Was just going to post this.

Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - Many FCS programs have been announcing their 2014 schedules recently, but Eastern Washington and Sam Houston State are lagging behind - which is not necessarily a bad fact.

ESPN's desire to have a Saturday devoted to FCS coverage prior to the start of FBS action has zeroed in on this year's Sam Houston State-Eastern Washington matchup on the red turf in Cheney.
...
Eastern Washington and Sam Houston, both FCS powers in recent seasons, want this spotlight. They still need to get wavers from the NCAA to start their season early, but it's happened before with ESPN televising early season college basketball games. So the pieces seem like they would fall into place for the early opener.

I hope it happens, but I would be leery of our ability to pack Roos that early.

You know what use this as an opportunity to tell the world that the GATEWAY PROJECT IS BREAKING GROUND! And have some sort of announcement/ceremony that they can show!
Yes I would agree as well about filling the stadium, but with no other show in town (Cougs will not be playing) I am sure it will get done (get HS schools to bring their players during 2-a day's). Fans love football and even better they love warm weather football . . . . with winning programs!

Whether this gets done or not, you have to applaud Chaves for trying to make things happen...I hated our schedules from the past but it appears our schedules in the future are shaping up nicely. Well done...

As far as this game goes, who cares if the Students are there, EWU will bring a large crowd in August if this game is on ESPN. I hope this gets done as it would be fantastic for EWU, the Big Sky, and FCS...

The way the conference slate breaks down, moving this game to 8/23 would be really helpful. We don't really have a functional bye week as-is. From what I understand, ESPN is behind this deal but the NCAA has yet to approve.

Being the first game of the year would be great for coverage. That said, I don't think this is really a Chaves deal. The Sam Houston State game was scheduled before ESPN approached the NCAA about this event. I'd love to see it come off as that is always a great weekend.

Some more speculation. Let's make this happen. :thumb:

From what I understand, this is a done deal so long as the NCAA signs off. It's an absolute no-brainer for Eastern... great weather, no competitive events in the area, a game that wouldn't have been during the school year anyway, and an extra bye week.

Why would the NCAA be opposed to this game early? I can see why they might delay the announcement so a school does not get recruiting advantage but other than that why not us??

Is it too early?
Heres a quote from Copykat, a regular on their site.

"This game will be a mismatch. They have the Walter Peyton runner-up returning and we have our second-string RB as the only experienced play maker. Let ESPN find some other team to embarrass. "

clawman,
Reference SD New Stadium, let us see who break ground first, they or us, feeling it will be them, unless we get moving and quit stalling for numerous reasons. SD Stadium looks a little ours FB Stadium is going to be. Here is hoping we kick ourselves in the "BUTT" and get "GATEWAY PROJECT" going. Vic Wallace

Hopefully the team doesn't go into this game overconfident. We still haven't beaten them ever. Does anyone know if there are any updates as to whether this game will be played early on ESPN?

To All,
Spring FB is in my mind already   :thumb: :thumb: . Even I knew today was a Holiday, I had to make my normal run to the University. Saw approximately 40 Players doing their 7 on 7     , and the wind was blasting everything in sight. Was nice to see Bo Levi Mitchell, clap:   out their working with the Players. We didn't stick around very long, cold like you know, and very windy. Nice to see the Players are involved in the game before the Practices starts. Go Eagles!!!!! Vic Wallace

Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m. Pacific time

Ummm, WTF!? It's gonna be HOT... ESPN wouldn't budge on a night game? :ohno:
