2024 Outlook

The 2024 season kickoff is just a few weeks away as the Hornets look to embark on another season in pursuit of a 5th straight postseason appearance under 2nd year Head Coach Andy Thompson. The Hornets were picked 8th in the FCS in the Stats Perform preseason poll and picked to finish 5th in the BSC in the coaches and media poll.

Offensively the Hornets return a lot of key components from last season’s playoff run. At the helm will be quarterbacks Kaiden Bennett and Carson Conklin. It remains to be seen how Associate Head Coach Bobby Fresquez will split time between the two, but it is expected that both will be on the field very often. There are many talented targets that these quarterbacks will throw the ball to. At wide receiver the Hornets have a mix of returning players and incoming transfers to power the passing game in Jared Gipson (All-BSC), Anderson Grover, Devin Gandy, and incoming transfer Makai Cope. Coleman Kuntz (All-BSC) returns at tight end along with incoming transfer Jay Rudolph.

On the offensive line, the Hornets return 3 starters, including guard Jackson Slater (FCS All-American, All-BSC, center Nathan Mejia (All-BSC), and tackle Aiden Meek with some experienced players looking to earn a starting role. In the backfield, the Hornets return running backs Elijah Tau-Tolliver and Ezra Moleni.

The Hornet offense has the experience and talent to be more than capable of moving the ball and putting up points. The key thing to watch this season will be how Coach Fresquez handles the quarterback workload/rotation and if he can put together a game plan that is capable of putting this team in a position to win in the big games.

The Hornet defense will have a lot of starting roles to plug this season, fortunately there are a lot of returners with experience that will be vying for those openings. Transfer linebacker Will Leota (all-BSC) was brought in to shore up the defense. Oge Feo is the other returning linebacker with the most significant playtime at this position. The defensive line will see all new starters this season with Brandon Knott, Xavier Williams, and Mason Brousseau seeing a lot of action in the interior last season. Ben Ahio and Josh Cashiola saw significant action last season at defensive end.

In the Hornet secondary, nickelback Gavin Davis-Smith is the lone returning starter but a handful of players saw action last season as well as players returning from injury and incoming transfers. Safeties Eian Moore and Davion Ross will be in the mix after missing all of last season with injury along with transfer Murvin Kennion III and Anta’Veon McKenzie who saw significant action late in season last year. At cornerback, Zelmar Vedder, Patrick Dean, and DJ Houston saw action last season at cornerback and newcomer Phoenix Rose being a highly touted recruit.

Lots to watch for on this side of the ball as the question is who will step up and make their presence known. Not a lot of starters return but a lot of players who notched a lot of minutes will be stepping into starting roles. The defensive philosophy has been a “bend but don’t break style” under Thompson and I don’t think that will change this season.

Special teams returns all the specialists this season. Punter Cal McGough, kickers Zach Schreiner and Evan Kiely, and long snapper AJ Campos are looking to continue building off of a solid performance a year ago. Another solid season from the specialists should be expected.

The 2024 schedule features a 12 game slate with only 5 of them coming in Hornet Stadium and 4 of the first 5 on the road. The Hornets open with back to back FBS games which will be a physically challenging start. The bye week is well positioned after the road heavy first half of the season. The final month of the season features the Hornets only leaving California once with the final regular season game being the Causeway in Hornet Stadium.

This Hornet program has proven its strength and resolve over the past 5 years that every game on the schedule is winnable and anything less than 8 wins and a playoff appearance is failure. There are only a few games in which I wavered on picking a Hornet win (SJSU, FSU, MSU) but as we saw last year, the Hornets cannot afford to overlook anyone on the schedule.

My prediction is 10-2 (7-1 BSC) in route to a share of a BSC title and a berth in the playoffs.

Thanks, SD... Looks like we need a bigger stadium!
I'd settle for permanent bathrooms and concessions.

Also I'm revising my win total above. I looked at SJSU last night and I thought they would have a bit more coming back from their prior season, they don't. I'm changing that to a dub. 10-2 (7-1 BSC) is my preseason prediction.

Here’s my week by week breakdown. Last season’s record is listed. I attempted to look into who added what via the portal. Enjoy.

