erik would be a great choice as QB coach if not OC. man, the suspense is killing me.

I'm sure everything is in the works. Excited to see what the new staff look like!

We are replacing the entire offensive staff so a lot of it probably depends on who is brought in as OC. One thing is for sure, it will be different.

I don't know if I would agree. The offensive staff will change, but Best has been one of the offensive architects for the entirety of Baldwin's term. It ain't broken, so there isn't anything to fix. If I was going to speculate on formulaic changes, I'd guess we may take a few less risks and run a little more, but I don't think it's going to be much different.

Keep in mind, Best has been OC for a long time, so he'll still have his hands on the offense. He never called the plays though (which I've never felt is as critical to success as forging the offensive identity), so he'll bring someone in for that role. And let's be honest, if you were a young up-and-comer coach, why in the hell would you not take the Eastern offensive coordinator job? Everyone who's held a title on our offense has moved up the ranks quickly, so finding someone to jump into that role will be easy.

I'm still more concerned about the defensive side. Schmedding has that group trending upward, but one year of reasonable success could just be coincidental. There is still a lot of improvement needed on that side. And the one thing that always concerns me about an offense-based head coach is that sometimes the other side of the ball gets neglected to some degree.

You could be right, but we saw how much just one coach could affect the offense in just one season with Coach Taylor. This is the entire offensive staff we're replacing minus Best.

There will be differences for sure but one would have to assume that the offensive philosophy will remain the same. Let 'er rip, baby.

Interested in knowing what kind of offense we're going to see from the new staff. Coach Best is an offensive line guy. Will we seem more emphasis on the running game or a wide open attack like we saw with CBB?

Both, hopefully. I personally love our offense but also feel like we need to get back to the tradition of having a 1,000 yard rusher every year. That could be hard with the way we rotate RB's though.

I think one of the goals was not only to maintain the kind of culture we have in the locker room, but the style of play we had on the field. I think we will continue to see a prolific offense from our Eagles!
A most important point is "style of play". Aaron is not Beau and thus will not be the same. I would expect to and accept seeing a different style of play as long as we keep winning, which I am fully confident will happen.
Congrats Coach Best!

The oline has a full season under their belt and obviously some talent and we have some young talent at RB too so I think you were going to see us run more anyway even if Beau had stayed. Looking at what TJ and Q did, it's not as if Baldwin was against a more balanced attack. He was just great at recognizing strengths and playing the percentages. He wasn't afraid to abandon the run and throw it all over the field if that's what it took. Not every coach is that way.

Also keep in mind that Best played under Kramer and that 97 team was physical. I remember Larry Weir telling the story of the 97 game in Missoula where we ran it down their throats on the game winning drive and Kramer in the post game said "everyone in the stadium knew what we were gonna a do and we took that ball and emasculated them".

AB might just bring a little more physicality and nastiness to the culture. :thumb:

With all the defensive coaches coming back for their second year and Schmedding getting his legs under him for a 3rd campaign; I expect the defense to take it to new heights this season. Even with the loss of Ebukam and Sommer, the DL has a nice balance of size and explosiveness and all the redshirt juniors will make their impact felt. Think the Richmond game... every game in the BigSky this coming season. DB's are excellent all around and LB's another year wiser. Had already predicted that the defense will be in the top 50 next year and that is going against teams like Texas Tech and NDSU on the schedule. Super excited to see the product on the field. Last thought, the amount of competition that the last three recruiting classes have brought to the practice field will continue to pay off in mental toughness, depth and performance on the field. Looking for new team leaders to rise like Tiuli and Fettig to compliment Havili, who I credit for bringing a new physicality to the DL last year.

Coach Best press conference from today, for anyone that hasn't seen it.

Coach Best is an Eagle for life. None of this is personal. Now, can anyone REALLY JUSTIFY why he should be the HEAD FREAKIN COACH? Baldwin was the OC under Wulff & look at the production! Best is an OL coach & running game coordinator for a team that has a terrible run game. Cmon! I don't ever remember seeing a great running game come out of EWU after maybe 1997. Taiwan Jones' success came from Taiwan Jones... not Best.

Maybe Bill had some vacation coming up and thought "screw this I'll just hire Best". REAL justification anyone?

Yeah... Forte didn't average over 1000 yards and 6.7 yards per carry in '13 and '14 alongside a prolific pass offense and Brown didn't tear up Nova filling in for Jones.

Anyone else ever wonder if BF might be an Alphagriz troll account?

Really? Coach Best has the best football mind of any coach I had ( save coach Baldwin.) You must have never sat in on an oline meeting. Obvious and correct choice.

I can't believe it took several years for others to start asking that...

DefendtheRed, Reference our Defense we have #46- Conner Baumann, he was injured last year, #49- Jim Townsend, #50-Dylan Donahue, #52-Jack Sandleback, #55-Andre Lino, #57-Dylan Ledbetter,#72 Keith Moore, RS last season, #90-Keenan Williams, #91 Jonah Jordan, #92- Nick Foerstel, Injured last year, #93-
Marcus Saugen, #96-Darnell Hogan, #99- (Bad Ass) Jay-Tee Tuili. RS Rudolph Mataia JR. Just think of the incoming individuals this year. I will be at the NLI Feb 1st, @ Northern Quest. All of the above did play on the "D" with exception of Mataia JR, and Moore. What I saw of those two last year, they will be great addition to the "D", providing all comes back. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic E. Wallace

BF, why are you so damn negative about Coach Best? He was selected, let him get an opportunity and see how he does, then make your remarks. Each of us must start someplace in life, he was chosen, now let us see what he is capable of doing. I have all the confidence in Coach, as I did of all the others before Coach Best. I know here is where we all express our feelings, let the Coach do what he was chosen for.
Now I just hope all Players Return. I am not pissed, I just like to see people get an opportunity to perform, and then see what comes of it. Give Coach a Chance. Have a great Day. Vic E. Wallace

clawman,
You made me laugh with that comment! I am hoping for the best for our Country. Saw an article today on a Trump Backer, where there was a Doctor and his friends were in a Restaurant with a Black Waitress. She greeted him and his Friends with a smile, and she treated them with Dignity and respect. Their Bill was $70.+, he left her a $450.00 Tip, no Bull, because of her smile and how she did her job. He even wrote a little note to her. He said she didn't have to serve him and his Friends, he wished more people can find themselves to believe in mankind. Great Article. Vic E. Wallace
