FCS Playoffs Round of 16: SDSU @ EWU Game Thread

What is the coldest game played by the Eagles this season? Portland St? but that was still well above freezing? It will be interesting what impact those single digit/teens has on the play & players. Common sense says there's going to be dropped balls, fumbles and just a really tough day on offenses. Defenses should dominate this game. If so, I will be really surprised if SDSU doesn't get the W.

AGS, should be a great game. Definitely whoever wins game should be able to make the semi's.

Eastern players have not been sleeping the last two weeks. They have been practicing into the evening every night and it has been COLD. They will be acclimated. They will be ready.

Eastern is 17 - 1 over the last four years after November 1, including 6-1 in the playoffs. That's all you need to know about Eastern and cold-weather…

Here's another prediction simulator.

Eastern Wash.(2013) wins 93 of 100 matchups against South Dakota St.(2013)

Projected Score: Eastern Wash. 34 South Dakota St. 21 Margin of Victory: 13 Points

I think it'll be much closer than that, whoever wins.

Fun.

Eastern Wash.(2013) wins 94 of 100 matchups against South Dakota St.(2013)

Projected Score: Eastern Wash. 36 South Dakota St. 23

NDSU beats Furman 100 of 100 per site. ;-)

Nice stats. Rabidrabbit is just wishful thinking.

Here is a list of the Missouri Valley all-conference.

WR -- Jason Schneider, South Dakota State 6-5 220 Jr., concerns me. Portland State's tall receiver manhandled us.

Yes, and you can bet the SDSU staff noticed that in film.

What? They have film on EWU? Hope our coaches looked at film too. ;-)

Don't feed the complexes on this board clawman. The experience our D backfield got with all the injuries will pay big dividends in depth and on the field IQ. Just focused on sending POSITIVE waves. :D

I don't think we are underdogs and I'm definitely not saying that SDSU will win. What is the point in football discussion if you don't talk about the strengths and weaknesses of both teams?

What do you think Eastern will have to change on defense to prevent their tall receiver from making big plays? In other words, what should have happened differently defensively vs Portland?

My guess is, if the kid is legit, we'll have to press in cover 2 and jam him at the line. If he stays in the flat, the corner stays with him, if he turns downfield the safety will need to pick him up. But getting in his cage at the line of scrimmage and making him fight to get out on a route will be important.

Incidentally, it was TJ Lee that Portland State abused so bad. They went right at him and he had a lot of problems dealing with the big receiver. It got so bad they had to move Baines over. That's the first time I've seen TJ's height become a liability all season.

The MVC is tough, so him being a first team all conference receiver definitely points to the kid being legit. However, at 220 pounds, I don't think he will be as quick as Portland's tall receiver. This could make him easier to cover.

Consider me thoroughly chastised. :tiptoe:

Don't disagree at all with a discussion or a question being posed. Don't read minds if a comment is posed as a statement and not in the form of a question.

Dopa had a reasonable suggestion to the big receiver quandry and have seen other ideas on how to cover "kaufmanesque" receivers -- hell, I had one about Henderson in the Montana game about over under coverage in the red zone as well.

In the case of SDSU, they leverage the play action for most of their passing attack, so cover corners and safeties are going to have to be very disciplined and stay on receivers and/or in zones. I like press coverage to throw off routes and bring extra pressure (via LB or Safeties) on QB to cause chaos; not sure EWU is built to do that a full game. In that case, recognizing passing downs double covering the WR might be the next best situation or Dopa's suggestion of over/under zone, probably a form of all three at different areas of the field will be in order to be successful. Team discipline with the rest of the defense is necessary in any event. All this is easier if we take an early lead. After watching two SDSU games on ESPN3, they lack vertical speed at WR as you suggest.

The one change you really see from last year to this year on defense is that Eastern has abandoned the full-scale pass rush from the DE positions in favor of playing containment on the line. IMO, this has really helped, as we kept getting gashed last year by teams cutting inside our ends and running free into the secondary. This isn't a team built on applying pressure, so when someone gets a chance to put a shot on the QB, they need to take it and make it.

We'll be counting on a big performance from the DTs in this game, so Pulu, Katoa, Zylstra, et al will really need to turn that middle of the line into a wasteland of corpses. If can jam up the middle, I like our chances. If we can't, we'll be struggling.

Amended: Couldn't sleep last night and watched some of the S. Ill. vs. SDSU (S. Ill won, very messy field) and they stacked the line of scrimmage and brought the corners and safeties on outside blitzes early and kept the LB's off the line of scrimmage to react to run without O line interference. QB has good arm, not accurate on move in this one. These are fun to watch the SDSU broadcasters aren't over the top homer.

SDSU lost to S. Illinios and Missouri St. Beat Youngstown St. All 4 were 5-3 in conference. S. Illinios had the next best overall record at 7-5 to SDSU 8-4. SDSU only beat YSU out of all the second place teams. Missouri St beat S. Ill and SDSU head to head and didn't face YSU, ended with a 5-7 record.

Some would say that they beat up on each other, but SDSU wasn't even the second best team in this conference in games that mattered, at least by record and head to head.

Posted on Prediction thread: SDSU is 50th in rushing on 500 carries, EWU is 53rd on 400 carries. Wish we weren't so one dimensional :-)