Week 1 - Aug 29 - at San Jose State - Win

San Jose State (7-6, 6-2 MWC) will look to build off of a respectable season that featured a 6 game win streak to end the regular season. Unfortunately, with that success former Head Coach Brent Brennan was hired away following their Hawaii Bowl loss. The Spartans will be moving forward under experienced Head Coach Ken Niumatalolo and are picked to finish 10th in the Mountain West.

The Spartans had a wild portal ride in the offseason. At QB, 5 players will be battling for the starting role, 3 of whom came from other FBS programs. All of their offensive production from a season ago is no longer on the roster with the exception of their top WR. SJSU does return 2 starting OL from an offense that excelled at running the ball.

Defensively, SJSU returns 2 of their top 7 tacklers from a season ago and only 3 starters. Of their 3-4 defense, 2 starting LBs and a starting CB return. On special teams they have an experienced K returning.

Notable returners/transfers:
  • WR Nick Nash: 48 rec, 728 yds, 8 TD
  • WR Malikhi Miller: 24 rec, 290 yds, 1 TD
  • LB Jordan Pollard: 79 tak, 4 TFL, 2 INT
  • LB Taniela Latu: 44 tak, 5 TFL
  • CB Michael Dansby: 15 tak, 1 TFL, 1 INT
  • K Kyler Halvorsen: 10/15 FG, 54/55 PAT

Week 2 - Sep 7 - at Fresno State - Loss

Fresno State (9-4, 4-4 MWC) is coming into this season off of a New Mexico Bowl win and will have Coach Tim Skipper at the helm following the resignation of Coach Jeff Tedford due to health reasons. The Bulldogs were in the midst of a special season until it all fell apart in the final month of the regular season. FSU is picked to finish 3rd in the Mountain West.

The Bulldogs are stacked on offense and this is shaping up to be a special season for them. With the exception of their top WR, all of their skilled starters return as well as 4 starters on the OL. This offense should be scary good this season.

Defensively, FSU returns 6 of their top 8 tacklers from a season ago including at LB, S, CB, DE and DT from their 4-2-5 defense. On special teams they return their K.

Notable returners/transfers:
  • QB Mikey Keene: 283/422, 2976 yds, 24 TD, 10 INT
  • RB Malik Sherrod: 172 car, 966 yds, 9 TD, 44 rec, 260 yds, 1 TD
  • RB Elijah Gilliam: 95 car, 397 yds, 5 TD, 11 rec, 120 yds, 1 TD
  • WR Chedon James: 102 rec, 1045 yds, 8 TD
  • WR Jalen Moss: 55 rec, 706 yds, 6 TD
  • WR Mac Dalena: 47 rec, 509 yds, 3 TD
  • LB Malachi Langley: 84 tak, 5 TFL, 1 sac
  • S Dean Clark: 83 tak, 1 TFL, 3 INT
  • DE Devo Bridges: 51 tak, 8 TFL, 3.5 sac, 1 INT
  • DB Camryn Bracha: 38 tak, 3 TFL, 1.5 sac
  • CB Al’zillion Hamilton: 31 tak, 2 INT
  • K Dylan Lynch: 24/30 FG, 40/40 PAT

Week 3 - Sep 14 - vs Nicholls State - Win

Nicholls State (6-5, 7-0 Southland) will make the return trip of the home and home looking for revenge from last season's opening game loss to the Hornets. In preseason polls, the defending Southland Champions are picked to repeat under Head Coach Tim Rebowe.

The Colonels offense returns starters at QB, RB, WR TE, and 4 on the OL. NSU did lose their top 2 WRs from last season but have a complementary duo at RB behind an experienced front.

On defense, NSU returns almost every starter, including 5 of their top 8 tacklers. The Colonels return 2 DE, NT, 3 LB, CB, 2 S starters from their 4-3 defense. On special teams, NSU returns their P.

