BLM named QB1

Panelli to redshirt.

Still more positions to be determined!

Here's to everyone staying healthy!

Nice. Was this announced at the scrimmage today? In any cayse, congrats to BLM! Go Eags!

As one of BLMs' supporters said a few weeks back: Bo Levi would not go all the way to Cheney for a CHANCE to play. This "decision" comes as no surprise.

One of the Eagle players was specifically told prior to the scrimmage, by Coach Baldwin himself, that they were going with BLM. So it may not have been announced per se, but it is solid information nonetheless.

After todays scrimmage he should indeed be named the starter. The rest of the QB's were nowhere close to BLM. Sorry if that irritates some but we are in the business of winning games not pleasing parents. Go Eagles!!!

As I said in earlier posts, the best player will play and from what it sounds like, that's BLM at this point in time. Makes sense considering he was good enough to start for SMU! I don't believe for a second that anything was promised before the start of spring, but congrats to the kid for earning his spot. Go Eags!

p.s....How did the o line look today? I wasn't able to make it out, unfortunately.

Baldwin, however, wouldn't go so far as to call him the starter in the six-player battle for the quarterback position left vacated by two-time Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Year Matt Nichols.

"He has some great skills and tools, but we want everybody to battle through the whole spring," Baldwin said. "But we'll probably get it down to three, maybe four, players getting the majority of the reps in next week's practice."

That being said, he had a very impressive and productive scrimmage for someone that has only been with the team for a few practices.

Eagle 1, I agree with your input. We are in the business to win games. I have my favorites, hnowever, BLM looked great, now the other Quarter Backs will have to show what they can do. Honestly I am impressed with all 6 QB, as of yesterday, I think Bo is the front runner. Remember those are my opinions. There is a saying "Opinions are like Butt Holes, we all have one" Sorry ladies.

For the Katy, Texas, Fans. I spoke with Bo Levi twice yesterday, he expl;ained Cory will be here after his younger graduates from high school, then they would get in their car and make it here to Cheney, WA. He said Cory would walk on as a WR, his younger brother would register at EWU, and attend classes.

I must say Bo is very respectable, every time I talk with him, it is yes sir, etc. Maybe he noticed the grey hair in my mustche  After the scrimmage, I saw Bo again with some of his team mates at Subway getting some grub for their stomachs. It is nice to see him now mingling with the players.

The scrimmage was ok, high winds again. To many fumbles, I must say I think the Defense won the scrimmage. Our OL will get better. There were some hitting there yesterday. (For FrontFive4Life) Go Eags! Vic

Exactly what I've been wanting to hear! What year is he? Also, any clue about his 40 time? At 6'7 220 he's pretty light, so I could see somewhere in the 4.5-4.8 range. Won't matter though if he has some hands... just go up and get 'em! ;)

Cory Mitchell - 6'7
Brandon Kaufman - 6'5 :o
Nick Edwards - 6'3 :)

We got some big receivers... I love it!

To all: One QB was pulled aside prior to the practice/scrimmage and told that BLM was their guy. Told this kid he was #2 or could switch positions. This kid ran with the 1's and 2's all day Thursday and had a great practice. It is interesting that he would be singled out prior to the scrimmage with this information and then also be told that he would likely not get many snaps during the scrimmage because his "head wouldn't be in it". This kid still wanted to take a go at it, but was essentially held out. Why would the coach do this to the kid? The kid has done everything in the off-season that the coaches have asked of him. And this was how he was repaid. It is interesting indeed.

Yes - I know the kid and his family and sure they are disappointed. I think all of the QB's and their families are. The scrimmage and practices really have nothing to do with any sort of QB competition, but as this is a business, media attention can only help garner more attention to the program and coach needs the guys to follow Bo Levi. As it was, there was some allegiance to a few of the guys who had been in the program. This will change that for the immediate time being.

