Downing's gotta go!

Yet another loss. Downing has proved he can't win so there is no need to extend his contract. It looks like Joe Glenn might get fired after this season too so maybe we could get him back here.

What about Gary Barnett? Hes had issues, but considering the shape we are in hes worth the risk, and he'd take the job if he still wants to coach.

If it was up to me, Dennis Darnell would be the interim coach as of Monday. Downing made the single dumbest coaching decision I've ever seen.

Gobears2010, What decision are you referring to?

It's clear that we now have the talent to compete, we just don't have the coaches. Dam!!! this might be worse than getting blown out like last year because then at least I could shut the games off early and go do something else productive.

Two weeks in a row at home coach downing calls very dumb calls. First you don't do a Q-B sneak when there is 30 sec to play. Second you go for the tie, were not the broncos don't go for two when are offense has sucked all game. If you unc is going to be anything then they need to get smart and find a coach that has experience with offense and defense not a coach that coached special teams!

Hmmmmm, trying to not just go on a rant here but...

What is the mindset in running a gimmick play twice in the same game? Not only a gimmick play but a gimmick play that comes out of a gimmick formation, so it's not like it's disguised at all, everyone in the stadium knew what was coming. That has to be the single worst call I've seen in years... Mind boggling really the stupidity of that call.

I would have kicked it.

But even saying that if you want to go for 2 OK but get your regular offense out there and run a real proper play.

Gimmick plays are for a shot in the dark, oh why not type thing when you have nothing to lose. NOT WHEN THE FUCKING GAME IS ON THE LINE YOU MORON!

And then his interview on the radio, Oh shucks, I would have been a genius if it worked...

UH NO, YOU'RE NEVER GOING TO BE CALLED A GENIUS EVER!

And all the mistakes... I put that on coaching... can we emphasize ball security? It is possible to not have 6 turnovers a game? Really, I can't believe our guys just have slippery fingers while the other teams don't, it's ridiculous.

I really think we have decent talent to compete, we've proven that but you can't overcome the mindboggling mistakes. Seriously if you do half that shit on the High School JV team it wouldn't be acceptable.

I think I'm done for this season. I'll follow the team always, watch the games online, listen on the radio but I'm sick of sitting through these games to have them blow like this time after time... it's time I got a life.

I agree with most of what you say, that trick play at the end was outright moronic. Downing can recruit, that's for sure, but we took a recruiting coordinator and tried to make him a head coach. That's like going to a farmer, and saying "Hey, you grow good food, will you be the chef at my 5-star restaurant?"

But I don't think I'm done for this season just yet.

Wow. That is without a doubt the dumbest call I've ever seen. Contrary to what Downing said, even if it would have worked it would still be a dumb call. You don't use the same call twice in the same season let alone the same game. Like I said, bad teams and coaches find ways to lose games. At 2-25 or whatever ridiculous number it is now, I've seen enough.

I think this team will be 0-9 headed into Sac State and Portland state. Best case is 2-7 (with a chance to beat UC Davis and Idaho State). Even if we beat Sac State (I think doubtful) and PSU (I think doable) we are looking at somewhere b/w 1 and 4 wins this year. That is not enough for me to say lets do it again. I have no idea how many wins Hinrichs thinks Downing needs but he should have two of them already. You can't dream up dumber ways to lose games than what the Bears have done the past two weeks.

I agree that Downings call was one of the dumbest calls I've seen in a football game in a while. However, it's a team lose. We had freaking -25 yards rushing. NAU is a very good rushing defense, but -25 yards is just pathetic. You can call Waggener's game pathetic too. He was just off almost all day.

I am not as confident with this team as I was after the Purdue game, but we all must admit we have improved from the past two years. NAU dominated last year, but this year we could have won. I say we beat ISU and PSU and that's about it. I doubt Scott will be back.

I will agree that the talent has improved on this team, especially at QB (even though it wouldn't take much to top the QB play from last year). It isn't so much that we tried to make a recruiting coordinator/special teams coach into a head coach, its the fact that Jay simply picked the wrong guy for this job, and the unfortunate thing is this football program will be paying for this mistake for years to come.

The QB sneak against Texas State wasn't called from the sideline. The coaches wanted a spike to stop the clock, and the signal was misinterpreted.

I'll leave you to your rantings, now, while I throw things at the TV for the Broncos lousy performance in KC.

They are much better but that isn't saying much, seriously. THey will go 0-11 guaranteed when they make as many mistakes as they do week after week.

And I have to take issue with one thing, we are pinned at like our 10 yard line and we have a false start but while we're trying to snap the ball the fricking band is playing, I mean come on. Why is the band playing when we're at the line of scrimmage?

But anyway, my assesment of Downing as a football coach is I think he'd make a great insurance salesmen. I think he's a nice guy but it doesn't translate to the field. He has brought in better talent but you still lose when you have so many mistakes. I'm just not accepting that we are simply unluckly, there's something more to the fact we have 3 or 4 times as many turnovers and mistakes as our opponents.

The playcall there was just so piss poor, what a killer... It's a shame when the coaches cost the team the chance to make it or break it.

So, just looking at the scores I thought that the team was making strides from last year, and I think we have. But after listening to what happend, it seems like we should have won both of the last 2.

I think my biggest concern now is who Jay will hire the next go round...

I agree with a lot of what's said here but want to see the whole season play out before I make a final call on what I think should happen.

HOWEVER, I totally agree with a point above that penalities and mental mistakes are a huge red flag regarding poor coaching. A well coached team might not have the talent but mentally will not make the blunders we see. But then they questions comes, is fumbling and turnovers a mental thing or a physical thing, a mixture of both and by how much? If it's a mental thing that's on the coaches, if it's a physical thing then we just don't seem to have the talent to hold onto the ball... Or we're not emphasizing ball security at all. The amount of times we fumble is way beyond even what a high school team would expect. We'll never win when we put the ball on the ground 5 or 6 times a game...

Bobby Hauck (Montana) is/was a special teams coach and recruiting co-ordinator.....that was the extent of his resume'. He didn't even play football. His record speaks for itself.

.....just sayin'

How far will a coaching staff go to keep their jobs? Keep POS players criminal records out of the press? Maybe so. I have been a Downing advocate for quite a while, but I'm beginning to change my thoughts. You can't have a winning program if you talk out of both sides of your mouth. The players know this.
Recent events have soured my opinion on college football, specifically UNC. I root for many teams, especially underdogs but I think this program is at the drop dead point and it saddens me.
In my mind it is more important to have a winning team that appreciates an education and playing good football than just a winning team. I'm bummed. Character is not a factor at UNC anymore.

What is this about players' criminal records being kept out of the press?? I know we've had several well-publicized run-ins with the law with Downing in '06 and '07, but I've not hears anything about criminal records being kept from the press.

I think Downing is gone after this year, if not I don't know what the hell UNC is thinking. I've tried to support them the best I can threw the last few years, and even give Downing the benefit of the doubt. I absolutely hate the offense Downing's staff brought in, all this sideline to sideline crap, he doesn't have the athletes to run it. When you're running draw plays for no yard when you're down big, what's up with that? I'm tired of hearing the excuses for UNC, they don't have good funding, etc.etc. Seems like there's hardly any tradition at UNC games anymore.

Tradition? I asked this board recently if anyone could answer one simple question:

How many coaches at UNC have winning records?

That answer alone will tell you what UNC's tradition in football has truly been. Men's basketball is the same. Those around the programs currently are actually trying to establish some tradition towards the right direction.

I don't know but I was looking at the old new archives 1998-1999 on the bears websites, that looks like some good tradition right there, now its gone to nothing.