Notable returners/transfers:
  • QB Pat McQuaide: 180/318, 2196 yds, 13 TD, 12 INT
  • RB Collin Guggenheim: 178 car, 833 yds, 11 TD, 8 rec, 56 yds
  • RB Jaylon Spears: 115 car, 753 yds, 6 TD, 16 rec, 260 yds, 3 TD
  • WR Quincy Brown: 29 rec, 301 yds, 2 TD
  • TE Lee Negrotto: 14 rec, 143 yds, 1 TD
  • S Ethan Lee: 64 tak, 0.5 TFL, 1 INT
  • S Tyler Morton: 63 tak, 4 TFL, 4 INT
  • LB Quinton Sharkey: 51 tak, 4 TFL, 1 sac, 3 INT
  • LB Hayden Shaheen: 50 tak, 5 TFL, 2 sac
  • LB Eli Ennis: 44 tak, 5 TFL, 1 sac
  • DE Joe Mason: 36 tak, 8 TFL, 6.5 sac

Week 4 - Sep 21 - at Texas A&M-Commerce - Win

Texas A&M-Commerce (1-9, 1-5 Southland) enters their 3rd season of FCS football and 2nd under Head Coach Clint Dolezel looking for signs of life following a dreadful season a year ago. The Lions are picked to finish 9th in the Southland Conference.

The Lions look like another hot mess this season. I had a hard time digging for returning offensive players with meaningful stats. TAMCC returns starters at WR and 4 on the OL. The Lions defense doesn’t appear to be in much better shape. 2 of their top 7 tacklers return with starters at NT, 2 DE, LB, FS, 2 CB returning. On special teams, TAMCC returns their P and LS.

Notable returners/transfers:
  • RB Jordon Hamilton: 20 car, 93 yds, 1 TD
  • TE Preston Kilgore: 6 rec, 90 yds
  • FS Max Epps: 48 tak, 4 INT
  • LB Jaheim Lowe: 40 tak, 2 TFL, 0.5 sac
  • DE Clifford Funderburk: 21 tak, 5.5 TFL, 5 sac

Week 5 - Sep 28 - at Northern Arizona - Win

Northern Arizona (5-6, 5-3 BSC) hit the reset button following last season and begin the Head Coach Brian Wright era this season. The Lumberjacks are picked to finish 7th by the coaches in the Big Sky.

NAU’s offense returns 2 of their top 7 top receiving producers in the passing game. The Jacks have 1 WR, 1 TE and 2 OL starters returning. Defensively, the Jacks return starters at 1 DE, 1 DT, and 2 S, and have their top 2 tacklers back as well. On special teams, NAU returns their LS.

Notable returners/transfers:
  • QB Angel Flores: 52/71, 634 yds, 5 TD, 3 INT, 84 car, 337 yds, 8 TD
  • WR BJ Fleming: 16 rec, 333 yds, 1 TD
  • TE Bryzai White: 16 rec, 127 yds, 2 TD
  • S Alex McLaughlin: 71 tak, 5 TFL, 1.5 sac, 4 INT
  • LB Tommy Ellis: 64 tak, 2.5 TFL, 0.5 sac, 1 INT
  • S Zach Lewis: 47 tak, 1 INT
  • DT Daniel Robledo: 23 tak, 4.5 TFL, 3 sac

Week 6 - Oct 5 - Bye

Week 7 - Oct 12 - vs Eastern Washington - Win

Eastern Washington (4-7, 3-5 BSC) is looking to rebound from a rough season under 7th year Head Coach Aaron Best. The Eagles are picked to finish 8th by the coaches in the Big Sky.

EWU returns most of their playmakers from last season and are poised to be a top offense in the BSC. The Eagles return starters at QB, RB, 2 WR, and 4 OL. On the other side of the ball, EWU lost their top 3 tacklers. The Eagles return starters at DE, 2 DT, LB, CB, 2 S. On special teams, the Eagles return their K and LS.

Notable returners/transfers:
  • QB Kekoa Visperas: 250/379, 2754 yds, 19 TD, 10 INT, 82 car, 203 yds, 1 TD
  • RB Tuna Altahir: 125 car, 534 yds, 6 TD, 16 rec, 143 yds, 2 TD
  • WR Efton Chism III: 84 rec, 932 yds, 8 TD
  • WR Nolan Olm: 45 rec, 564 yds, 4 TD
  • LB Adam Cohen: 52 tak
  • S Kentrell Williams Jr: 45 tak, 3.5 TFL
  • DT Matthew Brown: 36 tak, 6 TFL, 3 sac
  • K Soren McKee: 11/17 FG, 41/41 PAT

Week 8 - Oct 19 - vs Weber State - Win

Weber State (6-5, 4-4 BSC) are coming into this season looking to build on a successful opening campaign under 2nd year Head Coach Mickey Mental. The Wildcats are picked to finish 6th by the coaches in the Big Sky.