I think in the end - in the game of life, the guys that do the work, earn their spots, and actually live and work through disappointments or setbacks like this, be it in sports, work, school, etc - will be the men in the future that will perservere and that we'd all be proud to call son. Getting where they get in life by any other means will likely only lead to disappointment and/or failure and perhaps an inability to cope with these kinds of things when they can no longer be managed by anyone other than ones' self.

Here's to the guys who have just received that chance to grow from this.

Rock the Red - Yes, football is a business period and it even starts in high school sports. Money talks. Tell the QB to keep his head up.

EWURanger,

If BLM is #1, here are my guests for #2 & 3. Jeff Minnerly, #2, Nick Gauthier #3. These are my guests if Greg Panelli is redshirting. Jeff knows the plays, and if I am not mistaking, Ferris ran the same plays once upon a time. Jeff is very smart individual, I told him a week ago, to keep his head up, and do not quit regardless of what happen. Take advantage of the Scholarship.

I remembered last year when we did not have a punter, Nick Gauthier was used to throw the ball for punt returns, believe me, he has a damn good arm on him. Now I am just guessing at who is #2 &3 QB.I will be out there tomorrow @ 4pm for practice. Love our team, they are gong places in the Big Sky again this year.

About the Red Turf, I only wish we had a game on it before we face the Griz. I saw a file of Mario Brown, RB one of the Recruits coming in, that young man is very fast. Tiwan Jones stated he just can't wait for those Recruits to arrive, so "he can show them what speed is about". We have 14 outstanding Recruits coming in,we will have a lot of speed.

Our Prop 48 from last year should be ready for this year. Baines RB, is supposed to be very good. Go Eags! Vic
Hope to see some new faces at our practices. Vic

Certainly a difficult thing to deal with after working hard in preparation for a full spring of competition. It seems like the coaches were familar with the players abilities, and had made their decision. Apparently they didn't think giving him additional snaps at the scrimmage could do anything to change their minds.

If their minds were made up, one could view it as being honest with the player, providing him options, and reserving the snaps in the scrimmage for players they feel could help the team at that position. Still not an easy thing to take though.

Hard to argue with BLM's performance on Saturday.

From Saturday's snaps I would think Gauthier #2, but probably still a competition for the backup spot. They might want the RS freshman as the #3.

Go Eags!

I cannot remember the last time we had this many players competing for the QB position. One has to assume that one or two of these players are athletic enough to play other positions and contribute on the team, even of they don't play at QB. Thoughts?

You bet they'll be able to contribute. The fact is you just can't have 6 QBs and expect your eventual starter to get enough reps during practice to be effective. Think back a few years and you'll remember that Jason Harris started out as a QB for us and eventually was moved to LB and then, most recently, to TE. He also has contributed on special teams throughout. Don't write a kid off simply because he's not the one slingin' the pigskin on Saturday! :D

FreeBird,
Attended practice today, spoke with our Quarter Backs, none of them know who will be #1 QB. I did find out that Jeff Minnerly was moved to Safety. He didn't ask for it, this was a decision made by the Coach, which Coach I don't know. Hope my naming Jeff as the #2 QB, I didn't put bad luck on Jeff. Spoke with Bo Levi, he stated his 40 time is about 4.8, then he smile.

Also spoke with Anthony Vitto today, told him the same thing I told Jeff Minnerly, regardless of what happen, remember he has his "Scholarship", get his education,, football is secondary. He smiled, and agreed his elducation comes 1st. Being honest, what I have seen, Bo Levi may be the front runner for #1, Nick Gauthier #2, Anthony Vitto #3, that is providing Greg Panelli is redshirting, of course I am not the Coach, he will make the final decision.

Footballdirt,, wish I had your email address, could talk to you more about "A.V".

I saw our OL went one on one against the DL, I am very much impressed with OL #61 Steven Forgette, 67 Caleb Worthington,"75 Cody Humphry, #76 Will Post, #77 Brandon Murphy, all are Freshman, and they look outstanding, they held their own today. Cold as usual, and wet grounds.

