Aaron Best it is

I wonder how much of a search was done if Chaves was always going to hire internally. Either way, Congrats Coach Best.

Obviously a great hire, credit to our AD for getting this done so quickly and for running a program where top flight assistant coaches like Aaron Best are available to take the next step. Credit to Coach Baldwin too of course for his mentorship of so many outstanding coaches. See you in Lubbock, ironic Coach Best begins his EWU head coaching career against Texas Tech just like Beau did in 2008.

Interested in knowing what kind of offense we're going to see from the new staff. Coach Best is an offensive line guy. Will we seem more emphasis on the running game or a wide open attack like we saw with CBB?

I think one of the goals was not only to maintain the kind of culture we have in the locker room, but the style of play we had on the field. I think we will continue to see a prolific offense from our Eagles!

We are replacing the entire offensive staff so a lot of it probably depends on who is brought in as OC. One thing is for sure, it will be different.

For me, this was probably the best hire that could have been made. I've been advocating for Best for a while now to be "the guy" whenever Baldwin left. He's an Eagle through and through and I think he'll work his ass off for the program. He's a new school thinker with an old school, nose to the grind mentality. The players have always loved him and he's been a major part of our successful offense for many years. This ensures some amount of continuity, although I'm sure he has some changes we'll see very shortly. This was a good transition; a quick decision to stay with the status quo while still getting new ideas at the top.

I don't know if I would agree. The offensive staff will change, but Best has been one of the offensive architects for the entirety of Baldwin's term. It ain't broken, so there isn't anything to fix. If I was going to speculate on formulaic changes, I'd guess we may take a few less risks and run a little more, but I don't think it's going to be much different.

Keep in mind, Best has been OC for a long time, so he'll still have his hands on the offense. He never called the plays though (which I've never felt is as critical to success as forging the offensive identity), so he'll bring someone in for that role. And let's be honest, if you were a young up-and-comer coach, why in the hell would you not take the Eastern offensive coordinator job? Everyone who's held a title on our offense has moved up the ranks quickly, so finding someone to jump into that role will be easy.

I'm still more concerned about the defensive side. Schmedding has that group trending upward, but one year of reasonable success could just be coincidental. There is still a lot of improvement needed on that side. And the one thing that always concerns me about an offense-based head coach is that sometimes the other side of the ball gets neglected to some degree.

Yes. There will inevitably be changes on offense due to the personnel turnover but I think it's important to note that Best was an understudy of Baldwin for many, many years. And while he is transitioning to the HC role now he will invariably have a lot of influence on what we do offensively.

Agreed. Whoever is brought in to be the OC will be a reflection of what Best wants to do on offense. Personally, I'd love to see Erik Meyer brought in as QB Coach/Passing game coordinator. He has the experience and I think he'd do a great job. The big question is whether he'd want to leave California to relocate back to the Spokane area.