On offense, the Wildcats return starters at QB, WR, and 1 OL. While WSU has a lot of starting roles to fill, they have a solid QB to build around. On the other side of the ball, the Wildcats return starters at 2 DE, 2 DT and LB and only 2 of their top 7 tacklers. At specialist, the Wildcats return their K and LS.

Notable returners/transfers:
  • QB Richie Munoz: 90/147, 1054 yds, 10 TD, 1 INT, 30 car, 93 yds, 1 TD
  • RB Damon Bankston: 64 car, 388 yds, 5 TD

  • LB Garrett Beck: 52 tak, 3 TFL, 1.5 sac, 1 INT
  • DE Brayden Wilson: 52 tak, 16.5 TFL, 7.5 sac
  • DT Easton Payne: 28 tak, 4 TFL
  • DT Matt Herron: 22 tak, 5.5 TFL, 3 sac
  • K Kyle Thompson: 13/19 FG, 32/32 PAT

Week 9 - Oct 26 - at Idaho State - Win

Idaho State (3-8, 3-5 BSC) will look to continue their upward trajectory under 2nd year Head Coach Cody Hawkins. The Bengals were picked to finish 10th by the coaches in the Big Sky.

Offensively, the Bengals return some key players from a young team last season, but lost their top WR to the portal. They return starters at QB, 2 WRs, and 2 OL. Defensively, ISU returns their top 5 tackers and starters at 3 DL, 2 LB, 2 S, and 2 CBs. The Bengals special teams will be replacing both kickers with the lone returner at LS.

Notable returners/transfers:
  • QB Jordan Cooke: 209/355, 2453 yds, 12 TD, 13 INT
  • QB Hunter Hays: 89/141, 882 yds, 9 TD, 5 INT, 60 car, 233 yds, 5 TD

  • WR Alfred Jordan Jr: 44 rec, 479 yds, 3 TD
  • S Calvin Pitcher: 87 tak, 3 TFL, 1 INT
  • S Mason Young: 75 tak, 1.5 TFL, 1 sac, 1 INT
  • LB Kris Sanchez: 65 tak, 4 TFL, 1 INT
  • LB Taylor Tuioti: 55 tak, 0.5 TFL, 1 INT
  • CB Josh Alford: 51 tak, 2 TFL
  • DT David Rowe: 36 tak, 10 TFL, 4 sac

Week 10 - Nov 2 - vs Portland State - Win

Portland State (5-6, 4-4 BSC) is looking to finally get over the hump under 10th year Head Coach Bruce Barnum. The Vikings are picked to finish 9th in the Big Sky coaches poll.

The Vikings lost most of their offensive production but will return starters at QB, TE, and 2 OL. There are lots of starting positions in question for the PSU offense. On the defensive side, the Vikings return most of their starters. They return 2 DE, DT, LB, SS, FS, and CB including 5 of their top 6 tacklers. The Vikings do not have any experienced specialists returning.

Notable returners/transfers:
  • QB Dante Chachere: 143/231, 1573 yds, 16 TD, 7 INT, 113 car, 629 yds, 10 TD
  • RB Quincy Craig: 66 car, 410 yds, 3 TD, 19 rec, 207 yds, 3 TD
  • RB Christian Grubb: 53 car, 282 yds, 1 TD, 5 rec, 12 yds
  • LB Michael Montgomery: 69 tak, 3.5 TFL
  • SS Tyreese Shakir: 53 tak, 4 TFL, 1 INT

  • LB Jaymason Willingham: 36 tak, 5.5 TFL, 0.5 sac, 1 INT
  • CB Michael Jackson: 30 tak, 2.5 TFL, 1 sac, 1 INT
  • DE Slade Shufelt: 16 tak, 5 TFL, 3.5 sac

Week 11 - Nov 9 - at Montana State - Loss

Montana State (8-4, 6-2 BSC) is looking to avenge an early departure from the FCS playoffs last season and make another run at a Big Sky Championship. The Bobcats are picked to finish 2nd in the Big Sky under 4th year Head Coach Brent Vigen.

