EWU @ Montana State

For the scoreboard watchers:

Sac St 16
Mt 14 (w 1:46 til halftime)

O and the biggest surprise so far
USC 21
WSU 13 (w 1:55 till halftime)

obzerver: my phone app

So far after an MSU drive to our 3 yard that resulted in a FG and a offensive drive by us that started at our 40 yard line and went backwards, I'd say that MSU got the better of the halftime adjustment. COME ON EAGS!!!

Our offense looks worse than ever. Mitchell throws one right to the safety, a shovel pass in the dirt, and then panics on 3rd down. And as always, we've completely abndoned running the football.

When things go bad, we'rel ike a bad cliche. Unfortunately, we just don't have a QB who can make things happen this season. We ran the ball alright early, I don't know why we'bve chosen to give up.

Truth is, our D isn't THAT awful right now. Our offense gave up a pick 6 and they had the fake for a TD. Other than that, we should be winning this game... and even with that, we should still be in it.

All the talk on this game will be about Taiwan Jones vs the MSU defense, and rightfully so. Here are some things you Eagle fans may not be aware of though.

Conference rankings:

MSU is #1 in total offense (493.3 YPG)
MSU is #1 in rushing offense (219 YPG)
MSU is #1 in passing efficiency (169.1 rating)
MSU is #1 in first downs (27 per game)
MSU is #1 in red zone efficiency (a perfect 17 for 17)
MSU is #3 is passing offense (274.2 YPG)
MSU is #3 in scoring offense (43 PPG)

And, perhaps most importantly for this game, MSU is #1 in time of possession (34:49 average).

The stats are somewhat skewed playing a bad DII, a non-scholly FCS, and a bad FBS foe, but we still put up over 400 yards of total offense against the Cougs, and 123 on the ground.

EWU is bad against the run, and even worse against the pass. I think Eagles should be more worried about stopping the surprisingly potent and efficient MSU offense than the Cats should be about stopping the great Taiwan Jones.

No prediction from me yet, just food for though. :)

And yes, losing Taunau may hurt quite a bit, we have a 5th year senior and a 4th year junior starting for our two guys, and one of the best offensive line coaches in all of FCS football IMO. We should be okay. Denarious McGhee (QB) and Orenzo Davis (RB) can make plays just fine on their own anyway.

Sounds like you prefer your math, but I like history a little better:

Recent history is on the side of the Eagles in a series that has seen EWU come out on top in 25 of 33 meetings. Eastern has won the last seven meetings and 16 of the last 19. Since 1990, EWU's only losses to the Bobcats came in 1997 (17-7 in Bozeman), 2001 (48-38 in Spokane) and 2002 (25-14 in Bozeman).

Eastern has won the last three meetings in Bozeman, with MSU's last win coming by a 25-14 score in 2002. In fact, Eastern has not lost to Montana State in the last seven times they have met at Roos Field, dating back to a 28-25 double-overtime victory by the Bobcats in 1990.

And yes, MSU's stats are definitely inflated by the opponents you've played. Weak D-II, really weak FCS, and really really weak FBS. Likewise, our numbers are also a little skewed because we've gone up against perennial power D-II, perennial power FCS, and FBS' #1 or #2 Offense from last year (with almost all of it back). Keep in mind that Nevada also just beat Cal 52-31, and we only lost 49-24.

I'm not gonna make any predictions yet, just some food for thought. ;)
You LOSE!

I love how all the MSU defenders would pile on Jones after being tackled.

Seriously, I would love, by some miracle, to see MSU again in the play-offs.

Guess that streak had to end some time.

And how so? I didn't go over to bobcatnation and talk shit, I voiced my opinions and backed them up with stats and evidence. You sir are a classless douchebag.

I think the game started out a little choppy and was that way for awhile with both sides putting in hits, ie offensive lineman diving on back of Ogden's legs when he turned away.

I'll have to watch again but that first return didn't seem like the Cat players were hitting Taiwan but another Eagle player in that pile and that Taiwan maybe got caught in crossfire.. I'll have to watch that part again, but I was a little groggy after getting back from Bozeman.

Obviously the game changed when Taiwan tried to hurdle our CB and got " caught " in sensitive area on our CB's helmet and then crashed to the ground.

He was definitely getting his yards with the only difference was that our defensive lineman were for the most part able to get a hand on him on his way through and slowed him down just enough to not bust the 70 yard run.

I have seen so many games where breaks didn't go the Cats way and this time they finally did. The only surprise from your team was the lack of sacks from your team although you laid out McGhee quite a few times, but it wasn't like what you did to the Griz the week before. Two missed field goals and that one dropped pass where your WR dropped the sure td was the difference in the game.

I do think that this week (because you will forced to) will get your offensive rhythm figured out for a more consistent effort.

You guys needed to take advantage our your WR height.. and they can run.. wow.

We paid a heavy price for that win...good luck rest of season..

Listening to the podCat on Friday, former MSU player Ryan Elliot was saying that the EWU games he played in (2002-2005 I think?) were the dirtiest games they played all season, even worse than the Griz games. He said there was more hitting, stepping on guys when they were down, etc than any other game.

Note that he did not say which side started it, or which side was worse. He just said a lot of that kind of stuff went on. I took it as there is a lot of bad blood between the players on these two power BSC teams.

Anyways, good luck against Weber next week!
