they get to college. It's tough for a coach and recruiting. Basically, you have the tape (only highlights successes), grades, hype and a good in home visit.
I had a coach once tell me during an in home visit of a player he really wanted. The whole time he was there the recruit was watching a basketball game and the mother basically answered every question that was directed toward the player. No questions from the family about how their son could benefit the team, only what the school would do for the recruit. Coach leaves the house and 5 min later his offer is pulled. Home visits go a very long way.
