FCS Playoffs Round of 16: SDSU @ EWU Game Thread

Unless we have 4 turnovers like against PSU, I expect this to be a 17 point win where we pull away in the second half.

i wouldnt be surprised to see us down in the first half and then have to make some adjustments. we are such a second half team this year. would be great to see our run of third qtr domination continue.

I expect it to be score for score in the first half. I don' t think SDSU has the defense to stop Eastern. However, I expect it to take some time for our defense to slow down SDSU.

Does SDSU have the D to stop EWU's offense? This is the question of the game. I would be surprised if the EWU D will win vs Jacks offense. The one defensive team that EWU played is the one game that EWU lost. Jacks track record against offensive strength teams is good. Missouri St. may be the only game where an offensive minded team beat the Jacks (other than a PO'ed Nebraska team). The lower the score, the more SDSU will be in the game. Jacks in a tight win.
Hey Rabbit, welcome to our board. I hope I can get on yours before the game.
When you mention the defensive team we lost to are you thinking Toledo or SHSU? Those are our only losses and I don't really consider them as defensive minded.

This will be SDSU's fourth road game in a row, hard to see them pulling this one out but I expect a good game.

This should be a 20 point win. We will go up early, SDSU will struggle to keep up and the game will be out of hand by the 4th quarter.

SDSU is going to try to try to run all day, but we don't struggle with the type of offense they run. We struggle when a team runs the spread option with a mobile QB, SDSU does not play that way. No way they will contain our offense. If they want to drop 6 or 7 in coverage, we will run on them all day long, if they bring pressure, we will go deep all day long.

I'm sure we will try to get up early and make SDSU play catch up, which they are not built to do.

Weather looks cold but dry on Saturday, can't wait for the game...

Just giving a little input. I believe this will be a very good game first and foremost. Yes it is our fifth road game in a row, but at the same time the JACKS have played better and better each of the games. I am however glad that you are taking our passing game lightly. We have the MVFC leader in passing yards. You cant compare it to EWU becasue we play a different style of football. We will handle teams upfront and that is a change from what you typically see in your conference. You should take a look at the game vs Nebraska that we had in the first quarter. We spread it out and did very well agains Nebraska. They for some reason we changed our entire gameplan and it went downhill from there. I think you will also be suprised at the mobility of our quarterback.

In order for SDSU to have a chance your QB is going to have to play well because I'm pretty sure we are going to make your QB beat us and not ZZ.

One thing it appears most SDSU's fans are looking past is the fact they have not faced an offense, QB, or WR's like EWU's. Nothing in the Missouri Valley compares to the what SDSU will see on Saturday. We have athletes all over and we get them the ball...

Seen a couple of SDSU games and if our DC is surprised by your QB's mobility, then we will need a new DC. I like your QB but he just doesn't have the go to weapons to keep SDSU in the game against EWU's offense in the shootout this will become IMO. If you need to think EWU will be "handled" up front on either line to sleep better, go ahead. ;) Bring on the Jackrabbits.

I'm not that optimistic our passing game will be able to operate well Saturday. With temps in the teens or single digits at game time, the ball will be hard to throw and catch. I ran into BLM at the PSU game and asked him about the effect of cold weather on play. He said once you're on the field, it doesn't matter. For now, I'll pray for sun and 70 degrees.

Dont need to sleep better at night as I am not a player just a fan giving my 2 cents.

Me too. Here was my thoughts posted on another thread.

Observations from YSU and NAU games:

SDSU runs strong side 60+% with the draw as a good change up on 2nd and long downs (they pass out of this formation too). O Line has wider than normal splits (I like this technique for creating space for the run), this isn't Stanford's O line and EWU D line should match up well. WR's block well but lack vertical speed. QB for SDSU runs well situationally and can make the first defender miss. Additionally, SDSU likes to go wide side of the field as Zenner kicks it outside very well. On D, SDSU is playing some younger players up front and they are a bit undersized per roster data. Play quick, not necessarily fast on D Line or LB's. Teams can't run typical cross type stunts up front on D line against SDSU, slanting the line is effective if LB's stay at home to stop cut backs, especially backside edge. SDSU O line is mobile, didn't see a lot of pulling, but they reach block well and contain edge defenders.

