D1 Transfers

This time of year, and throughout the summer, D1 transfers start happening quite regularly. Already, we have had Williams transfer to a JC in Texas and we will probably have more transfers in the next few weeks. The national count of D1 transfers is approaching 250 now and will probably be closer to 700 when it is all said and done. Some of those are 5th year seniors who are eligible without a red shirt year.

Going over the list, there are many who are just not D1 talent. Those players will end up at D11 or D111 programs or maybe JCs if they have the eligibility. Some legit D1 talent will also end up at a lower division. Unfortunately, some of these guys will end up out of basketball altogether.

There are many on the list who are solid D1 talent. They will probably find new D1 programs to go to. There are many 3 star guys and a handful of 4 and 5 star guys. I'm sure that we have teams in the BSC who are watching this list closely.

The problem really is a numbers game. there are more guys looking to transfer than there are openings on teams. By taking in a transfer player, most teams would have to make room, thus creating another transfer player hitting the market.

I noticed today that Michael Green, a 3 star PG at NAU, and Robert Jones III, a starting forward at ISU, have announced that they are transferring. There will be a lot more coming out of the BSC. Probably a lot coming in as well.

The teams that seem to have the most openings are Sac, ISU, and SUU. Several BSC schools show a surplus and will be losing some.

Buckle up, it's going to be interesting. :coffee:

I hated to see Jones go, he's got as much talent as anybody on ISU's team, but he was wildly inconsistent. Right now the ISU roster is at stasis -- they have one early signee, Callum Kimberly, a 6-9 kid from Australia, and they lost one senior in Telfair. They have a commitment from Jacob McCord, a 6-7 JUCO, who would take Jones' spot. I'm assuming there will be further movement since they recently offered another 6-10 JUCO and I know Evans is actively recruiting a JUCO point guard.

I failed to mention PSU. They have multiple openings and have not hired a new coach yet, after firing their guy a few weeks back. They have some fall signings but it is not clear if they will be staying with a coachless program or seeking to get out of their commitment. It could be a nearly complete turnover of players at PSU.

SUU still has 4 or 5 openings.

Some coaches will leave at least one spot open all spring and summer. Sometimes they can pick up a high level player who simply could not find a spot throughout the whole process.

Gee olds...how many openings do we have?? I only count 2...and we haven't "councelled out" anyone for years...I love that "councelled out" vs "dumped"....just doing what is best for the kid (lol)....don't kid yourself...if the kid didn't accept the "councelling", he would be "dumped" and all for the good of the coaches arse after first convincing the kid that his best move would be to come play for the same coach...

I think Ian Fox is looking for a D1 program now that his JUCO career is over.

Aaron Harmetz
Mason Stuteville

There has been little pressure on Katz to actually win anything. I think that Katz does a good job and that he is quite loyal to his players. That is commendable. There is less pressure on him to win than at some other programs.

I don't know why PSU fired their guy. There may well be something we can't see from the outside. However, it appears that lack of winning was the issue. Katz and Rahe may be the longest standing coaches in the BSC.

Ian Fox was named California JUCO co-player of the year, believe it or not. And as of a few days ago, he has zero offers... I'm guessing there's enough baggage there to scare off a scholarship offer, although I wouldn't be surprised to see him as a walk-on at a Big West type school.

Stefan Gonzalez was granted his transfer from St. Mary's yesterday, and he's from Highland High in Pocatello -- wonder if Evans or ISU will see if there's any mutual interest in him coming home.

I thought the same thing, when I saw Gonzalez hit the list. With Ian, it's his dad and some attitude problems that seem to go along with him. He will end up somewhere, but he isn't quite good enough to overcome his baggage at a mid major. He is low D1 or high DII at best. I'd be willing to bet that Robert Jones III will slide to a DII, with only one year left to play. If he had 2 or more years, he might find a DI team to take him. He can be a big star at a DII program.

I suspect Gonzalez is one of those kids who never goes home again -- kinda like his sisters who both transferred from Kansas to UNLV. But we shall see. He is certainly talented enough to be a decent Big Sky player.

Aaron Harmetz was a walk-on (unrecruited) with a bad back who red-shirted and didn't even practice with the team.....Mason was NOT councelled out but decided with his family that he wanted to move on and try something new, he was still welcome to complete his scholorship if he desired to but he chose to go to California Baptist (which will be the next new WAC team as they are going DI)....nice try though....and back to the original assumption that we have the most openings of BSC teams..I still only count 2...

Sounds like both of them were advised by somebody to not return. It's a fine line. Sometimes it takes a year to find out that a player isn't going to make it. Doesn't matter if they made the roster as a granted player or as a walk on. They were on the roster and left the program because they, their parents and the coaches decided together that they wouldn't be back the next year. Call it what you want. It has happened far less at Sac than almost anywhere else. If that is good or bad, I don't know.

I could see that Sac only had two grants to give, but that is two more than most BSC schools have. That is why I know that there will be several more transferring out of the BSC.

According to a Retweet from Garside. Mckay Cannon is transferring.
That sounds like a credible source. If true, it really saddens me. I really liked the young man and his family. They are great people and were big WSU supporters. McKay may not be the most athletic guy, but he sure has a lot of fight in him. If this is true, some team out there is going to get a gem. :notworthy:

Sounds like Cannon must have seen the handwriting on the wall... I think it is for the best. He was never going to be a player who brought much to the team even if he was a great guy and good team guy. That gives Rahe another slot to try and bring in someone better. I hope this means that Rahe thinks his incoming point is a sure fire thing. I think we need to add a "big" who can play immediately and help the team.

Randy said this verbatim at the end of last season. And he proceeded to bring in George Darling.

I'm pretty disappointed that McKay is leaving. We all best hope that Doc is as good as advertised, because we do not have another ball-handler as capable of running the offense and seeing the floor like Cannon. Cody John is not on the same level.

But, this does tell us all one thing. Someone else is coming in. My money is on a transfer big. Randy is retaining Jordan Dallas only for insurance. Is that ethical? No... When Randy talks about character and all, lets all remember that it is expected for the players but not the coaches. Dallas could leave this season and go to a JC, which would give him the best shot at getting another DI gig. We all know that he isn't going to play much in the future. He will be the 4th or 5th big this year and next year probably the 6th. He might get some cleanup mins but that is about all.

I think we royally screwed the pooch with Cannon and it started last off-season. I think we protein powder and weight roomed him out of the rotation. He was a totaslly different player with the extra 25 pounds of muscle on his frame. Cannon was our feisty junk yard dog that stepped up against Xaiver when Senglin went down. He just didn't have the same speed and fire with the extra weight. Let's hope we don't make a similar mistake with Harding.
