Coach Bone

The USC situation doesn't help our cause. If Floyd takes the Arizona job, then I think guys like Bill Grier and Randy Bennett would be strong candidates at USC. If they are Bone's main competition for the WSU gig, and they have a chance to go to USC instead, then they are headed to the Trojans. Bone probably deserves the WSU job anyway, but he may end up getting it by default.

Tim Floyd pulled his name out of the Arizona race.

Apparently Terry Porter's name is in the hopper. Sterk said on Seattle radio that he was intrigued.

Crap. Seattle U lost their head coach Callero to Cal Poly. The candidates for the opening at Seattle U are Cameron Dollar and Jim Shaw - potential candidates for PSU should Ken Bone leave.

That's no good. If Seattle gets into the WCC in a couple years, then that might actually be a better job than PSU. I hate this time of year.

Portland State's Bone interviewed by WSU

Washington State appears to be moving closer to deciding on a replacement for departed basketball coach Tony Bennett.

WSU athletic director Jim Sterk interviewed Alabama Birmingham coach Mike Davis during the Final Four in Detroit, then returned home Saturday, according to The Spokesman-Review in Spokane. Portland State coach Ken Bone drove to Seattle on Sunday for an interview with Sterk.

The Seattle Times said a decision could come soon after the Bone interview.

"I'm intrigued by the job and interested to hear what they have to say," Bone said before his interview. "I think it could be a really good job for somebody, and I'm interested to find out if it's a good job for me."

Bone and Davis are the only coaches known to have interviewed for the job. Bone, a former head coach at Seattle Pacific and an assistant at Washington, has taken Portland State to two consecutive NCAA Tournaments. Davis replaced Bob Knight at Indiana and took the Hoosiers to the Final Four.

Bennett left WSU to become the coach at Virginia.

Stew Morrill to stay at Utah State
Stew Morrill, the Utah State basketball coach who was interviewed Sunday in Seattle by Washington State officials seeking a new coach, has pulled out of his candidacy.

By Bud Withers

Seattle Time staff reporter

Stew Morrill, the Utah State basketball coach who was interviewed Sunday in Seattle by Washington State officials seeking a new coach, has pulled out of his candidacy, the Western Athletic Conference school reported this morning.

It was unclear whether WSU had yet made an offer to any candidate. The Cougars had set a week as a goal for naming a new coach when Tony Bennett left for Virginia last Monday.

Morrill's decision may swing the spotlight to Portland State's Ken Bone or a candidate interviewed by WSU AD Jim Sterk and his associates in Detroit for the Final Four.
"Washington State contacted me and I think it was understood all along I have deep roots here," Morrill said. "It would be very difficult for us to leave Utah State University, Cache Valley and the state of Utah."

Morrill has been at Utah State 11 years and taken teams to the NCAA tournament six times. Bone, the former Seattle Pacific head coach and Washington assistant, is 77-49 in four years at Portland State, the last two seasons taking the Vikings to the NCAA tournament.

Cougar hoops: Has WSU found its man?

WITH TWO OF the coaching candidates that Jim Sterk has interviewed withdrawing their names from consideration on Monday morning, it could very well mean that Wazzu has found its man. Unless Sterk is a master of disguise, all indications at this point would suggest that Portland State's Ken Bone will succeed Tony Bennett.

On Monday, Utah State issued a press release saying that Stew Morrill was no longer a candidate for the WSU job.

Morrill reportedly interviewed with Washington State and Sterk on Sunday.

Mike Davis, head coach at UAB, interviewed with Sterk on Saturday in Detroit. But this morning, according to the Birmingham News, Davis has dropped his pursuit of the WSU position as well.

As of 11 this morning, WSU had not scheduled any press conferences or made plans to release any statements.

The only public comment from Bone, who led Portland State to the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons, was made before his WSU interview.

"I'm intrigued by the job and interested to hear what they have to say," Bone is quoted as saying in The Oregonian. "I think it could be a really good job for somebody, and I'm interested to find out if it's a good job for me."

Rumor on the WSU board is that an offer will be made on Tuesday.

This indeed sucks.

I really thought Bone would stick around for a bit longer. A 3rd straight ncaa bid next year would have really put him in the coaching limelight.

WSU Offers Coach Bone:

Maybe Phil Knight can enter the picture and match whatever Washington State has offered and put down a down payment for a new facility. He did help retain Pat Casey for Oregon St., but, okay, I'm reaching. Good Luck Coach Bone, no matter what your decision is.

Nooooooooooooooooo!

Actually, we could see this coming for a few days, so I'm relieved that PSU can now get on with finding a replacement. Hopefully Beseda or some interpid reporter can offer a scoop on who we may be considering.

Oh my, that's the way it goes. At least he's staying in the NW. I've always like the Cougars, and this way Bone will get to kick some duck butt.

Hope we'll find a worthy successor. We can't afford to lose momentum now.
