Sorry, Adams St, but I'm looking past you. BYU, and the start of the real season, is one week away. Weber will be trying to pick up their first win ever in Provo, and Coach Rahe's first win vs BYU. BYU's strength is their guard line (Haws and Carlino) and they could start 4 guards, along with big man Mika. It will be interesting to see how Mika plays in his first real collegiate game. If Weber can control him and the paint, as I know Joel and Trez can, I think they have a chance. Got to keep those two out of foul trouble though, which is always difficult to do in Provo. Thoughts?

Hard to guess what could happen as we really don't know much about either of this year's teams off paper. Rahe has not fared well-- all things considered-- in-state, especially vs byu. No team goes into the Marriott Center and gets a fair shake from the zebras so there's added adversity there. Weber always looks like they're stuck in mud playing there. I really hope to see our bigs stay out of foul trouble and hold their own and steps it up defensively.

I know Weber has played in some tournaments before in the Marriott Center, have they never won there in any game or just against the zoobs? All streaks must come to an end-- better sooner, than later; how about this year?

I think that they get favorable officiating due to the large, supportive crowd they get at their place. Also, when the refs arrive at SL International, things seem to be normal, and then when they drive into Utah County they realize that they are not in Kansas any more. I think that they are worried about escaping that zoo with normal undies. How can they call a fair game with that in the back of their minds?

I don't even like to drive through there in the daytime. Nights there scare the crap of me. :o

My simple theory is this regarding playing in Provo. If we didn't win in Provo with Lillard then I ain't expecting to win there anytime soon without Lillard. 5 vs 8 just isn't a fair playing field no matter what BYU fans say.

Come on Cats fans ... losing in Provo has nothing to do with the zebras. Last time we played there with Lillard half the team was sick. The zoobies spent all their time taking him out of the game and then no one else stepped up. It is simply time to play smart, physical and motivated basketball against this team and earn the win. We seem to be able to do this at home against the Cougs, but not at their house.

Four years ago I went down and the officials clearly took the momentum away from Weber. One or two bad calls is all it takes to deflate a team. Hopefully we are mentally prepared for some bad calls and just keep playing without letting it affect or game plan. Apparently there are tickets available at the Dee, but I'm not interested in buying them unless they are close enough for the refs hear me. It would be nice to get a few very vocal Weber fans close enough to do the yelling the players can't!

Does anyone truly know the source of the officiating at BYU? It's my understanding they are
Big Sky refs, but I can't imagine they could be. If they are, why the horrible officiating? Someone needs to explain to the officials it's not there job to determine who wins. Officiating is so wacky for these in state games at the start of the season.

On another note, it's going to be a hostile environment. Weber has picked up several big road wins so I have faith in the team. I'm afraid the team will panic and settle for outside shots. The way to win in hostile environments is to run when you can and keep pounding the ball inside.

Go Weber!

uh lets see weber is 10-9 at home vs byu having lost 5 straight in the dee, last home win, 2003.
at byu we are 0-18
overall we are 10-27

i believe we have played 3 other games at byu against other schools and we lost all 3. so we might be 0-21 in provo.

lillard, jermaine and harold all lost in provo...how did bruce lose there? i am not the most confident fan regarding provo but i like our chances in any road game this yr except nov 8. i wonder if we could have got some wins in provo had they played us between '68-'73? byu was the last instate school to start playing us. usu 1971, utah 1973, byu 1974. we went DI in 1962.

can we really win in provo in 2013-14?

WSU won a single tournament game in a cougar classic years ago in the MC. Last time down there, the team was sick, Bull dislocated his elbow the game prior, it was a bad turn of events. But yes, a WSU team has won a game in Happy Valley, just not against the likes of UVU and BYU.. :wall:

Is a win likely? probably not

But maybe a crappy exhibition game is what these guys need to go down there with some fire. We will have the advantage inside, but be overmatched on the guard line. We should feed the post on every possession.

Even though Carlino and Haws are better shooters, I don't think either are quicker or more athletic than our back-court guys. BYU beat us last year because of two reasons. First, Rose employed an ingenius trapping half-court zone and triangle and 2 and second, Davies destroyed us inside.

In my opinion, BYU hasn't really improved on last year. Yes, Haws and Carlino are good. Yes, Collingsworth is back and Skyler Halford is pretty good too, and yes, they had one of the greatest recruiting classes in their history. Perhaps the best, but most of those guys are on missions except Skyler Halford, Eric Mika, and Luke Worthington. Mika and Worthington are pretty damn good, but neither are Brandon Davies, yet. They are going to be good...well Mika will be. Other Than those two the Cougs have Nate Austin and Josh Sharp back, and have added Graham Pingree. On their roster, they don't have any traditional centers listed. They are definitely guard heavy.

