Coach Bone

Well, it doesn't make it harder to okay a project. We can talk about financing later.

Somehow I believe Bone when he says he wants to stay. Lets hope no other schools in the NW becomes too interested.

I only feel threatened that Bone would leave if there were another NW school looking for a coach. And I don't see another job opening up right now in the PNW except for maybe Oregon. They would never take a PSU coach.

+1

The duckies would likely try to get a big name.....If they fire their current coach.

Anyone could come calling for Coach Ken, in the end its his decision. All depends on how he feels about his situation at PSU. You never know.......Some coaches look for greener pastures.....some would rather just keep their current lifestyle. I for one am hoping he stays as long as possible.

Ken Bone Building A Powerhouse Northwest Program At Portland State

I think the UW job is the only where he would absolutely leave no matter what, but I don't see that opening up anytime soon. I don't think Gonzaga would hire outside their coaching tree, as they have a tradition of naming assistants as "next in line." If they didn't promote an assistant, the Zags would probably get Grier from San DIego, who used to be the "next in line" before he went south. If we can build the arena and join the WAC, I think Bone would stay for a long time.

I would have to think that Bone would be on the short list at Wazzu, they seem like they would be a match... heck, Bone should be on the short list of any west coast program that is coach hunting this year (except UO & Ariz; I agree that that UO wouldnt go after him, and I think UA will be looking for a "splashy" hire).

This is what I feared. Bone would leave PSU for a Pac 10 job in the Northwest. And Bone would definitely be on the short list at WSU even though he probably wouldn't get serious consideration at Oregon because he is a PSU coach. I am keeping my fingers crossed that Sterk goes with someone else.

Does Ernie Kent have a chance of staying on at Oregon?

I just checked the message boards and Bone's name is all over the place. I was hoping people would be dropping more names but I don't see much beyond the St. Mary's coach unless they go with another "system" like the Beavs did with Robinson.

Yeah, if Bone is offered this job he'll take it, and 95.5 reported that he's set to interview. So who is on deck at PSU?

Hope Bone bombs the interview, I say that for totally selfish reasons and out of total respect for Coach Bone. If he gets the job, I say stay in-house and try to keep Geving.

I hope WSU goes in another direction. However, if Coach Bone gets the job, I'm hoping we interview a number of candidates. The last time we stayed in-house we gave the job to Sobotka and it took us 6 years to get through that mess. I think Coach Bone has shown that someone can be quite successful at PSU so there would be some good candidates.

The Tacoma News Tribune reports...

Tony Bennett resigned as Washington State head basketball coach to take the coaching job at the University of Virginia. Here’s an early list of potential candidates to succeed Bennett at WSU, their current employers, and their resumes:

Randy Bennett, St. Mary’s: One of the hot coaches in the NCAA, Bennett has made St. Mary’s a perennial WCC title contender. No relation to Tony.

Dan Monson, Long Beach State: The coach who helped build Gonzaga into the power that it is today.

Ken Bone, Portland State: A former UW assistant, Bone has made PSU one of the top programs in the Big Sky.

Larry Krystkowiak, unemployed: One-time head coach of Milwaukee Bucks and University of Montana, helped lead the Griz to NCAA first-round upset of Nevada in 2006.

Billy Grier, San Diego: Former top assistant at Gonzaga got USD to tourney and a win over UConn two years ago.

Matt Woodley, Washington State assistant: Hired when Tony Bennett became head coach, he’s a respected recruiter.

Bobby Knight, ESPN: Someone – most likely someone named Dick Vitale – will bring Knight’s name up.

Why would Bone leave now for WSU?

Next year, PSU could be favored to win the Big Sky, and will have a great shot at a third straight ncaa tourney berth. If two straight ncaa bids get you a shot at WSU this year, imagine what three straight could do next year.

WSU is Pac-10. However, It is also a program that sucked from the early 80s until 2005. Things could go well, but they could also go really bad there. PSU may have support issues for their athletic programs, but one thing that they don't have is the location. Portland is a great place, and it is far better than Pullman, WA. Bone is a great recruiter (especially in Washington), but Pullman is a much harder place to sell to kids than Portland.

Ken Bone expected to interview for WSU job

Canzano's back at it:

Canzano: Thank him and hope he leaves

Screw John Canzano.

The only reason he wrote this is because OSU didn't offer him a job last year when he thought they should have. He doesn't care about Bone, he cares about himself. Had he not made any 'hire Ken Bone' comments last year, he'd have ripped Bone a new one after the loss to Xaiver. Instead, he holds Bone on a self made pedestal, rather than the merits of Bone's accomplishments, and ripped into our kids after that loss. He is a hack and should just leave the south park blocks be and worry about the Kent situation in Eugene.

Canzano has this weird thing about wanting to get coaches to leave PSU. He gets a pay check from Paul Allen's radio station 95.5 which makes him a paid hack for Paul Allen. When he isn't sucking up to the Blazers, he has to invent other stories.

I agree about bombing the interview, but disagree about Geving. I'd rather do a big search and get a proven head coach or a young up and comer from a big name program, like Bone when he was the top assistant at UW.

I pray that Coach Bone doesn't leave but here are some possible replacements if he does...

Jim Shaw, assistant coach at UW. Was a candidate for the PSU job when Bone was hired. Knows the Northwest. Would be a great replacement for Bone.

Larry Krystkowiak, unemployed: One-time head coach of Milwaukee Bucks and University of Montana, helped lead the Griz to NCAA first-round upset of Nevada in 2006. If the Cougs were smart, they would hire this guy. Proven head coach plus it would really tick off the Griz if he went to PSU.

Ray Giacoletti, asst at Gonzaga and former head coach at EWU. Took EWU to NCAA. http://www.gozags.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/giacoletti_ray00.html

Wazzy plans to move quickly. Hopefully the drama will be over soon, one way or another.
