Downing's gotta go!

Interesting that you guys say that Barnett is used to working at a school that allows him whatever he needs.......He had to work around Northwestern's high academic standards, and had to deal with that at CU to a lesser extent. HUGE difference between bringing him in vs. Jerry Glanville.........The Portland State job was Glanville's first head coaching job at any college level, and he had not been in college football before June Jones offered him a job at Hawaii in 2005 since a five year tenure as DC at Georgia Tech in the late 60s and early 70s, in addition to being out of coaching period for 15 years.

Heres the point I want to make with Barnett: Regardless of his baggage, his coming here would generate a tremendous amount of interest in this program, which we have not seen in the Scott Downing era.

Just so you all know, no member of his staff at CU was ever found to have done anything wrong outside of Barnett's comments about Katie Hnida.

Anyhow, I've met him personally, and its good to see that this is generating conversation, as he is a great man who deserves another chance to coach.

There have been three coaches with winning records, and Dalton's wouldn't be that way if he was still coaching here.

I'm looking for an IMHO somewhere in there.

UNC's has the tradition of being competitive. We may not always come out, year after year, on the right side of the win/loss column, but we have always given a pretty good game. Rarely, over the years, have I gone to a UNC game thinking that we were going to lose. I have experienced both dismay, and happiness, at the outcome of a game. It has only been in the last few years that I sit and wonder, "What are we going to fuck up this week?" Downing has proven to be a failure on the football field. He is a good man, but unlike his predecessor, he doesn't know squat about running a football team. I've talked to people that say, "He needs four years to be competitive", but I'm thinking that the first three have been a precursor to what we are going to continue to see if we don't deep six him.
I say bring back the fine UNC tradition of hard hitting, blue collar, in the conference hunt, football. I still wear my UNC gear with pride, and I always will.

Sounds like Montana could have hung a hundred on us if they would have played their 1st team the whole game. Atta boy Scotty keep up the good work!

Hoel, without going back and checking, I think that most people on this thread would have no problem bringing in Barnett. I just don't think Barnett would want to come.
A) The cash is nowhere is his league.
B) I think he would look at it as a demotion.
C) He would clash with Hinrich's "I'm running this show" attitude. Most D1 AD's work with their coaches, Hinrich feels his coaches should work for him.
I remember the Katie Hneida incident, and I remember thinking that all he did was call a spade a spade, she wasn't very good.

I understand........I said I thought he would be worth a phone call at least......How he would get along with Hinrichs.......who knows......but somebody with the past that he has would probably be more open to coming here than we all think......If it were to happen, it would get the program positive attention, which would be good.

I'm not a huge Barnett fan and it's all a mute point anyway I'm expecting Downing to get a 2 year extension after the season.

But, regarding Barnett he sort of got screwed on the Hnida thing, no pun intended. He didn't want her around she was brought in as a publicity stunt by Skippy Neuheisal and Barnett was left holding the bag. Also, he was correct, she was terrible, like so obviously not qualified that it made her presense a joke. That's not PC but it's true.

Also, not to take this too far off topic but when Hnida is now making her career as a public speaker, has written a book, is making a living now off this alleged incident it raises a huge red flag to me about really what might or might not of happened... no charges were ever filed remember...

Anyway, one final point, this being about a lack of suport from the students, community, etc. At this point this lack of interest is a total benfit to Downing. I mean at what other school that has decent support would they stand for 3 years of 1 win seasons? Would that go over anyplace else in country really? Downing should be thanking his lucky stars there is no support, if there was he would have been run out of town on the high rail long ago...

Don't hold your breath for Barnett or Glenn. I don't think either would come here to coach. I do however think that Joe would go back to Montana if there was an opening, but I don't see him coming back here.

The only problem I had with Barnett was his complete lack of responsibility when it came to the rape charges against his players at a recruiting party. He continued to hold on to the idea that "I can't watch these guys 24/7", when the public was looking for him to say, " We will handle it." When new recruits come to town, you send them out with some one responsible, not some one that says," Hey...let's go get some hookers!" :)

I agree 100%. When you add in his comments about Hnida, it is not so much that he did anything 'wrong' but that he was just unaware about how pissed people were.

I would like to clarify my comments from earlier. I was not saying that I would be upset if Barnett were to come here and coach, as has been pointed out by others there would be some great positivies to come of it. However I beleive that there are some letigimate concerns about it, and with a decision as important as hiring a coach to turn a program around, you have to look at every angle.

Concerns are understandable.....but then again Neuheisel, Mike Price, Mike Dubose......all coaches with baggage.......all are coaching at some college level....I think at least bringing in Barnett should he be interested would get people talking about the program again, and probably generate much more interest among the students here, which would be a tremendous positive.

Good point GoBears. His Hnieda comments were like pouring gasoline on a fire. He just said the wrong thing at the wrong time.

If they get rid of Downing, I honestly don't care who they bring in, anybody else can do 1 win a season can't do no worse. It would be awesome if they brought in Barnett or Glenn, but I high doubt anything like that would happen. Downing has brought the reputation of this football program down down down, don't know who would want to come in and clean up this mess.

Please Fire Downing! The players hate him and the fans hate him there is no way we will ever win. And trust me I talk to a lot of the younger players at school and parties and they are not fans of Downing either.

Keep them losses comin' scotty boy!! I predicted a one win season and I would hate for you to prove me wrong. The players have obviously quit for the season

I don't think the defense has quit.

I agree the defense has not given up! The defense doesn't seem to get easily discouraged by one big play and they keep fighting until the end. However the offense is a joke B Wag had 4 interceptions no touchdowns. The play calling is ridiculous! Special teams is off target! The offense seems to get discouraged easily. I say try new players out like Kyle Orms at QB maybe Andy Muns at HB.

I think they have done well most of the time but there is no way that Montana should have been so dominant.

The issue I've got to bring up that's bothering me is the total lack of passion. Downing is just so milk toast it annoys me to no end. I think the player feed off that attitude and it's just falling flat week after week.

After watching us sleep walk through another loss I watched the CSU BYU game and talent wise CSU had no business in that game but darned if they didn't will themselves into it. You could just tell they were giving an effort above their talent level and yeah when it all came crashing down at the end you could see it was quite obvious that Fairchild absolutely HATED to lose, that it was killing him that they blew it, that he is so competitive that a moral victory meant nothing and you know he didn't sleep a wink that night.

I just don't get that from Downing, it's like ho hum, oh well, if we didn't throw a pick 6 we would have won, blah blah blah...

Downing, do you get pissed? Do you care? Come on dude, have an explosion, get an unsportsman like conduct penalty, get mad, say a bunch of things you'll regret later, go on a rant to the media, get pissed, show some passion please, show me that you hate losing because I just don't see that, I see you accept it way too easily and now the team seems to accept it way too easily.

GET PISSED OFF AND GET SOME FIRE OR GET THE HELL OUT OF HERE WE NEED A COACH WITH SOME PASSION AND SOME FIGHT!!!

Blofeld stated perfectly what I HATE about Downing. He always has an excuse and it could be a blowout loss but he'll say something along the lines of "I think we played pretty well but the other team was just better." It's as if he has already resigned himself to the fact that he will be selling used cars this time next year.
