Excitement Level for Basketball

reNo has got to be the worst thing to have happened to Weber State Basketball ever. By taking away the excitement of the conference season you've lost the drive for hundreds of fans to go to conference games. From what I heard it was pushed by most of the conference teams because they were sick of having to play in either Missoula or Ogden each year. It'll be funny when one of those "other" teams wins and then has to go to reNo and losses on a neutral court. To me, everyone has the same chance as everyone else each year. You play 18 conference games and who ever has the best record earns the right to host. If you can't win on your home floor, well, you were given every advantage earned during the conference season. Also, with UND leaving...you can't make the distance argument anymore. They are gone. Also, with UND leaving the conference should go back to playing a 20 game schedule. Everyone plays everyone at home and away. Whats the reason for a neutral tournament now?

North Dakota wasn’t the sole reason for going to a neutral site. The biggest drivers were costs and logistics. Coaches wanted every team to participate. In order to better accommodate that, the league wanted a pre-determined site so that all schools could make travel arrangements in advance and get the best prices. The predetermined site also allows parents of athletes to make plans in advance to attend. This really was a trade off for the athletes, coaches and families to have a better post season experience.

I know many Weber and Montana fans will not embrace that trade off. From a purely competitive standpoint I enjoyed having a limited field and home court advantage in play, because it gave meaning to a lot more regular season games for a lot of teams. And there’s always the possibility that the tournament format could go back that way — the only thing permanent about the Big Sky format is change. We’ll see how things go in Boise.

Coaches thought that not making the conference tournament was missing a benchmark that was leading to them getting fired. Guess what? New benchmarks have been established and coaches are still getting fired.

Boise you are right, and we agree. You want a competitive angle as well. Your above-mentioned statement is why I'm glad you post a lot. And, yes, I understand why these other variables tend to be somewhat compelling arguments for creating and having a pre-determined location. To me, however, it means that everyone must get a ribbon. But, is the Big Sky a DI NCAA College level conference or AYSO? What are we teaching these athletes and how does this format increase competition, participation, revenue generation, and most important fan attendance? If the only fans attending the event are parents and athletic department employees then why not just have it at a local LDS Stake Center in Boise and save a crap load of money? At least in the past, the conference could be assured of, at least, two well attended games. Now, not even one. Watching the crowd last year on TV was really embarrassing. In Boise, I predict attendance will be better and that it will end up being a better experience for the conference. Nevertheless, unless ISU or UI are playing in the final, it won't be highly attended like it was in the past. Even then, I have my doubts.

In past seasons, even teams who weren't in the mix could create fun games by playing spoiler to a team that was fighting for the right to host. Having only 8 teams participating each year made every game important for those teams at the bottom, and the right to host and get a bye, important for those at the top. In the past, there were times I would watch other Big Sky games in anticipation to seeing who would be going to the tournament and who would be winning the conference title. I remember suffering through a UM vs. SUU game hoping to see a SUU win so that Weber could win the conference title. Not now. The conferences move to this post season format really killed a lot of interest. It tells me that the conference season isn't important. All that matters is a week in March.

This interview is pertinent to this subject...

In this interview, Big Sky Conference assistant commissioner and director of championships Jon Kasper joins the Tootell & Nuanez show on 102.9 FM ESPN Missoula to talk about former Griz quarterback Dave Dickenson's induction into the College Football Hall of Fame and the final of three years in Reno for the Big Sky basketball tournament before the event moves to Boise next spring.

You only post when things are going bad so I guess your partially to blame for that. Heaven forbid you post anything when the team is on a 9 game winning streak

There's soooo much excitement for Weber State Basketball that there wasn't even a thread about last nights game. I'm so excited that this is the first time I have posted since, I think, December?