On D: stack up the middle, maintain edge with DE's, keep LB's off line of scrimmage, important first guy makes tackle or holds on. If D Line pushes upfield on run plays and leaves gap, RB will take it upfield immediately. Bring safety into box/edge on running downs and go man coverage 80%. Bring TJ or Baines on corner blitz. EWU's deep D line will be an asset. Essentially, gameplan as if this is an option rushing attack like EWU did against Cal Poly for the first three quarters to minimize SDSU big plays on ground and make QB beat you with arm. Third downs can bring the D line pressure with spy on QB. SDSU will make some plays but making them chip away at it will create some opportunities for turnovers.

On O: EWU will be able to run behind big O line against undersized D Line and LB's. Fly sweeps to attack edge and create misdirection with play action to open up big plays down field and slow down rush. YSU ran effective reverses on overpursuing SDSU D, EWU has faster players in Hill, Bomber et al. Wheel RB's out of backfield will be effective against LB's if SDSU in man, if not man, than bombs away against zone coverages and quick runs.

EWU wins by grinding early on D and being patient for the big play on O.

I ran a few simulations, and they all had us losing this game by one or two points. :(

First of all, for the low information crowd - what simulation program? Put link if online. What makes this simulation valid IYO? How many simulations? Average score? This post is like saying you flipped a coin 100 times and SDSU won 54 of them --- Oh No!

:ohno:

Hyperbole to follow.

If it's the "versus" simulator it's based primarily on Sagarin. When I run that one on iphone that's what result it gives me as well. Sagarin is obviously just a guide, and is based heavily on strength of schedule which would obviously help out SDSU's Sagarin rating. Our rating went down about 20 spots from the week before the PSU game, presumably because of the narrow win against PSU. Meh, computers. :coffee:

This. Sagarin had the BSC (at least at one time) rated below the OVC and Ivy. :dunce:

Exactly. Never trust the Sagarin ratings. It has us 55 spots below Oregon State... :coffee:

Edit: Villanova is also rated above us

If you don't think this will not be a nail bitin', bed wettin, heart stopping pecking each others eyes out game (for at least the first 3.5 quarters), you will be in for something!

Don't forget you Nitroglycerin

What is the coldest game played by the Eagles this season? Portland St? but that was still well above freezing? It will be interesting what impact those single digit/teens has on the play & players. Common sense says there's going to be dropped balls, fumbles and just a really tough day on offenses. Defenses should dominate this game. If so, I will be really surprised if SDSU doesn't get the W.

AGS, should be a great game. Definitely whoever wins game should be able to make the semi's.

I've played in a few games where it was this cold before and, quite honestly, it's not that big of a deal. The only guys who get cold are the ones who aren't playing and the people watching. Weather won't be a factor for either side. Plus, people sometimes forget that we have a stable of running backs and good o-line and if we have to run it, we can and will. I will say that SDSU makes me nervous because they're a good team and my feelings would be the same if it was going to be 65 and sunny. Too much is being made of the weather thing.

I don't think the cold will be an advantage to either team. Bear in mind we've played in this type of cold in the post-season many times before. And as recently as all the way through the semi's in 2010 and 2012. I wouldn't say that it effected the passing game that mutch, with the exception of the NDSU game where it was snowing heavily.

Here's another prediction simulator.

http://nationalsportsrankings.com/index.php?option=com_oneonone" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Eastern Wash.(2013) wins 93 of 100 matchups against South Dakota St.(2013)

Projected Score: Eastern Wash. 34 South Dakota St. 21 Margin of Victory: 13 Points

I think it'll be much closer than that, whoever wins.