The Bobcats return starters at QB, 2 WR, RB, TE, and 3 OL including their leading passer, receiver, and rusher. The MSU offense should be just as formidable as they were a season ago. Defensively MSU returns 3 of their top 5 tacklers including starters at DE, DT, LB, 2 CB, 2 S. On special teams, MSU returns their K, P, and LS.

Notable returners/transfers:
  • QB Tommy Mellott: 73/117, 1064 yds, 10 TD, 2 INT, 85 car, 689 yds, 5 TD
  • RB Julius Davis: 104 car, 718 yds, 6 TD, 5 rec, 43 yds
  • RB Scottrie Humphrey: 55 car, 441 yds, 8 TD
  • WR Ty McCullouch: 25 rec, 473 yds, 5 TD

  • CB Jon Johnson: 32 tak, 0.5 TFL, 2 INT
  • K Brendan Hall: 6/12 FG, 38/41 PAT
  • K Casey Kautzman: 4/7 FG, 19/22 PAT

Week 12 - Nov 16 - at Cal Poly - Win

Cal Poly (3-8, 1-7 BSC) will be looking to make meaningful strides during the 2nd season under Head Coach Paul Wulff. His task will be difficult with the departure of the best pocket passer from the BSC during the offseason. The Mustangs are picked to finish 12th in the Big Sky by the coaches.

Offensively, Cal Poly returns a lot of their offensive production. If the Mustangs can find a QB, their offense should have some life. CP returns starters at RB, 2 WR, TE, and 2 OL. Defensively CP returns starters at DE, DT, NT, 2 LB, CB, 2 S and 5 of their top 6 tacklers from a unit that struggled to stop many opponents. On special teams the Mustangs return their K and P.

Notable returners/transfers:
  • RB Paul Holyfield: 63 car, 193 yds, 1 TD, 25 rec, 175 yds
  • RB Troy Fletcher: 47 car, 166 yds, 2 TD, 10 rec, 30 yds

  • DE Elijah Ponder: 52 tak, 13 TFL, 10 sac
  • S Brian Dukes Jr: 50 tak, 0.5 TFL
  • LB Ethan Calvert: 37 tak, 1 TFL, 1 sac
  • LB Je’kon Jones: 37 tak, 5 TFL
  • S Jamauri Jackson: 36 tak, 1.5 TFL
  • K Noah Serna: 7/10 FG, 25/28 PAT

Week 13 - Nov 23 - vs Causeway - Win

They (7-4, 5-3 BSC) are looking to make a playoff appearance after missing out the last 2 seasons. They’ll have one of the best RBs in FCS to carry the offense under first year Head Coach Tim Plough system. They were picked to finish 4th in the Big Sky by the coaches.

Offensively this is their make it or break it season as they return a stacked slate of seniors with almost all of their starters returning. Their returning starters on offense are at QB, RB, 3 WR, TE, and 4 OL. The story is similar on defense in that their key returners are seniors. They lost their top 2 tacklers, however 4 of their top 7 tacklers return. They picked up Cal Poly’s leading LB to shore up their defense as they return starters at DE, DT, LB, CB, FS, and SS. Their lone specialist that returns is at LS.

Notable returners/transfers:
  • QB Miles Hastings: 231/364, 3048 yds, 14 TD, 10 INT
  • RB Lan Larison: 178 car, 1101 yds, 13 TD, 21 rec, 198 yds, 2 TD

  • CB Kavir Bains: 43 tak, 0.5 TFL
  • DE Zach Kennedy: 28 tak, 8 TFL, 4 sac
  • K Isaiah Gomez: 19/25 FG, 33/34 PAT

Solid breakdown as always, SD. Thank you.

Question, though. How definite are you on those losses? Are you fairly certain, or just leaning in that direction? Personally, I think if we've got our QB issues from last year straightened out (and it certainly could have been a maturity thing that could be fixed with another year older and another year with the same coaching staff), it kinda sounds to me like we have the firepower to beat at least MSU, if not Fresno State. The closer we get to the season, the more I'm leaning toward an undefeated season, though I would agree with you that if we have two losses, it will be those two games in particular.

