Adams State

I just hope this isnt a sign of things to come. This DII school had more points in the paint, more points off turn overs and more second chance points. We shot 57 foul shots! only made 37 for 65%. We make half those and the game is more what we thought it would be. Our FG percentage was actually pretty good at 47% but we also had more turnovers than they did. Lots of work to do before friday!

Missed free throws made this game closer than it should have been. However, that was a good DII team. They are going to win a lot of games this year. I don't know what happened to them in Logan, but I suspect the refs called even more fouls than we saw tonight. They did a lot of hand checking, pushing and hacking at the ball. The good thing about a game like this is that we will see similar tactics from a couple of BSC teams. This game gives us a list of things to work on in practice. For the most part, our freshmen did a nice job out there, and I think they will settle down and play better in the future. :thumb:

Only 19 fouls were called on Adams State, 22 on USU. USU shot 18 free throws to their 28 free throws. USU was up by 39 before putting in all the Freshman at the end of the game

Right from the start things didn't look good. Weber was getting beat off the dribble. And when Adams went full court on defense Weber often had trouble handling it. Usually in exhibition games the whole bench plays. Not last night. Fuller and Fulton got just a few first half minutes. Gittens and Hill got the bulk of the bench minutes. I was impressed with Senglin, Gittens, and Hill. Those three will be fun to watch for 4 more years. But they are still freshmen.
We needed to see much more from the 3 seniors and Bolomboy. I thought Rahe's quote in the paper this morning was right on target -- not very tough. They need to get tougher. Defense is all about toughness.

I was thinking what aj said, that team could beat half the big sky, which is a very sad statement for the conference. I was impressed. That said, Weber looked really bad at times. Way too much one on one play and Rahe still needs to teach his teams how to play versus a full court press. On the positive side, our two true freshman are going to be very good.

we attempted more freebies in this game than any game i can remember in a while. adams committed 37 fouls in ogden. wow. and we won by 8. 37 free points to adams' 14.

i dont understand why anyone would think this game means anything. purpleblood just said dixie beat unlv. i dont think the mtn west is putting a fork in unlv.

rahe is 13-0 in exhibs.

in 2008 we should have lost to DII fort lewis in an exhib. we got lucky and beat them in overtime 96-92. then our first home game was utah state, jaycee's sr yr, they were wac champs. we beat them.

our 2010 team was our last big sky title, we beat colorado christian by just 10 in an exhib. we were even down at the half. whether you win an exhib game by 60 or 10 it doesn't mean anything, its not a real game. its a scrimmage.

My thoughts from last night: we left 20 free points off the board, could have won 105-77. Also, breaking the full court press is going to cost us big games again this year. Rahe's system of breaking it is crap. This is the 8th year, and we still can't break it. Expect most teams to press us all year long. So frustrating watching Trez catch the ball on the eye of the wildcat near mid court (not a soul within 20 ft of him), and instead of dribbling across mid court a lousy 5 ft, he passes it backwards 30 feet to a guard who is double teamed and in a corner. Why can't he (Rahe) freaking figure this out?? Rahe has lost more games from teams pressing us, combined with missed free throws than anything else. Yes, it was a preseason game, but there in no excuses in missed free throws and turnovers from the inability to break the press. I did not leave that game upbeat at all. Hope something changes fast, I bet Coach Rose pressed from the opening tip.

What's with all the drama on breaking the press? Seems like Tres has the ability. Are we overreacting to a bad exhibition game or is this going to be an ongoing drama? :wall:

Senglin and Gittens can sure get to the rack but most of the team trying to go one-on-one. Need more and better D and sharing of the ball.

Kinda agree with these comments. The two freshman are sure exciting, but they don't know the system yet. Both finish really softly around the rim, which is pretty impressive. However, when either Gittens or Senglin had the ball, our offensive flow was choppy. They weren't sure where to go with the ball -- so they attacked the basket.

I thought Coach Rahe did a lot of experimenting with lineups and put a lot of pressure on Senglin, even with breaking the press. I'm sure he saw it as a good growing time. Berry was clearly frustrated and played poorly. I don't expect that to carry over. In some sense I'm glad Adams State pushed us. That was no typical Montana Tech warmup and given our early schedule we needed somebody to battle. We have lots of work to get done on defense.

Finally, if Richardson doesn't shoot the ball at least 10 times a game, I'm going to be disappointed. He scored 13 points on 4 shots (3-4 from 3 and 4-5 FT) had 5 assists and was second on the team with 6 boards -- from the 2 spot. He is a very efficient player and needs the ball more this year. I know the he tends to be cautious, only shoots when he as a good shot, but everything runs more smoothly through him. They have got to find him more shots.

I don't see how this isn't alarming to some.. yes its just an exhibition but we got beat in almost every statistical category. I could see one or two things to work on but I agree with too much one on one, poor press break. If our team can work as a team and gel, we could be very good. But we gotta get there first. Guess that's what these games are for.

Don't forget everyone, the season doesn't really start till January. The Cats have two months before Conference play begins. And, in the end, that's all that matters.

