I love doing this as the regular season winds down every year. I'm never completely accurate, but it's still fun to speculate. Here it goes.
FIRST TEAM:
Kareem Jamar, Montana, Senior (Heart and soul of good Montana team)
Davion Berry, Weber State, Senior (Heart and soul of likely regular-season champs)
Troy Huff, North Dakota, Senior (One-man show for North Dakota, machine on defense)
Tyler Harvey, Eastern Washington, Sophomore (Leading scorer in Big Sky, which speaks for itself)
Joel Bolomboy, Weber State, Sophomore (Most dominant rebounder in Big Sky)
Mikh McKinney, Sacramento State, Junior (Led Sac to surprising season, great scorer and who shares the ball)
Chris Hansen, Idaho State, Junior (All-around baller, who regularly puts his team on his back)
SECOND TEAM:
Derrick Barden, Northern Colorado, Senior
Kyle Tresnak, Weber State, Senior
Jordan Gregory, Montana, Junior
Venky Jois, Eastern Washington, Sophomore
Quinton Upshur, Northern Arizona, Junior
Tate Unruh, Northern Colorado, Senior
HONORABLE MENTION:
Tomas Sanchez, Idaho State, Senior
DeShaun Wiggins, Portland State, Junior
Drew Brandon, Eastern Washington, Junior
Dylan Garrity, Sacramento State, Junior
Jamal Webb, North Dakota, Senior
Marcus Colbert, Montana State, Sophomore
Keron Deshields, Montana, Junior
Jeremy Senglin, Weber State, G, Freshman
(The talent level in the Big Sky is deep this season, so there are a few guys I struggled to leave off the honorable mention list, i.e., ND's Aaron Anderson and MSU's Flavien Davis)
AWARDS:
MVP: Davion Berry, Weber State (You can make great arguments for both Jamar and Huff here, but the Big Sky almost always goes with the best player from the regular-season champion. Only far-and-away talents like Damian Lillard seem to break that trend.)
Defensive Player of Year: Troy Huff, North Dakota (I almost went with Tresnak here, but he can be vulnerable at times and Huff has been an animal on opposing guards all season long. 2.4 steals per game is fantastic.)
Freshman of the Year: Jeremy Senglin, Weber State (This one is a no-brainer as nobody in the Big Sky even comes close, except for maybe Hill or Gittens. Haha.)
Newcomer of the Year: Quinton Upshur, Northern Arizona (Only real option, as there weren't a ton of transfers to have big years in the Big Sky)
Coach of the Year: Randy Rahe, Weber State (Always goes to regular season champ, so this one is a lock if WSU holds on.)
Thoughts?
