QB Randall Johnson. Middle Tennesee St, transfer portal

6'5" dual threat, would have two years to play. Played 2 seasons at JC ("Played two seasons at Reedley College (CA), earning Golden Coast Conference Player of the Year in 2018; passed for 2,832 yards, 28 TDs and rushed for 797 yards, 14 TDs") before transferring to Middle Tennessee St prior to last season. Redshirted last season. Is also reporting an offer from Mississippi Valley St.

With two years to play, I feel like he has the potential to be something special for our team. He seems to have the arm strength, fundamentals and speed to get us to where we all want to be. This team seems to be coming together well. Now, let's get through this pandemic and back to some semblance of normal. :coffee:

I like the highlights and the stats show a duel threat. Looks like he can throw a deep ball, too. Combine this QB and an improved offensive line, and I think the team is looking in great shape!

Now just hope the season can be played. It will be nice to see an offense that can help out the D and put teams away and move the ball consistently.

Looks like he has all the tools to be a great QB. I’m curious why he’s leaving Middle Tennessee after just one year of course but it’s exciting watching his film. He gets the ball downfield with ease, moves around in the pocket well, and looks very smooth running the read option. He could take our offense to the next level.

He saw very limited action in just one game and was 3rd on the depth chart behind two underclassman. And the team wasn't very good. He'd be starting this season as the 3rd option again. I'm sure that's why he's transferring, and it's why I'm trying to temper my expectations. Still, if you look at what he did in his last full season of playing, even if it was at the JUCO level, I'm excited about the possibilities. By subtracting Constantine and Schramm, adding Johnson and Barron, and getting a healthier Jenks, I'm more hopeful for the QB play. If nothing else, QB mobility and arm strength has greatly improved.

Whether Randall is the second coming of Jamie Martin or is a solid backup QB for Weber remains to be seen. His highlights from his sophomore year at Reedley look good. His stats from his freshman year look less good. But I am optimistic that he will provide a different look for the Wildcats at QB. He looks like he is big, mobile, and can throw the deep ball. The key will be not turning the ball over and making the defense play Weber more honest against the pass. He needs to get to Ogden and learn whatever offense Hammer is putting together.

I still think we will have a tight QB competition in fall camp, but having more talent to work with will help the entire team. A rising tide raises all boats. Regardless of who wins the job, If the QB can provide a spark to the offense, Weber could be real good.

He’s got his work cut out for sure. It’s never easy for a QB to show up in mid-June and win the starting job.

But all I can think about is that Josh Davis could set some records with a QB like Johnson in the backfield next to him. The running game would be lethal with a mobile 6’5” QB added to the mix.

Imagine our goal line package with Johnson and Kris Jackson

Very good point. The red zone offense was where a lot of drives stalled last year. Constantine’s immobility allowed the defense able to sit back and play the pass coverage more. With a mobile QB who can also zip the ball in there, combined with the running game options, I’m excited to see some improvements.

Hopefully Hammer will utilize some play action, misdirection, and bootlegs. It sure opens up the playbook!

I feel confident that we have the horses at QB to make the competition interesting and the winner of that competition will have earned the spot. The spot is wide open.

I also feel confident that we have brought in the needed O linemen to be a much more potent attack. Our stable of RBs and WRs was already outstanding.

On top of all that, our D could be just as good and maybe better in the secondary.

What do we expect out of a new offense? I don't expect huge changes, but I do expect a little less predictability. We will probably still see a 55/45 split for run/pass. Some games maybe 60/40.

TE Logan Strom.............Omaha/Cal Davis

Interesting signing. He's been on the basketball teams at UC Davis (2017-18) and then Omaha (2018-19). Doesn't look like he's played football since high school, although he had some D1 offers to play football coming out of high school. At 6'8", just added a ton of length with these two signings.