Our defense will be allright. We talk about Bo Levi, we have another QB noone talks about Scott Burgett from Peoria, AZ, and very good at his position.

Matt Lawrence from Sand Point Idaho, via Carroll College, In Montana, he was working out with the OL, two walkons, I wasn't able to get their names, also working with the OL. I am talking about our new comers from last year, I know what we have from last year and what they are capable of doing.

Bo Levi worked with the #1 OL, Nick Gauthier with #2 OL, and Anthony Vitto with the #3 OL. Our Quarterbacks were throwing to each other as WR, and they all looked good snatching the balls.

Someone spoke about Jason Harris as a QB, is now TE, he was an outstanding QB, however, we had so many QBs,he didn't have a chance. All of you know how much I love our team and personnel, and I just hope all are on deck with ever decisiions our Coaches makes.

I remembered few years ago we had another young man who was a RB, we had so many RBs, Coach Wullf stated he had to find a position for him. He became a WR, and I must say he became "A Damn Outstanding WR". Eric Kimble, I am sure all you Eagle Fans knew him. He end up playing with Miami, Dolphins, etc. So much for my book. Go Eagles! Vic p.s. my Gentle Little Giant Player, Brice Leahy, (6'7"295 lbs) is not limping as much. He is a Senior this year. He always told me Vic I am no longer a Little Giant, I am mean as they come.

Having Panelli redshirt is a good idea, but the problem is that he may have already redshirted. He is a 2007 graduate of Orestimba High School so unless he was on a religious mission or in the military for a year, the 2010 football season will be his fourth season since graduating. Meaning he would be a redshirt Jr. for the season.

If that is correct, he and Gauthier are probably battling for the back-up spot. Having three junior QB's is not a ideal situation and it would not surprise me that the loser of the #2 competition will have to move on to another school. Burgett will likely be out as well and the staff will do what they can to help these players land somewhere. EWU is not so flush with scholarship dollars that they can afford four out-of-state QB's on the roster.

Sorry to see that Minnerly has been moved to safety. But that was a possibility when he was being recruited and I believe that was explained to him at that time. The coaches promised to give him a chance to play QB, but they also knew he was athletic enough to play somewhere else. There is a need for depth at safety and it's my hope he does well at that spot.

Anyone who saw the scrimmage last week should have seen that there was little doubt Mitchell is the best QB on the roster. His arm strength is greater, his release quicker and his poise/presence better than the other hopefuls. That's not a knock on anyone, by the way. It was just easy to see why he was recruited to play at an FBS school. We have been very fortunate for the last decade or so to see some great QB play at EWU. From Salanoa to Blankenship to Meyer to Nicholls, EWU has had the best run of QB's in the conference. Here's hoping Mitchell continues that trend.

My name is Jeff Minnerly and I am Jeff Minnerly's dad. It is sure interesting to read these forums. From what I can tell, alot of people who "know" stuff, don't "know" much. But it's entertaining, I guess.

Vic, I believe you to be an exception to the above statement. You not only state your well informed opinion (who could argue with someone that is at practice everyday?!?), but you also sign your name to it. I always look forward to what you write because you are my eyes out there since I can't get to the practices. Not sure why everyone hides behind the catchy usernames....

To thewatcher, thanks for the well wishes to Jeff in his success at at his new position. For the record, Jeff was never told that he might play safety when he was recruited.

Go Eags,
Jeff

Jeff,

I just hope I didn't disappoint you by mentioning Jeff switching of position. I hope Jeff told you about it, and you didn't find out about on this web. Maybe in the future I will keep it all to myself until someone else mention what is going on, then get my 2 cents worth in.

I found out there other personnel from california, etc, that is on our web, searching for news about their sons playing sports for EWU. Heading to practice in a few minutes. Take care. Your friend. Vic Wallace