Weber has to focus on getting the ball into the blocks. Weber will need Tres and Joel on top of their games. I hope Berry has gotten his jitters out and will be ready to go on Friday. We need him and J-Rich to lead us. Shockingly I have plenty of faith in our freshman and if Fulton gets time. Weird...Tres and Berry just need to remember to lead and enjoy the moment. Not to put a lot of pressure on themselves. Go out and play, have fun, and build the team.

I'm not really sure about the Cougs...I don't pay them much attention unless they are about to play Weber, so I'm not sure who their starting five is right now. I'm guessing that it is Carlino, Haws, Collingsworth, Sharp, and Austin...with Winder, Mika, Halford, and Fishcher coming off the bench. Maybe we will see Worthington off the bench too.

PG: Carlino vs. Senglin: Due to Carlino's experience, Advantage BYU, but Senglin is quick and will be under-estimated by the Cougs. I think BYU will be pretty impressed with the Freshman when all is said and done. Advantage BYU

SG: Haws vs. Richardson: Haws is an awesome basketball player, and is one of the best offensive players in the nation. Yet, Richardson isn't too bad himself. Offensively, he will get his points. Along with his experience his speed is under-appreciated by opponents. Finally, he is the top defensive player in the Sky (Joel will be a close second). Both are team leaders. Advantage BYU

SF: Collingsworth vs. Berry: Back from Russia already?? Collingsworth is a good player, and will be a force for the Cougars in the future, but this is his first game in two years. He will be a bit rusty. I wouldn't be surprised if Rose starts Haws at the three and has Skyler Halford/Anson Winder at the 2. Wouldn't really help his cause. Rich is better than Halford/Winder, even though both have really improved their game. If only we would have known a scholarship was available, Halford might instead be a Cat now. No matter, who gets the SF start, I'm thinking Berry is going to be the go to guy. Berry looked really good in the scrimmage, and I heard was excellent in the no one is suppose to know about game, yes, he struggled a bit in the Exhibition, but so what. We all know he is our team leader, and we know he will be on this Friday. Advantage Weber

PF: Sharp vs. Bolomboy: Sharp can shoot, but his inside defense is weak. Bolomboy is still trying to figure out how good he will become offensively, but defensively, as long as he times things well, can lock down players. Besides, he is far quicker and talented than Sharp. Sharp is a great glue guy and does the little things, but so does Bolomboy. Advantage Weber

C: Austin vs. Tresnak: Big Tres is the best big on the floor. He needs to remember to let the game come to him and not try to push things. Just be Tres and do what he does best. Advantage Weber

Bench: I wish Gelaun was still with us, but Gittens looks like quite the threat. Royce is solid defensively. I like Fuller, Hill, and Fulton. BYU has a bunch of youth just like Weber and a couple of guys who can make things happen.
Slight Advantage BYU

Coach Staff: Rahe has never beaten BYU. And he has never been close in Provo. Advantage Rose.

BYU is the best in the state till proven otherwise. Even though USU looked pretty good last Friday. We have a few things to work on.

Based off their two exhibition games, Sharp won't start and will be the last player off the bench. Haws, Carlino, and Collingsworth will start. I think they either go small (mainly to protect their limited number of bigs from getting into foul trouble) and start Winder or Bartley and Mika or Austin, or they go big and start Mika and Austin. Also, Fischer has to sit out this season.

Your analysis seems pretty reasonable to me. However, with regards to Joel and Tres, this sounds good assuming they both can avoid foul trouble. The few areas where Weber might have the advantage could be affected by bad calls and/or home cooking; this is where the officiating talk earlier in the thread could become relevant and actually change a close game. I sure hope the game is called well and fairly.

Anything is possible, the bad game we had vs Adams State might have been just what this team needed. Now we can see what needs help and work on it, Freethrows dont even get me started (I dont want to have to say Freethrows will cost this team yet another championship).

If Weber doesnt win, at least make it respectable, none of these 40 point blowouts we have been accustom to in Provo, if your going to go down, go down FIGHTING.

GO WILDCATS

Our keys to the game will be 1) keep our bigs out of foul trouble, and 2) slow the game down. If BYU gets off to the races it could be a long night. Also, our starting bigs will have an advantage but unfortuantely BYU is deeper off the bench at that position.

I watched BYU play Alaska on TV and that game was all about tempo. Alaska had zero bigs so everything was from the perimeter. Alaska shot a miserable % which led to easy baskets for the Y, end of story. Also, BYU's confidence seems a little fragile right now, especially with so many new and young players. If we can get off to a good start and keep the pressure on they will definitely feel the pressure at the end.

I will definitely be at the game and the refs will hear me if I am on the right end of the court!

Weber State lost last year because Davies killed us. I think he had over 30 points in the game and dominated! This game will be won or lost in the paint. Tres has the talent to be the difference. He and Joel are both the best advantage we will have on the floor at their positions. It's time to quit talking about potential. It's time to quit talking about being the best program in Utah. It's time to execute! The time is now!