Certain? Nothing is certain besides death and taxes. There are some games that will be toss ups and my homerism and our recent success over the past few years weighed in on my picks. There are plenty of games that have me concerned. Ranked in most concerned to least:
  1. Fresno State
  2. Montana State
  3. Causeway
  4. San Jose State
  5. Northern Arizona
  6. Eastern Washington
  7. Weber State
  8. Idaho State
  9. Nicholls
  10. Portland State
  11. Cal Poly
  12. TAMU Commerce

It’s probably better to view the concerning games by groupings. The top 3 should be our most difficult of the year. Those teams will be difficult matchups for the Hornets given the talent those teams have coming back.

Games 4-9 should be wins if we take care of business, but certainly a loss can be had if the Hornets don’t execute. As mentioned in the win poll thread, there are concerns with travel that will play a factor. I’m not really sure what to think of SJSU, but between graduation and the portal, their roster took a beating. EWU and WSU will be tough, but having those in Hornet Stadium will help. Heading to NAU after the Commerce game will be a tough back to back roadie. Nicholls is no slouch given their experience but we get them in our place. Then there is a Pokey trip, and we all know weird things happen in that barn.

Games 10-12 should be wins unless this program/team totally implodes. PSU has a solid QB but needs to find playmakers around him. CP lost its stud QB to the portal and are essentially starting over again. Commerce is just a complete mess as that program looks to find its footing at the FCS level.

I have similar thoughts SD. The wrinkle I will add is that we would struggle to beat any FBS team after playing one the previous week. So if the games were reversed in order, I might take two losses. One thing that has been proven over and over in these FCS/FBS games is that the FCS team ends up with some lingering injuries.

We will play the entire season on Field Turf. Which also, to me, increases the changes of freak injuries in FCS/FBS games

Sting makes a VERY good point here. Players have been bringing blowback against artificial turf at every level since well before Aaron Rodgers blew out his Achilles, yet the powers-that-be give lip-service to player safety, but do nothing. They remind me of the Pirates Who Don't Do Anything. I don't think anything is going to happen until there's an NFL-level player revolt on this issue....

Good point. I wouldn't have us beating SJSU is we had them after Fresno. Speaking of Fresno, they are at Michigan the week prior to their game against us. If we can rise up to the moment in against Sparta, the following week could be interesting.

I think we have the chance to get both SJSU & FSU. SjSU after such turmoil is ripe to be knocked off,
FSU going to Michigan might have them coming back both beat up, out of synch and looking past SAC ST. It will be tough but possible.
FSU is loaded w talent though. If they have a great game and upset Michigan then we will have a tougher more spirited fight.
Montana St & Davis are the two conference games that we must be prepared for.
Hoping for 10-1 or 9-2 and a good seed in playoffs! This will be an exciting season.

My favorite part was “Title/Subtitle” at the :10 second mark

If you aren’t going to put effort behind your Big Sky content, don’t claim to cover it. Claim to cover Montana and Montana State.

Or maybe learn how to edit videos, you’ve only been doing this your whole adult life you stupid fuck

Imagine getting this mad at a simple editing mistake...

Thanks for watching the video. We have a brand new content producer who missed that slide, but I edited it out and updated it. Thanks for the help!

Also, thanks for the wonderful personal message as well. Your positivity is apparent.

Your video also had zero to do with this thread. We have a Jackson Slater preseason hype thread that is on the main page. Why would this belong in our outlook where we are discussing our record this year and potential pratfalls.

Thanks for your effort, Colter. You'll have to excuse our "Brand Ambassador" stingthemood. He's our keyboard warrior who goes on profanity laced tirades here and elsewhere in the Big Sky circles, and helps broadcast our values as a top tier football program. He's the embodiment of our program's values... integrity, respect, collaboration, teamwork, and innovation.

So you didn’t find it insulting that the feature on the Sac State guy was edited by a 10 year old and the Montana and Montana State ones had polish and were professionally done. Got it. Shows you are quite the brand ambassador yourself. Probably pining for Steve Mooshagian to come back from the JUCO ranks and lead us to the promised land.

We were having a great discussion until this hack posted a video that insulted our school and had nothing to do with the thread.

But I’ll let you choose Bodega. Would you rather have him on the board posting two deeps and notes from discussions with our staff, or a Montana fan boy who “tries” to be a journalist.

Completely your call
