Athletic Facilities

Yes, as I've posted elsewhere tariffs increased the costs of steel roughly 50%. The tariffs were increased AFTER the new stadium announcement a year ago. Pay more for the same size stadium or reduce the size of the stadium are the options at hand.

And no, tariffs don't make nationally sourced materials more affordable. It makes companies of nationally sourced materials more competitive with companies that import materials while also impacting the supply and demand of available materials. Anyone in the construction space (especially at the onset of the tariffs) knows the impacts of what tariffs have had on budgets and material availability.
Many items have NOT seen much impact from tariffs. However cheap POT metal style “steel” Ala the old Bay Bridge Rusted out / Aloha Stadium Rusted out as well.
We don’t want that garbage. Yes concrete w rebar much more durable for 50 yrs. And build it w upgradability to 40K seating to add upper deck or whatever.
You get what you pay for in quality materials.

Looks like SLO’s gym built in…….1959.

Look forward to seeing it in person. They have been selling beer at the Nest the last couple of years. Parking was free at the Nest but have not heard if that is the same for the Pavilion. Wonder if they sold many of the $1410 court side season tickets. Hoping more students show up and that we do not need to bus them in from Turlock or Chico. Disappointing that we only have one D1 game at home, UCSB, before conference play in January. Presbyterian might be D1, but they are ranked 280th. Of course we are ranked 271so let’s hope we can win that one. For reference Kenpom ranked New Orleans 297 and we lost to them in the exhibition game.

The Pavilion will look good on cameras, and I had a buddy walk around it last week and the photos he sent makes this look like a legitimate venue. There will be good crowds initially with the hype of Bibby and the new venue. Winning will be able to keep some of the initial interest but we'll see how it plays out.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I'm concerned about all the ancillary needs like bathrooms, concessions, locker rooms, etc. This was a rec center that was converted into a performance venue and it wasn't designed as such. It will look good on camera but I have my doubts as to whether the other fan and team amenities will outweigh the camera optics. Regardless, I'll be there when this place formally opens.

Current Hornet Stadium site is plenty big for a 25k capacity stadium. Land is not our problem.

Attended the WBB opener at Hornet Pavilion last night. Very nice inside, the wait was worth it. Lots of concessions all over the place and peddlers going up and down the aisles to sell typical items. A significant step up in comfort and amenities that should hold Hornet athletics over for a decade until a real event center can be built. There are some issues with the logistics of other amenities that will be an issue, but nothing unforeseen given the fact a venue was shoe-horned into a rec center.

Yeah, I watched the womens game. Only issue is media camera view gets partially blocked by the mobile vendor selling cotton candy going up and down the isles. Also, would have been nice to have chairbacks.

just got an Instagram ad:

If this was on campus I think everyone would be happy, even if it’s not the 30k-35k stadium pushed at first.

I think campus leadership pushing for SDSU style stadium was a reach. SDSU got the land, already zoned for larger stadium, and partnered with other tenants.

I hope we hear progress from leadership soon.
Not even going to watch this as it will get my blood boiling as to why this cant be done on campus.

With all the competition in this city, there will never be a consistent need for a 40,000 seat stadium.

"legends will be made that will last forever"? Hardly.

I agree that the facility looks 1000x better on TV than The Nest. I agree they need to tweak the angle a little bit to mitigate standing fans/concessionaires from blocking the court view. I think if they go a little higher and zoom in a bit, it will mitigate that, and eliminate the "empty edges" of the baselines for an even better look.

My wife was casually watching the game last night and said the open feel and just "looks nice" of the new venue would make her more inclined to go to a game.

@SDHornet - how was the entrance, restroom situation, logistics?

Too bad we couldn't change the republic colors to green and gold and come to a public/private partnership on this. I still want to be confident in doing our own thing - but, the Sac Republic progress can't help but water down interest/money/etc. available to any SAC effort at CE or on campus...

Last I heard/read was that bids are due in December for the stadium. Haven't seen anything changing that timeline.

I'd rather wait for something concrete than have the school give an update just to address people's doubts.

Now is a good time for the admin to turn the attention to Shaq and Basketball and Hornet Pavillion.