Agreed, I wonder if seglin running the point is more of an experiment than anything . Jordan is a veteran who I thought brought the ball up and ran the point very well last year.. Jordan 1 Berry 2 Hill/Royce 3 Joel 4 tres 5 is what I see a solid group.

@UtahPirate,

It looked to me like both Dev and JR struggled due to the apparent lack of structured offense. It really seemed like they were kinda either forced into joining the "create-my-shot" style of play or got caught watching it happen. Neither looked comfortable or in any kind of flow. After Rahe, they've got to take charge and show some leadership. I'm scratching my head why Rahe didn't seem to-- at least the 2nd half didn't look much different from the 1st to me.

In the P&W game both teams were relentless in getting the ball into the bigs (especially Joel). Did that happen more than a handful of times the entire game vs Adams? I'm sure Rahe was still experimenting some with lineups and combinations but I sure couldn't see any kind of offensive execution that I thought I would.

Please don't say it's so :bad: I really want my team thinking EVERY game matters! I get what you're saying but if anyone associated with that team doesn't want to beat in-state or even out of state/conf. as bad as any other game, then they're not competitive enough for me to waste my time/money on.

I also want to see my team play every game as hard as possible no matter what. Sure its just an exhibition. But when I see our seniors shoot poorly from the foul line, I get pissed. Berry and Tres should be money from the stripe all night long. Tres should also be one of leaders in breaking the press, not the guy who looks lost and out of control. How does this team beat us in points in the paint?

I disagree with this "the season starts in January" BS! The season starts Friday in Provo. This season is time to put up or shut up. We have seen where missing clutch foul shots gets us. It's time to get to the dance period and the games start counting Friday.

Last nights exhibition was frustrating. We all wanted to see a continuation of the 30-7 CIT runners up. Fact of the matter, this is a new team. Four freshmen are going to be a substantial part of our team. Yes, there will be growing pains. As for the obsession with some members of this forum with the press. There isn't a hell of a lot you can do to break the press if a team is excellent at employing a press. Plus at times you had four under-classmen on the floor at once, with two true-freshmen playing a lot of mins. They were playing a very veteran team (lots of DI and JC transfers...a few guys who are not DI eligible) who had just played a DI team and were in a better position to be ready for a true game than Weber was. I just want to remind the fans, before Rahe we had two consecutive losing seasons and Wildcat hoops was not very competitive or fun to watch. In the last 7 seasons, the Cats have won 3 Conference Championships. Had five 20+ win seasons, with two 25+ and 30 and have been getting the attention of 4 star recruits. Most importantly, Weber is a major conference contender every year and has steadily climbed polls. Yes, last night was frustrating, but reading some of these posts are even more frustrating. You expect Senglin, Hill, Gittens, Bolomboy, Fuller to be all-stars. Berry and Richardson are playing with a bunch of new players and it takes time to glue everything together. People we won the game and scored 85 points after leaving an additional 20 at the line. Six guys were in double figures and Joel was 2 points away from being the seventh. The biggest areas of concern for me, was our defensive toughness and once again free throw shooting. Adams State has been playing games and Weber hasn't. Also, coaches do tell exhibition teams what to do against their teams to make them work harder and to improve in areas of concern. Yes, I want to see more passing and unselfish play, but none of us know what the Wizard was telling his guys to do. Maybe there was a pregame arrangement for Adams to play like SUU? Maybe, the Wizard wanted our guys to drive it a lot to the rack and play more one on one? Who knows. Maybe he didn't want to give anything away. I don't know. The guys were rusty, but it is good having a game under their belts.

Tal your post frustrates me. I don't care what Weber was before Rahe. It is about this season. There is no excuse for seniors missing that many free throws. We don't know what coach was telling the team, but I know it wasn't go miss 20 foul shots. Tres and Berry need to lead this team. That starts with making your foul shots.

Agreed.

I'll admit it, I got really frustrated watching Berry and Tres last night. Tres played tentatively on the boards and in the open floor, and Berry was trying to be Damian. And missing FTs!!! ugh!! I'm sick of that. All 7 losses last year can be attributed to missed FTs. Play within the system. I also think Richardson needs to captain the team and be far more vocal. Like Utahpirate said, he needs to be taking a lot more shots. He is our rock. But, it was our exhibition game and we do have a lot of youth on our team. To me, this is Richardson, Berry, and Tres' team. It is their time to shine and lead.

I don't think we will shoot that poorly from the FT line again this season. It looked to me like we just were not comfortable at the line or in some of our offensive sets. Toward the end of the game we seemed to be settling down a bit. We need to expect a few growing pains. After all, we are starting a freshman point guard. Yes, he is quite talented, but he is still a freshman with no D1 experience. He will show progress with most every game. This is what the pre season is all about. Everyone wants to win every game. Will every game be a diamond? Probably not, but I think that our guys will fight hard to win every game.

What I brought away from this game is that the youngsters seemed to settle down at the end and they all just need to get in sync with one another. :coffee:
